Default Stug from Mato

Sooo I receive my Stug and open it to check the gears and low and behold plastic gears.... If I had known they were misrepresenting the tank as having metal gears I would have bought it from RCCommand... anyone else had this problem???

I just checked mine and mine are metal, I'd get a hold of them to get that straightened out.

Is it an S&S as well?

I just took a look at the Mato Stug webpage- it says straight out that it comes with metal engines and even has a pic. I'm sure that you inadvertently got a mis-shipped plastic gear Stug sent to Mato. Of course, the question arises as to how they could test the tank (as it says they do) without noticing the quiet gears. There is a drastic difference between even broken in steel gears and plastic gears in the sound....

I'm sure that if you let them know of the mixup they will send you a set of steel gears, then you'll have a spare plastic drivetrain!

It is clearly advertised as metal. Mato usually makes things right, I wouldn't be too concerned. You will probably end up with an extra gearbox out of this. I am still waiting for mine. There better be metal gears in the tank, if not I guess i'll be getting a free set of gears as well!!!! Smittyrob got metal gears, so I hope I do as well.

I don't see why they wouldn't. There is nothing special about these , other then the placement of the drive motor. The gear ratio is the same as any Heng Long gear box.

Any reason the metal gearboxes used in say, the Panzer III, won't fit? Are the ones pictured shorter than the PIII boxes or not?

I know the ones made by someone else were not as tall, but from what's been posted, other than engine placement these gear boxes appear no different than the earlier HL ones. Since the hull shouldn't be different, nor the back of the upper hull from the PIII, not sure why they would have changed them at all.

The "low profile" boxes built by whoever I believe were made to accomodate the airsoft.

I aked Bill that same question and he said that the top Hull sits lower then the P-III so they had to lower the motor, and yes they just added a bracket so you can service it and moved the pinion point, same gear ratio!

The Blitz

PS I grew up in Washington hope to move back there in about 5 years!

Interesting. Is that true to the actual StuG? I was under the impression for all intents and purposes the hull and rear upper were identical in significant structural aspects.

It seems they made a mistake (or the factory did) and are happy to correct the problem.

I withdraw my previous comment.

I received a similar canned response, they wanted to send me a new receiver board because the tank I received simply did not work, (the lights didn't flash when it was turned on, and the tank wouldn't start at all) they told me the same thing, we send...you install... is that ok..?? Well, no it's not ok. They gave me an RMA and I sent it back and told them to repair/or replace the tank or refund my payment. I guess you'd have to decide if it's cheaper to send it back for a replacement, or spend the time to swap it out your self. I decided to send it back because even if I installed a new board, there's no guarantee it would fix the problem, whatever it is. They seem to stand behind their product, but they don't make it easy to get a defective unit replaced, I'll tell you that.

I always encourage people to fix the problem rather then send it back. Sooner or later you are going to be faced with a tank repair. I don't care what brand you own. You might as well roll up the sleeves and get right after it. None of these thing are RTR forever. Sooner or later something breaks.

Just for the record. THs problem you had was a while ago and not with the new Heng Long Stug, right???

You still need the low profile gearboxes to make room for the gun "breech" recoil mechanism, or whatever, as the high mounted motor in the PIII gets in the way. There shouldn't be any difference in the hull top height.

No, that's not right. As a matter of fact this is this first problem I've had with any brand new RC tank, HL or otherwise. For the record... I even asked Blitz for help since he's worked on quite a few of my tanks with upgrades/mods and the like, his response was that there are just too many things that could be causing that kind of problem, and he recommended I send it back to Mato, which I did. If Blitz wouldn't even recommend it, there's no way in the world I'm going to attempt it, but thanks for the encouragement, I do try to do as much on my own as possible, within my capabilities of course.

My Stug was DOA as well. Turned out the power plug to the electronics module need to be pushed in further. That is why I always suggest poking around a little. The whole return process is so cumbersome and time consuming. The new Heng long electonics are all plug and play, so changing out fried electronics has never been easier.

I only hope these new electronics are stocked as spares in the near future and Darkith can do somehting to make them IR Tamiya compatible
