Default question for the elctomagicians

Hi Guys Is it posible to wire a luxeon K2 led for muzzle flash if so what is required i was thinking of removing it from holder and fitting in muzzle brake. or is not posible to remove from the holder the flash from one of these is supposed to be ten times brighter than ultrabrirght led or is it not posible see site http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/05027-pw1...ns-p-1377.html

Pete,

If you are talking about using it on a HL, although is does not give you the exact voltage on the product description sheet two things stand out! One is takes 1500 mili amps or 1.5 amps you won't get that off of your Heng Long board and th unit requires a heat sink, it is not a holder is is a heatsink to disipate the heat with that much current in such a small device!

Hi blitz the muzzel brake on my tiger is metal so this could be the heat sink i was thinking of 5volt supply and switching form the recoil read or microswitch do you think its a posibility to do the tamiya muzzle flash is very expencive looking for alternative

best regards pete

I think Luxeons probably are really designed for constant brightness, hence the high power and high heat-sinking.

You can probably get a good flash from a more-mediocre (and cheaper) white LED, by using a high pulse current. Most datasheets will list the pulse current capability separate from the continuous current, and it's not uncommon to be able to pulse 1 amp through (at say a <20% duty cycle) a LED which would normally only be capable of 100ma. You just have to calculate a different resistor based on the pulse current.

Not sure what the Heng Long board is capable w.r.t. the "firing flash mod". If you wanted to be safe, a FET would limit the current the board would see, while allowing a nice fat pulse spike to the LED.

Oh, and if you wanted a cheap strobe alternative, you can often get disposable camera strobes for free from places that develop film. Or for like $1 from surplus stores.

I suppose you could charge a large(ish) capacitor up then dump it across the luxeon? Do you know the firing rate of the tank? this could be used to give some realism to the flash rate. I'd use a 'standard' LED, look on eBay and you can find some pretty impressive output capacity from small form factors with out having to resort to using luxeon, which also has quite a large form factor, to big to fit into the barrel.

Yours Simon M.

Hi Darkith the k2 was designed for mobile phone flash for the new generation phones with 4megapixal to give better flash they are made by Philips and throw the light better than earlier flashes also know used in flashlights .I was thinking of using 3 aaa batteries for power source and activating with a micro switch or read switch the reason I thought of these is the size its possible to fit it in the muzzle brake and still allow it to fire BBs don’t no how big the flash unit is from disposable camera but its a good idea and cheap. My other option is 3 mm ultra bright led this will go in the muzzle brake but not as bright as the K2. Just going through the possibilities before making my mind up which to fit. This going to go in my BB firing recoiling gun in my tiger. Then I have to work out how to make it smoke after firing.

samarkh yes thats an option but was trying to keep my BBgun working already got it to recoil and fire i have these daft ideas then try to find the solution i will probably try 3mm ultra bright led first as these or only 90 p just to see if i can time the muzzle flash to the BB firing and recoil but iwould like a big flash like the tamiyas .

best regards thanks for your input Pete
