Post #7, second row first image... you can see the mesh faintly under the armor slats.

That is odd... not being a Panther.JadgP fan, I wonder why they had the armored slats over one side, and not the other? It looks as if they could be left off and the sides would look identical left and right, or is that a early/mid/late differentiation issue?

Hi Whitewolf the armoured slats were there to regulate the water temperature to the radiator at 70 to 80 degrees C they would be used in conjuction with the crew compartment heater (Kampfraumheizung) to warm the fighting compartment. As the Tamiya JP is the Ausf.G1 not the G2 (countersunk bolts on the rear engine deck, early style exhausts, no crew compartment heater) it should not have those louvres.

Ah...

Like the trucker snap-tarps on the front engine rad grilles! Gotcha. If you were modelling it on a summer-combat unit, the slats would have been pulled as the heater wasn't needed?

Yep!!!! I got the paint on it..in fact i just got done with the camo tonight....Im feeling happy the way it came out so far..for me the most nerve -racking part is the airbrushing of the camo...I go nuts trying to copy the pics Tamiya gives you exact!!!...it can make or break a great build...but so far so good ...next i just have to paint up the little details like the cables and tools and stuff and then add the decals ...then just a coat of clear matt..and ill have some pics up of it all done...I would say by the weekend....

Just got to work on it today. Photos in the AM. Assembled the hull and will focus the images on the installs for the Daryl Turner parts. Chop has documented the build in an outstanding manner, so no need to rerun all the steps.

Thats great!! cant wait to see what you do with yours..I really wish the build could of lasted longer..I really took my time but when i start building i just cant stop..i went night and day...for three days.. Thank you for the interest. The build is not a detailed TamiyaCon Contest Tank type build, but a fun backyard runner.

Wouldn't you know it, I have the sinus cold junk that is going around Southern California plus a 4 day rain storm is forecast.

Before the rains arrive, I wanted to jump ahead and get the hull primered and some basic work on the road wheels accomplished.

I will highlight the "build differences" from Chops excellent Tamiya Jadgpanther Build Pictorial.

The purposes for the "minor build differences" is to create an improved, good running, reliable, basic and budget conscious battle day Tamiya Battle Unit (TBU) Tank.

Final paint is undecided at this point, but I am researching and that is one of my favorite parts of the build process.

The hull assembles just like the Tiger I with a similar idler adjustment setup.

The Hull:

Enlarge four of the 6 Tamiya gear box mount holes to 4 mm holes in preparation for the Daryl Turner Gear box mount brace.

I use Red Loctite for "only" the hull metal to metal nuts & bolts parts, because this is a TBU play hard tank and I know from experience if I don't
I will litter either my backyard or someones battlefield with dozens of impossible to see nuts and bolts.

Use the Tamiya Blue Thread Lock for plastic to metal parts, "very important". Loctite will ruin your plastic parts.

All the suspension arm set screws are in place before painting. Don't get paint in spaces where the axles fit.

I used Impact Metal Glacis Plate Spocket Guides.

They hold the tank's glacis plate in place a little bit better than the stock plastic parts.

Important when running on uneven terrain.

Road wheels:

I am using Stella's bearings, but I degreased them first with Orange Degreaser.

I base painted the road wheels on the trees to speed things up plus the cleanup area will not show. It is concealed by the tire.

1. End of the rattle can part of the build. Use a mask and spray outside. I used Tamiya Surface Primer, TS-1 Red Brown and TS-2 Dark Green on the hull.

2. Bearing install. The road wheels are painted in a "looks OK to me" mix of dark green and a gray-white.

3. Secret performance weapon (if I get the new pinion gears from Bob and Willy at ETO).

Question, how far back from the barrel tip should you place the emitter?

9mm or the depth of the emitter holder that clips on the barrel. (the muzzle brake is measured on those barrels with one)

Some nice building going on here, you guys are having fun and I wish I was. Keep the pics coming even if they if there the same, It's fun to see each ones progress.

Photo Update:

Re-installed tracks in proper direction.

Assembled and installed the road wheels.
Installed the Daryl Turner gearbox mount brace.
Installed and adjusted the Impact Sprockets and Tracks. Used them because of all the cool detail, but the Tamiya parts are "good" in my kit.
If I get pinion gears from ETO, I will install the Graupner 400 Speed Motors.
I am working on the rest of the assembly, but no painting for awhile as I wait out the rainy weather.
Still researching what the finish will be.
