M 48 R C Conversion

Jim, She's coming along. Got a lot done today...finished the cupola, built the Israeli external mount for the 50 and extended the length of the gun. Now, since all hatches are open, I have to locate three 21 Century tankers to crew it. The crew in it is borrowed from my M-51s. Still lots of touchup and improvements to make before it's finished but it's making progress. .

All,
I have the presurgery pics, but I can't seem to uplaode them, it just sits and says uploading, well after 30 mins, I got tired of it uploading. Never had that problem in the past. To those who control the site, please stop monkeying around.

Finally got some pics together of what i was talking about with the PZ3 suspension
where the raised sections are you could cut these parts out in one and add them to some brass tube and run through the hull of the M48?

you may not even need to use the damper set up on first and last roadwheel by adding the strengthened springs for the metal upgrades

AFV432,
Thanks for the pics and that is a good idea, but the M48 hull curves inward and there is no way to drill the swingarm stops ( the little curved slot in the side of the PZ III hull that the little stud on the inside swing arm fits into ). I would still need to use the shock abosrbers to limit the swing arm travel. I guess I'll have to compromise and cut out the snubbers and replace them with the shock absorbers. The compromise will be the fact the shocks are about twice as long as the snubbers. It'll still work, just not 100% accurate but I'll have a working suspension. Thanks for the idea. I'm still rolling ideas around on how I could shorten the shocks and still have them durable.

how about fabricating shockers from brass tube?
i know the K&S range have sizes that will sit inside one another like a telescopic aerial?

Well ALL,
I'm still in the research phase, but getting closer to surgery. I discovered the Pershing swing arms are a bit short and I'm thinking of using the models swing arms once cut off ( I pm'ed phil on if he thought the plastic was durable enough ) I plan on back filling the models swing arms and using some brass rod to mount the shock to. Any thoughts???? When I do start, I will start another thread as this one has already become a bit long.
Thanks to all for your ideas and I ask for more if you have thoughts on my project.

PTC is it posible to take an HL or Tamiya M-26 and convert it to an M-46 or M-47. I really like the long bustle of the 47. one of my favorite tanks. Of course i love my m-26's and the 46 is very cool too. i know there is a lot of scratch building but i also know it can be done. Would be nice if Tamiya or HL would make somme retro fit kits for these models.

Hi Guys an Gals,
Bet you thought I forgot. Well here are some decostruction pics of the 21st Centurt M-48 that I plan on RCing with working suspension.
1st. There is only five screws holding the top to the bottom. Came off pretty easy.
2nd. The wheels are glued together, but seem to part with a little pressure. ( don't get me wrong, once the glue releases, it's still a bit to pull the halves apart. This is a well made model )
3rd. Once the wheeels are seperated. It's easy to pull the pressure pins out.
4th. I discovered that the swingarms have a sleeve that fits into the axel shaft ( loss for words to discibe better ) and 3 out of four seperated nicely. The one that didn't came apart flush ( see pics )
5th. I also discovered that the Pershing shock absorbers will fit almost like the snubbers so long as I attache them to the roadwheel axel. I'm thinking of using a long srew that the shocks can attach to. The wheel will hide most of the spring and the shock absorber will only mount a bit higher then the original snubber ( eye balling, as I haven't done it yet ).
Anyway. Didn't want you all to think I had given up on the project. Just takes me a while to figure everything in my head ( it's already crammed with useless knowledge as it is ) LOL.
Any usefull advice will be greatly appeaciated as I'm kinda just doing this on the fly ( no real plans etc...).
I also want to ask for suggestions on stregthening the swing arms. The swing arms a bit longer then the HL swing arms ( so I need to use the ones from the model ). I was thinking of reenforcing the back side with styrene strips. Any thoughts ??
Hope you like what I have so far posted.
Thanks
Jim

looking good so far
for the swing arms i would add some metal to the rear where the slot is
the mounting holes id drill out and shim out with brass tube all the way through the tub (nice and secure
)
the sprockets look identical to the pershing so they wont be a hard one
just some thoughts

I like the idea of using metal on the inside of the swing arms. Any ideas on how best to do this?
Thanks for the ideas.
Jim
