panzer = armour (armor) (more recent usage for tank - originally to knights in ....)
kampf = fight, battle, struggle (as in Mein etc.)
wagen = wagon, vehicle
turm = tower, turret (think castles)

"Sd.Kfz" stays for "Sonderkraftfahrzeug", a generic name used for military vehicles (literally 'special vehicle').

"Ausf." stays for "Ausfuhrung", meaning "version".

Any tank addict is bound to learn some German language basics, isn't it?

Ja, muß ich auch mitstimmen, da wenn Man viel mit Panzer Arbeitet, lernt auch etwas Deutsche sprache dabei. Deutsche Panzer des 2. Weltkrieges sind sehr interesant und wird heufig gebaut.

Think this question has been amply aswered. I have to get my wife to translate the Russian for me. Panzer translated means armor, but generally it refers to a tank. Kampf is battle or fighting, so Panzerkampfwagen would actually translate to armored fighting vehicle (AFV). Modern usage has changed many meanings and altered the basic ideas of the words.

Incidentally, did the news get here (just got back from Germany yesterday) that a Leo II was lost in the Rheine river? Human error. The tank was running, being transported on a barge across the river, when a crewman got in and accidentally shifted into reverse and dropped the tank off into the river. they still have not found him.

FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN WW II ARMOR COMMANDERS. GEN PAULUS WAS THE CG OF 6TH ARMEE AT STALINGRAD AND SURRENDERED IN SPITE OF HITLER'S ORDER TO 'STAND AND FIGHT'. HE HAD NO AMMO OR FOOD AND SURRENDERED. HE IS BURRIED AT BADEN-BADEN AND HERE ARE PHOTOS OF HIS GRAVESITE FOR THOSE INTERESTED. HE WAS BURRIED WITHOUT MILITARY HONORS OR RECOGITION BECAUSE HE OPPOSED HITLERS ORDERS AND SURRENDED TO SAVE HIS MEN.

It was the River Elbe, and yes the driver (23) is still missing. *Finds link* http://news.monstersandcritics.com/e...sing__Roundup_

One thing you have to remember when translateing from German to English and vice-versa is that you can't translate lterally sometime when you do it doesn't make sense or is gramatically incorrect. I once translated some English into German literally and my uboot vet friend read it and said it wasn't correct and the same applied when I went the other way. Sometimes an adjective will preceed the noun in english but but will follow the noun in another language
