Has Anyone Converted A Plastic Model To R/C?

Yep Ghost I agree. I bought the Nichimo Yam when I was stationed in Hong Kong with the Queens own Highlanders back in the early 80's. Unfortunately it was destroyed by a relative with a bad temper in 83. The new one was my crimbo prezzy from the missus this last year.

Unfortunately Rich well adjusted is not a term the other members of my paintball team would use to describe me. Although being in my 50's I am the eldest.

Well I finally got the S-100 finished and out on the water. Thanks to Bobslr and his pics I just had to build one. Took it out on the local ( 25 miles away) lake this last weekend. Water was a little choppy so I didn't get chance to run it up to speed.

I used an losi motor ( same one they use for their 1/35 cars) and ESC, the little blue packet is the voltage reg for the Lipo battery. Around the inside of the hull is a bulkhead about 1/2" from the hull, that I filled with that spray insulation foam in a can to help stop any possibility of sinking.

We convert just about any plastic model into RC in Hong Kong. I have a Revell MTB, PT-109, S-100, Fishing boat and Flower. More senior fleet comander even convert a Airfix RAF ( 9" ) Rescue.

Thanks bobslr, it was yours that gave me the idea.
frogprince, I used to live in Hong Kong. In fact I bought my first Yamato there, in a little shop on Waterloo road, Kowloon, just before it crosses Nathan road. Just watched the youtube link. Man that thing is fast? I have 2 more 1/72 E-boats ( 1 Revell and 1 Airfix) and the Airfix Vosper MTB. I built the 1/72 Revell PT-109 (but will be building another) a bunch of years ago and even managed to squeeze 3 motors inside it. Don't you just love the challenge? I was dared to try to get smaller by my friends in Colorado Springs about 10 years ago so came back with the Revell 1/125th ( I think) U-505 fully submersible. That one was hard.

Scarecrow. It is a very small world. The shop you mention still here. Yes, the rude fat lady also still there.[X(]
The greatest archevement we see so far is a scratch build 1/350 flower class with mini-Z control board. That same guy also built a 13" CSS Virginia with fully functional cannon shooting white baby powder.
I also attempted unsucessfully to convert a Acadamy U-IX boat.
But I know some Japanses able to stuff the U-VII (1/150) with 2 servo, a Gyro, ESC and the rest and 4AA size Ni-MH[X(]

I bought a Lindberg Blue Devil from whistle stop, and bought a two channel futba setup. They found out they was all out of the special item, and switched me up to the four channel, with mini servo's for $40.00 out the door from prop shop hobbies.
I also bought two 280 motors, and ran them straight, with large heat sinks, and upgraded props. I then enlarged my twin rudders, and have reverse turn on the props, to help steer the brute.

Frogprince, I have to admit that my time in Hong Kong was my favorite. I loved the place, Repulse bay, Clearwater bay, Stanley, Shatin, it was all great. Thats what you would call really shoe horning everything into that U-Boat. Right now I am finishing off my 1/72 Flower class, Had to put nearly 10 lbs of weight in the hull just to get it to sit on the waterline. Damb that thing is bouyant.
You got a really good deal there werdon, ever check out the lindyfletcher group on yahoo? They are dedicated to the lindberg blue devil Fletcher.

10lb in a 1/72 Flower? Methinks some new scales are needed. Waterline happens on mine at 6 1/2 lb total weight. Most of it is a 6V 4AH SLA, with about 8oz for trimming.

I've gained many a scrape and scar courtesy of the "Social Mixer" way back then as well. You did remember to take your brother in law away afterwards? There are plenty of lost souls wandering around here without adding to them.

My 1/72 flower sank near Sai Kung Pier
. I am scratch buliding a 1/16 38' picket boat at the moment.

This site may be of some interest for plastic R/C conversion aficionados: http://puremtc.com/ga_videos/rc_ships_subs/index.htm
True, the propulsion/maneuver systems are already realised and it may take the DIY factor out of the equation but these are some really nice systems judging by the videos.

Has anyone converted the Academy 1:400 RMS Titanic or the Minicraft 1:350 Titanic? I thought that would be a cool build. Would take some fine work to get the props running and the rudder to work, but
I think its doable.

Cadmonkey, Check from the beginning of this thread and you will find lots of tips about converting your Titannic. I believe you will find a couple of lads who have converted the ship and have it feet wet.

I've read the thread a few times. I was wondering specific to this model because she could be a little top heavy, due to the stacks. I think I'm going to go for it, worst case i end up with another titanic Display model.
Cheers,

It will not be tha stacks that give you grief, it will be the decks. A lot of that thick heavy plastic needs removing, preferably without removing the structural integrity or spoiling the appearance.

Yes, Scarecrow, they finished it off about the same time we had the show at the Norcalympia overlooking the wreck site. We were hoping to enter it into a competition as "biggest in show, diorama", but all there was at show time was a few diggers tidying up. Every last bit has been recovered, total clean up.
