ok gents,
ive got a vintage tamiya king tiger. Im a jet guy and Im using my JR11x and a 921x ( flight ) rx in the tank, to get all the channels i need. I wanted to change the mechanical SC to an ESC to smooth the drive train. The traxxas esc I have doesnt seem to be compatible with my radio, it works fine in my ground 2ch radio.
so what esc can i use or what radio would be better for the application?
this is prob a stupid question, but I havent fooled with tanks much and havent raced cars in years.
thanks in advance for some know how.

well to be honest I could sell you a TK20 board and you could drop all that. I do believe the JR11 is a ppm modulation so you could even use your existing radio and reciever. The TK20 will run both motors, give you all the sounds you want and actions needed for the turret/gun etc.
I am thinking you don't want to re-invent the wheel when really your only 66 bucks and shipping away from running your tank.
The best radio for your application would be the Turnigy 9X or barring that a Spectrum DX6 will work wonders along with some orange recievers. Of course that is with the Clark board but you can listen to others as we all have our own opinions. This is my Clark TK22 which has moimentum and servo elevation, two things that are nice to have but nowhere near mandatory

The TK20 is available here www.shop.immortalhobbies.com

Hi
If it is an old Tam King Tiger (vintage) it will be more likely the single motor clutch driven type. If so the Clark or any other board designed for twin motor control will not be great for the ESC portion. In my vintage clutch driven tanks I have used a Tamiya ESC designed for their RC trucks - I also swapped the motor out for a 55 turn truck puller motor to give more torque and take the speed down to a more realistic level but this is not essential. The Tamiya ESC has been compatible with my Futaba 9C (2.4Ghz) which I have also used for flying in the past so may be OK with your JR gear but you would need to try it out. There are plenty cheap 2.4Ghz setups though that are mentioned in other recent threads if you do a quick search and these offer an inexpensive option if you find the JR was an issue.
The other option with the single ESC as above is fitting sounds at a later time can be done easily with a Benedini card. I have done this in my King Tiger and old Leo 1A4 and the sounds are superb.
The above is not the only way to go but works for me.
cheers

gorehound, you are correct. I have the old king tiger. single motor, dual clutch. my 11x is 2.4 dsmx
i was running the esc though my elevator channel as that stick has spring loaded neutral. I did get it to progam but it doesnt hold it when i reboot the radio. which port are you running your tam esc?
wonder if simply trying another esc would do the trick? or grabbing that tk20 which im not familiar with. Im not looking to do battles ect.. this is simply a mint shelf queen, I'd like to have in complete running order with an esc.

Have you tried using the Throttle channel on your radio? I know the stick for this in most radio's does not have a spring, but if you trim it correctly it should work fine.

Hi
I run the ESC through the throttle channel. As I do not fly heli's any more I just fitted a spring centre on it but it shoudl be fine without as long as you just go back to centre when you want to stop.
The TK20 is not really an option for the old single clutch type setup as it is designed to use twin motor setup. Also, it tends to be for the smaller 380 sized motors and not the bigger 540 that your one has. I use the TK20 in a couple of my other tanks and it is a good system but just not for what you are looking for.
I am surprised your set does not hold the programming on channels. I only use Futaba (not JR) and the transmitters hold whatever channel you program to what ever you program it for.
cheers

ive tried every channel. its not the radio, its the esc not holding its set program. im played with end points, different channels ect... nothing. it worked breifly but then quick responding properly and quit acknowledging input and would even program. i removed the esc, installed it into my buggy and its works fine on the spectrum 2ch. so, i know the esc is fine.
