Default MCD SC 480 ESC

Wanting to run 3 Graupner 12v 700s on 14.4 or 16.8v, in parallel, does anyone have any experince with this esc, thanks, Randy (MCD 480 ESC)
By the way I have, and am running 2 graupner 700s on 12v with one proboat esc. I have had about 5 good runs, sometimes holding the throttle at full for about 30 seconds and the esc only gets a little warm.
The 700s are rated at 12.5 amps at max. eff, and at 43amps stalled.

Hi Rye,

The motor has a Kv of about 680 RPM/V and will run around 16000 RPM at 24V.

After some crude calculations, a speed of 10 knots can be obtained with two 2 bladed 50mm props with a pitch ratio of around 1 (low pitch ratio). Recommended batteries would be sub C type as used in RC cars. A standard pack contains 6 cells. Using 3 in series for each motor (six 6-cell packs total) would be most economical. ESCs which will handle these high cell count will be added to our program within a month.

Regards,

this is what they send to me ,still no esc they dont have on yet, rye

Well, I recieved mine today, looks pretty good, I have a stupid questian. Is this a good way to cool. Run the intake tube from just behind the prop and run it threw one of the cooling tubes and make a U turn with the tube and then run back threw the second tube on the other side. Thanks Randy.

I have hooked up the sc-480 to 3 Grapner 700s, have not ran it in the water yet, I am going to put it in later, will see how hot it gets, with no water cooling and will keep you posted. The esc has 2 settings, set on one of them it wines, I am told that some of the powerful
escs like this one will wine, so I set it on the second setting, no wine, but when I am not on an exact netural setting the motor knocks a little, I think it is getting partical signals, just enough to make the motor kick and then turn back to whear it started, if I put it in exact netural this stops.
Has anyone experinced this problem before, and does it harm anything. Thanks, Randy.

Hi Randy,

I assume the tube you mention is soldered onto the fluxring of the motor?
If so, the cooling will be minimal, but, if your motor doesn't get too hot, it will do.

We run thid type of cooling on our 600 motors, which run for 7 minutes flat out on a seven cell pack sub-C.

Regards, Jan.

I ran it this morning in the water with out water cooling and the ESC only warmed up a little. One of the 6 cell battery packs heated up very hot while the other only got a little warm, I ran two 6 cell 4200ma packs in series, both were not charged fully when I ran it, and one may have had 0.3 to 0.4 volts more than the other in it and now the hot one does not want to charge all the way.

I am concerned about the esc getting hot, my friend runs 21.6 volts to his 2 700s and the motors are ok I have 3 700s, I just tested it set on slow impluse, not supposed to be as effecent but does not whine, I will try it tomarow set on high impluse and if it heats everything up I will go to 10 cells, If I knew about this problem in advance I would have gone with 2 pro boat $40 ESC, 1 for 1 motor and 1 for 2 motors hooked into one control with 2 Y harnesses with 12 volts. I allready run2 700s with 1 proboat on 12 volts on a trojan. I have been running the PT ON 14.4 VOLTS.

Just got back from the lake 20 minutes ago with the esc set on high, it cut off on me and after it cooled off it runs again so what I will do is run it on low impluse and with 10 cells. Mabey someone will pick up something from this.

hi randy
your running to hot us the cooling tubes that run thought the esc and only 28 amps of power i stay below that ,and set it up on progam as the insturtion say to do ,make sure all your setting are in the neutral before you start you dont want to blow it up look at how long it took to get ,if you want to call him about the set up he will talk you thought it ps i am building a 1/16 scale ww-11 langing craft for my rc tanks it will be 48" long by 15 wide and this time i will be calling him to order one more if he has it in him hand to ship but call him he very slow but knows his stuff as for the battery that one thats get hot is no good a bad cell or two i run two esc on 900 motors and two 12 volt gelcells and both are water cooled the esc's are warm and the motors are hot but not hot enough to keep your hand on for about 30-40 minutes most of the time full tirgger

I am running 3 grapner 700s with 12.5 max eff. each. Total 37.5 at max eff. Of coursc it goes above that a little. The $40 pro boat (rated at 40 or 45 amps continous) ran 2, 700s on 12 volts and I had no problem and I ran it hard. It hardley got hot. Or the motors.
Would programming it make a difference.
It has a program enable switch.
a reverse switch
a slow priority switch
a high and low switch for the whine problem
Other than that I think it all works ok except the relitive numbers that proboat gives of 40amp continus and the 80 amp continous that sc-480 gives are not correct unless the water cooling makes the difference, I am weird about putting holes in my hull, so I am putting a fan in it, wal-mart $2.49 runs for about one hour on two aa. At the lake today someone took a video and will try to put it on the web, will keep you posted, did not cut of today on the no whine mode but the motors might have been hotter. Will look at the instructions and keep you posted.
