Hey y'all it's Tim again.... will I finally got my taigen metal version leopard.... first long run a bearing failed in the gearbox and broke two teeth off a gear....basically I'm looking for a good replacement to the taigen v2 gearbox and I've seen they have a v3 that's supposed to be way better but I can't find any in stock...I set my tank up with fpv so I'm dying to get it going but I don't wanna waste money on another one that'll break.... do y'all know where I can get one or if there's another better option?

This is the first time I have EVER heard of a V2 gearbox failing, and I have literally installed dozens of those things. What happened on yours is probably a one-in-a-million event, so I would replace it with the exact same gearboxes that were in there. I've tried the V3 and I don't like them, and with a Leo they won't give you the scale speed that you're after. Since it was a taigen tank, I would contact Erik and tell him what happened, I think at the very least he'll offer you a replacement set at a discount. He might even want to see your old ones in order to determine what went wrong. That's very, very rare and like I said, this is the first set that I've ever heard of that has failed.

Well I'm new to all of this so i don't know who Erik is or how to contact him and me being an auto tech for 21 years on a professional level I've already taken it apart lol.... the lil bit of speed difference is fine with me it's the gears I'm concerned with and the v3 supposedly has better quality.... it only made a little bit of noise when it broke and that wasn't much to break those teeth in my opinion... I'm not knocking the brand or anything....I agree this is a one in a million chance judging by the design

You were talking to Erik in your other thread, his screen name is Imex-Erik. Just go to his post and his phone number should be at the bottom. If not, you're looking for the imex model company in Florida. I've tried the v3 gears and I disagree about being a better quality. They're louder and you won't get anywhere close to enough top speed for a modern tank. If it was me, and I've been doing this for about eight years now, I would get a set of V2 Ball Bearing gearboxes in the 3 to 1 ratio and slap them right in that puppy. End of problem. The chances of another set of gearboxes failing on you like that are probably in the millions to one. That's why I said that Erik just might want to see those old gears, because a failure on the V2 is so very, very rare.
And while I make my living as a machinist, I'm also a certified Master Auto Mechanic, certified Master motorcycle mechanic, and a certified rec Trailer Tech. I think that gives us something in common, so you have a friendly ear here in Detroit, just in case you need it.

Ohhhh that Erik lol.... good to hear bro.... I'm picky about building as I'm sure you are.... I've already been emailing the taigen in Florida...awaiting a reply..... what makes the v3 gears not a good as v2? I'm going by what I read on the website

From what I've heard, the main complaint about the V3 is that they are much louder than the V2. If you can hear the gears over the motor sound then it's too loud. I tried a set myself, there's a video around here somewhere, and I decided right away that I would stick with the V2. Your failure is the only V2 gearbox failure that I've heard of yet. I've literally installed dozens of the V2 gearboxes and I've never had a single one fail. And the V3 just won't be able to give you scale speed. A real leopard can hit at least 45 miles per hour, with the V3 gearboxes your scale top speed probably won't be over 25 or 30 miles per hour.

Erik has been pretty busy as of late. Your best bet is to contact him here with a private message, or use the taigen support email. Though, that might have changed since the last time I tried to call. lol

That was indeed a strange one. I've seen a few gears separate from the press process but a stripped one like I've only seen a few times ever, usually the brass pinion fails before the steel gears go. Glad we got you fixed up though!
Just a heads up if you PM me here I might not even see it, the notification is tiny and I just don't happen to look there. The site is easier and while I don't respond to all of the emails a lot are through me one way or another, especially if you ask a difficult question as they are still learning. Oh and container should be here very shortly for those waiting. We got cleared already and we are just waiting on a delivery time now, hopefully in the next day or two.
