Default M88a2 custom build saga

Well i finally have a tank collection. 2 1/2 heng longs. Im finally starting my M88 build with an m26 hull that i picked up cheap on ebay.

I will have alot of questions reguarding my build due to not much experience other then static versions i have done in the past in much smaller scale.

What does everone use for construction of the top portion? Being in the US i seem to hit alot of road blocks for suplies or have to wait a month or longer for one peice. Anyone have good leads on places to buy? I really do wish i lived in Germany still!

Pictures will soon follow os stripped hull and hopefully some peices that will arrive later in the week.

The one with the busted gun and idler arm?

Good luck on your build!

I have used Hobbylinc.com for all of my scratch building supplies for years. Their Building Supplies page has a lot of styrene materials and shapes that I use. They have good prices and delivery.

I also use molding and resin casting supplies from MicroMark.com I recommend both sources.

I think that's a different tank, Chase. Rob (rsd53) is the guy with the pershing with the broken main cannon.

Yes its not the same tank. I did look at that one but found just a bare bones hull that was unused.

Gary

There was another wrecked Pershing that I was bidding on last week. Needles to say, I didn't get it.

Gtrider6

I was just checking to see if you were the guy that out bid me lol. I figure it has a good chance of showing up here sooner or later. Lol

I see most use styrene. Im alittle set back and unsure since styrene isn't very strong. I don't want this thing to start caving in on itself when towing or lifting.

It depends on what you're doing with it. If you use panels that are thick enough with gussets and reinforcements in the right places it's a pretty good material to work with. Don't be afraid to reinforce it with steel where you have to. Are going to build the top totally from scratch or use the stock top as a base? Some drawings of what you have in mind will help guys advise, and mocking stuff up in cardstock or cardboard is always helpful. If you look at some of the builds Christian Ludwig has posted you can see he's using some pretty thick stock in places.

The top is from scratch. I scaled down the measurements to the hull that i purchased. I did buy some sheet aluminium in .060" and .090" from a local hobby shop.

I did see some of mr. Ludwigs builds, works of art if you ask me. Im hoping that my fabrication skills are up to par. It has been some time since i have made something from scratch. I really need to brush up on my German. Its been almost 5 years since i lived over there.

Hi gtrider
This is going to be an interesting build, getting the spacing right on the roadwheels will be even more interesting. Internal bracing using Aluminium Angle bolted together is probably the easiest way, and can be removed for access.

spacing for road wheels is the easy part!

Im trying to figure out what sort of radio gear to use. been digging around and have a few heli radio's still that offer enough channels to operate.

Going out on Saturday to hobby lobby to see if i can find some more styrene and more sheet aluminum. hobby shops are becoming more and more rare around me and the ones that are open don't really stock anything. Ive been in contact with a few due to driving an hour and the shop having such little stock that they don't have simple building or model supplies, but have a 1400 dollar T-rex heli.

I am also searching for either an M48 hull or an extra M26 hull.

I went to home depot this evening and picked up more bits for my dremel. I also picked up a mini lathe that i will be setting up at my girlfriends parents garage since they are close by. I attempted to make a few road wheels at work but the bits i have to work with there are designed for much larger pieces.

I also spent about 30 minutes working on my Tiger 1. Found out my tx01 board is junk so i made some of my own circuits up to get it running. Should be painting this weekend depending if i get my shipment in on Thursday or Friday.

Hi Take a look at photo the bridge is almost all plastic as is the upper of the tank . plastic is stronger than you think. the bridge will take a tank across it supported only at each end.

regards pete

p.s not my bridge just using a photo from the web to show how strong plastic is
the bridgelayer is built by a guy from Holland.

They've made it more difficult to get to the coupon. Not much, but I used to have an icon on my favorites bar that took me straight to the coupon ready to print. Now that favorites icon takes me to the home page but two clicks later and you can print this.

What used to be the coupon page is here

http://img.hobbylobby.com/sys-master...hopHL_Coup.jpg

and now it's the home page.

Of course, up here you can just show the cashier the coupon on your phone and they'll honor it.

Edit: What kind of GT?

GT I-drive 3.0 and a 4.0. I haven't been down a hill yet this year. Work, family and trying to buy a house is taking up all of my time.

Thanks for the coupon! Milliput can get pricey if you are buying alot.

M60 bridge layer? I have always wanted a wolverine bridge layer!

I wonder what he used for hydraulic's. I have come up with a few ideas for rasing the boom but things are getting tight already with one main winch and boom winch.
