Default 1/8 Scale Armor

Earlier this Month I orderd a 1/8 King Tiger from R/C Armory. I am curious as to how many of you Tankers are into the 1/8 Scale Armor? What you have and What you might have accessorized with.
Thanks a Bunch.

1/8 is good but difficult to find figures and accessories in that scale. The drive trains are very reliable due to the size. Very similar to a 1/6 in handling but a bit more rugged and reliable due to slightly smaller size and weight.
I have a 1/6 Leo 2 and there is another member on here who has a 1/8 King Tiger. Welcome to the Gigantic tank club. They are more addictive than the 1/16s.

I was very tempted by the RC Armory KT, I saw the videos on their website and it blew me away but I was too concerned about what parts I would need to make it right for me and being in the UK it was too big a commitment so I opted for a 1/6 Mark 1 high detail Early Tiger 1 with pyro gunfire as Mark lives just 30 miles from me.
I was also tempted by Marks 1/8 Panther and all metal sherman but finding extras for those were putting doubt into my mind.

My 1/6 Tiger should be with me in around four weeks or maybe sooner, I am getting so excited

My next tank will probably be a 1/8 RC Armory KT because now that I will own a large scale Tiger I feel that I can take the chance with the 1/8 KT as i'll have my other tank so I will be able to take my time and get it just how I want.

I agree with you about the addiction..........Not a cheap one either. As for the Ruggedness of the slightly smaller 1/8 versus 1/6, I can see how that would have a positive cause and effect. Personaly for me the choice to go 1/8 was purely Economical. I could almost build two 1/8th Tanks for the cost of a Quality 1/6th. Tough Sacrifices had to be made however as I do like to have the option of figures and Equipment. The equipment I can build, The Figures however are A whole other Issue. I have a 63' x 32' Spot of useless land that the Wife and I are going to landscape A Battle front on, Grassy planes, Hills, Rivers and Bridges. Add a few burned out buildings and Bingo, Instant Battlefield. She just loves these Tanks, What A Woman
I really enjoyed my 1/16 Tanks and have no problem with that scale. 1/8th will be a bit tougher for extras but I love the Hunt.

I had the 1/10 Sankyo Type 74 and the Sankyo 1/12 King Tiger. Never found any detail items that looked right. I looked at R/C Armory but 1/8 didnt help in the "extras" area. I finally went 1/6 with two 21st Stuarts and finally an Armortek Tiger 1.

I have an RC Armory 1/8 KT too. It's one of the first produced in the 90's and I've made several upgrades including metal track, drive sprokets and idlers.

I believe RC Armory offers figures for $85 and another fellow offers some accessories (see RCArmory.com).

The 1/8 is definately a good compromise in price compared with the quality 1/6 stuff out there. And, it's very manageable, although they still tend to take special care in lifting and moving about -- mine fell from a work trolley and bent the barrel, but everything about it is repairable.

The 1/16 scale is great fun but, there's nothing like the larger scale in realism.

I may try a 1/6 scale that RCArmory is building (StugIII, so not too big to handle). It may be offered as early as this summer.

Cheers...

navspook, Sorry to hear about the fall of your KT, larger scale does have benifits as well as drawbacks.....$$$$ and lots of it. I am aware of the commander figures.
I recently found that the 1/6 scale Toy Kettenkrad has the track system that is about the same as the smaller German half Tracks IE the sdkfz250/3. so using that system to scratch build a 1/8 copy of would work out just about right.
Im Hooked and there is no Cure LOL.
I loved my 1/16 tanks but one day I was adding up what it cost to build my latest Tiger 1, Tamiya Kit, All the Wecohe Upgrades as well as the other goodies, I had as much invested in that as the rolling chassis for the R/C Armory KT, Enough said.........Ordered one.
I plan on a Build thread once here as I see not to much in the way of R/C Armory's Kits and tanks here. I believe yours is the only other one I have seen here. By the way, Excellent Job on the winter white wash you did. Several of those pictures are on my Screen saver now.
Have a great one Navspook.
Trevor.

Thanks, Trev. I'll need to repair/replace the barrel as a result of that fall. Surprisingly, nothing else broke as it fell mostly on its chasis, which absorbed most of the shock, apparently.

Can't wait to see your build thread.

You should have a great time with it.

Cheers...

I think were looking at around the end of March for Delivery of the KT. Sounds like a tough Model to survive a fall like that.

Hello Totenkopf, 1/8 is an excellent scale, especially for the larger modern tanks. Navspook, sorry about your spill, excellent model, good luck with your repairs. Thank you t72 for the Kenny Kong link. I own one of Kenny’s 1/8 M1’s and it’s a beast. I really like the RC armory product and I’m sure you will find it very challenging-and rewarding. Giant scale is not for the faint of heart, in any discipline (aircraft, automobile, armor, nautical). I’m into metal tanks mostly, but I did purchase the figures from RC Armory and he sent along a track link and pin sample (very nice). I also have a 1/8 figure from Kenny Kong. It looks at first glance like a 1/6 (GI Joe) but I haven’t measured / compared.

Vollenc:

Nice hearing from another 1/8 owner. I've heard lots of good stories about Kenny Long's work.

Yes indeed, the RC Armory KT is very tough and Mike D. is sending me a replacement barrel (cost is very minimal). I really like his metal tracks -- very heavy as anyone can imagine and behaves quite realistically over all terrain. I still have the old plastic ones if anyone needs replacement tracks.

Trev: The end of March will seem like forever but meanwhile, maybe use the time to build a work trolley, or clear the work bench. Make a ramp or hoist, etc. Much like preparing for the arrival of a new baby.

Cheers...

I agree that larger scale is more challenging, I do love a challenge. My Main rc interest for years has been Scratch building Large scale warships, 8+ feet in length. I have some pics of a few of them in my Gallery on this site. Its time for a change.

Preperations are already underway, The hobby room is getting a make over. Your Idea of a work trolly sounds great, Just one thing though. Does my work trolly need Air Bags? Just Kidding.
So glad to hear the damage was slight.

SS Totenkopf,
Did you ever take delivery of your King Tiger? If so what do you think? Have been thinking of one of RC Armory's tanks myself. After 4 Tamiya's I think something a bit bigger would be a nice long term project. Thanks, Paul

Uhhh you guys must be really rich. Owning 4 tamiyas...wow. I'm trying to save up for one of those, and I'm having many many second thoughts lol. A 1/8th scale costing at least 4 grand shipped is just something I will never invest in unless I'm rich.

Paul, Yes I did. I received it Last week and have started it. I sold A few Of my Tamiyas to get it, and it was well worth all the Money. Mike at RC Armory is a great guy to deal with. The KT has had a recent upgrade in suspension. The tank I received is the First for this upgrade. Looks very Promising. Below is a Pic of My 1/16 KT (work in Progress) Catching a ride on the 1/8 KT. This is one well designed and manufactured Kit, Very much worth the time and money in my Opinion.

Trev:

It's great to see your KT build is underway. Looks like you're having great fun with it.

I'd like to know what you think about the new suspension once it's in working order. I may ask Mike D. if its possible to retro fit my older KT with the newer suspension.

While you're in this stage of building, you might want to look at water tight seals where the road wheel axles meet the hull. That way, you can ford streams without worrying about taking on water.

BTW, I repaired my gun barrel with no problem at all -- very easy with what Mike had sent.

Cheers...

Will do. When Talking to mike I believe he indicated that he would be making a retrofit for the KT's. I am working with him on the fine tuning of this new suspension. Construction at this point will have some small delay's as we go through this. Right now he is sending me a new set of springs for the coil overs.
