That tank would be the Heng Long Tiger. Made in China. You've made a wise choice for an "intro" tank. We do have a few tanks snobs here that believe you must, absolutely must do your "tanking" with a Tamiya or you're just not worthy. They think you're just wasting your time and money but Heng Long is making some major attempts at better quality as of late. Is yours a Sound & Smoke version? Those have been proven to be better overall than their non-smoking counterparts...

That quip was not meant to be a serious disparagement, tomzag.

You get what you pay for, and Tamiya knows it!!!(thus the high price).
I resent "tank snobs" [],I have both HL and Tamiya's.
Tamiyas are absolutly better quality, but HL are fun too!!
A good tank base for this hobby....especially smoke and sound(stay away from the non-smoke and sound if possible)[8D]

All I know is, while most people will tell you how bad the HL tanks are, I'm out logging the hours on mine and enjoying every second of it. The fact that I spent $700 less RTR makes it even more sweeter I won't knock Tamiya as I've built over 200 of their car and truck kits with multiples of most of the good ones. Someday I'd like to try the Tamiya myself. I just don't see the sense in us directing everyone who wants to get their feet wet with the tanks into a $700+ rig. We're not all rich, and you can't overlook that. If you're interested in a HL you can read the review on here that I obviously wasted my time writing

Well, for a first tank if you prefer modern armor then I recommend going with a vstank or a tokyo marui. They are smaller, 1/24, but they are high quality, high detail, and unreasonably durable. I dropped my vs leopard from about five feet, it hit upside down and didn't even suffer a scratch. My HL fell off of a 7 inch tall box and broke two pieces off. The VStanks and tokyo marui won't run well on grass, but do great on dirt and rocks and indoors. Also they come with combat system allready installed, or if you prefer, an airsoft gun, which is more powerful than the HL airsoft gun. Not sure why you would want an rc tank with a powerful airsoft gun but, to each his own.

I have a HL 1/16 pershing and it's a lot of fun, even though the smoker stopped working within a few days. But I like my vstanks more.

Whatever you do, don't buy one of Hen Long's 1/24 scale tanks. I think everyone can agree on that.

The main drawback of the VS and toky marui tanks is that they don't have proportional control. They have 3 speeds forward, 2 turning speeds, and one reverse speed.

HL smoke and sound pershing has "virtual proportional", that means it has like 8 speeds, so it feels a lot like proportional speed control. The other HL 1/16 tanks only have 2 speeds I believe.

Then again, if money isn't that big of an issue for you. By all means get a tamiya, or even one of the more expensive tanks.

Keep in mind, if you buy a tamiya, expect to spend about 20 hours putting it together, then you will need to paint it yourself.

I think the most important thing you have to know when buying a tank, is what you want out of it. I wanted something that would gobble up terrain, especially grass so that was one reason I turned away from the 1/24 VSPro. Another reason was the controller. First and foremost I wanted an airsoft tank. I can't imagine an infrared tank is very much fun if you have noone to battle with. If you run by yourself I think an airsoft tank is the way to go. Mine is one of the rare HL that will actually shoot 75 feet on average, and have broke the 95 foot mark more than a few times. Maybe they recently improved them?? I'm talking about the HL 1/16, I don't think the HL 1/24 shoot very well at all. I've been shooting glow in the dark tracer ammo outdoors in the dark and it flat out rocks! If you have someone to battle with, you may enjoy the infrared more. For me it would be pointless. If I wanted an airsoft 1/24 tank I would have had to buy it from HongKong which also figured into my decision.

I started my tank collection with a 40USD Radio Shack M1A1 ! So, yes start out with something economical to see if you like it and let your ambition (and your wallet) be the limit!

BTW The Radio Shack is still a favourite! Runs better than Tamiya on occassion[sm=eek.gif]

on another note im seriously looking into getting a tamiya later on "once i got the money" i didnt realise how expensive they realy were ... dayum...

whats the durability like on the tamiya as far as if it were to be knocked or lghtly dropped i cant seem to find much info on them in that way, thanks for all your help so far been a real time saver!

I have two Tamiyas and they are pretty tough. [sm=thumbup.gif] The only thing that I ever break are the little plastic parts, like the headlight covers for the Pershing. [:@] Over and over I break those stupid things and have to try to replace them or glue them back! I'm waiting for Backyard Armor to come out with metal replacements and then I will be happy.

So far, I have not had a single problem with the durability of either the Sherman or the Pershing and I run metal tracks on both. I LOVE my tanks.....well, not in a physical way, but if I were a bachelor......nah. They are sexy tanks though!

The Tamiya King Tiger though, seems to have problems with the plastic track links. A friend of mine has difficulty with his nearly every time we have a battle/meeting and it usually winds up setting over to the side. [] The metal tracks would certainly solve that problem, but they are almost $200.00 for a KT, so he is holding off on buying them.

You will throw your HL tank in the trash or give it away when you get a Tamiya. They are NOT perfect by any means and they have their quirks, but they are so much better than the less expensive tanks that there is really no comparison. The only thing is that unless you plan to battle, once the "novelty" wears off, you will probably feel like you put too much money into a tank that has no real purpose other than an occasional cruise through the yard.

......just my opinion

I must warn you, though, that once you start experimenting with model tanks, you may never stop. You may become a parallel to the crazy cat lady. Oh, no!! I'm the crazy tank gentleman!! I have over ten tanks and just can't force myself to let anyone of them go!! You have been warned . . .
