Ethan,

Nice job!

What did you use to get the texture in the paint (shot No 3)?

Thanks

Two step process, I used the Mr. Surfacer but it didn't leave as much texture as I wanted so I sanded down a little an used some Rustoluem texture spray paint I had for our buildings. It is a lot thicker and I plan to use it for my non skid applications from now on.

Wethering stage 1 complete. Just enough to get me through this weekend's battleday. Tank runs like a dream.

Looks great Ethan. I can ADD some battle damage to it on Sunday if you like.

I just installed a TankToko metal upgrade kit to the gearboxes of my SU-122 and am truly impressed with the mobility this vehicle now has. The installation was fairly simple once I figured out how to remove the brass collar from the original vinyl drive gear. I used my cordless drill and chucked the collar and it came off no sweat. I used my small vice to put the new collar and gears on the stock parts and voila. The new set up is much noisier than my original T34 but I will work with that now that the suspension doesn't buckle and skip. Who knows, maybe I will add metal tracks?

I used the email on the TANKTOKO web site to contact them and Gert sent me the sets after I paid via paypal.

I will concur. They make a big difference in this tank. No more skipping nylon gears. Now you have to be careful you don't stall the motors

Very nice job. As soon as my Stug is finished I am moving to an SU100. All the parts are in my shop just waiting on me.

I did the same thing, e-mailing Gert. My gears haven't arrived yet though. Paypal made it easy because it does the currency conversion for you. My T34 is undrivable due to the gears slipping.
Question, do the metal gears get rid of the stupid clutch? Also, don't understand what you did with the drill. Did you unscrew the collars or just use it to hold them so they could be pryed off?
Thanks

The clutch is gone with the metal gears.

Cost was about $45 bucks for both sets. I used the drill to basically unscrew the collars. Low speed and a gentle tug removes the collar collar with little effort.

Both My T34 and SU-122 took home some awards at a local IPMS show. Our goal has always been from the battlefield to the contest table!

Another Zombie post! I have been chastised by many of my enthusiast friends to get my Su-122 running again. It has a WSN lower that had its original gear boxes fail, replacement gear boxes fail... and a Daryl Turner custom upgrade.... unfortunately fail... (sorry Daryl not your fault!) It has sat in boxes or on shelves for at least 5 years so I figure 8 plus years between RCU posts is about right.

So here we go...

Latest config...

WSN / Trumpeter suspension, hen tech Idler upgrade, Tamiya JagdPanther MFU/DMD, Tamiya Pershing Gearboxes modified with custom outdrive by Daryl Turner. TBS gear/Elevation and Recoil by Tamiya.

The trouble is the final drive doesn't keep purchase with the gearboxes. The gears chatter and click. Upon dissassembly i find the plastic final drive cover that was modified with bearings has cracked on the inside and the shaft climbs and skips off the gears. My solution (with a hint from Jeff O) was to make the final drive a solid piece that prevents shaft wobbling. Fortunately I have some spares from a junker Merit T34 (thanks Aimee) I used epoxy to fill the voids. When it dries I will let you know how it went!!!

Silly idea...Maybe incorporate the Tamiya Pershing outdrive system on this tank?

The outdrive works fine except for the chattering with the broken part. I test ran it today and found a new problem…. the old stock WSN springs and arms are slouching causing the tracks road wheels to bind up. This makes the track hit the underside of the sponson and jack it all up. Lets see what I can do about that…..

Some picks of the out dive and suspension work. Put the bearings back in with Daryl's parts. I included a shot of the drive sprocket. Let me tell you it is amazingly sturdy all put back together.

To repair the suspension I actually borrowed from my old pal Streetsquid. He had started work on an Su-85 many moons ago and planned to beef up and reinforce his WSN suspension after seeing some of my early efforts struggle. That project has long since mutated but I still have his chassis and I replaced the WSN parts with.... WSN parts.
