Default Colourguide

My english is not very good, so it´not really easy to show you how i do this. I hope the pictures will help.

Part1

Befor i color a modell, i sand all parts, mostly times i do this when i build it. Sandpapier, Sandingblock or sanding fleece material 240-400

After sanding, i clean the parts with alcohol(75%-100% for all parts ), or nitro( only metallparts ). The modell must be free, of grease, dirt and settled dust

now, i brush the basic colour ( at this fall Tamiya XF 57 )

after this step was doing, i will remake the decals with coreldraw and print this out at regulary papier. than i cut this out.

i fixed this with tape, than i brush this again

if the decals are not ok, i restart with basiccolor ( just sanding and brush again )

if its ok, i take mate varnish over all

Part 2

now, we come to the first effects.

Shadows and brightening...

For shadow i used XF 51 Khaki drab, it fit to all desertyellow colours as shadow.

First i brush all Corners and Cants, also Bolts and Slots. For the first it looks way to strong, but we will fix this soon. When this is try i go back to the Basiscolor and Brush over the Shadows how looks to much. No, we see, Basiccolor ( XF 57Buff ), XF 51 Khaki drab, and something else between this both colors. Important is that you brush it cloudly

Here you can see the differents.

At next i use Filterset from MIG (P403 AfrikaCorps Filters Set )

The Filters are working great and the colours looking more homogeneously. For the Top i used ochre, for the suspension ( you can see this at the moment ) i will use the brown one. Another special Effect

I put the Filter on the Modell with an large soft brush, first the roof of the turret, than the side of the turret. Don´t brush the hole tank in one, cause you need time to work with the Filter.

on the Top i used an Kitchen Papier and dab it into the wet Filter...

...after this i´m going to the side...

... and i´m going up and down with the brush ( little harder brush ). Very important is, that you don´t have some drop formation

Here you can see our first effects

it´s still wet, when its try looks much better.

Same steps you can do with the suspension and the brown filter

Rost and Scratches
For rosty parts i first brush the Parts with Tamiya XF64, you can use also lighter, or darker Brown

For an better effect, if you don´t have en real rost set ( like me this time ), i use MIGRust effects and dip this with an small soft brush into the Brown color. Here you can play till it looks like you want.

At very small parts you can do it, without brown color befor, like this...

If you want, some bolts or nuts rosty, i just take the MIGRost Effect brush this around the bolt or nut and than a little downwards

With an Q-Tip you can make this much smaller, more effectfully

see this

Befor, we brushed the Muffler, with Tamiya Brown and MIGRost Effect. What we need is more Shadows in there. Here i use Vallejo Sepia. I put this stuff on an piece of paper and than with an small softly brush i dip this on the Muffler.

Scrachtes and Chippings

For Scratches and Chippings i use darkbrown, darkgrey and Basiccolor. I put the scratches to the Modell with an 10/0 Brush. Important is that you don´t do it consistent. Befor you do it look at Original Pictures where are the Scratches, this will help very much.
At Suspension and Fenders, Bumpers are much more than on top of the turret.

First i made this with the darker color, than for more Effect direct beside the dark scratch with Basiccolour. You also can do this with Rost. For Exemple Corners around the Case.

Chippings

Easy to do and great effects....

You need an sponge and made this in little Pieces....

than you dip this into the color ( braun, - grau ) and dip this first on an piece of papier. Here you can see how much color is an the sponge. If this is ok, you dip this on the modell. Less is more

Exemple

Details of workingsteps and effects

Basiccolor, Shadows, Filters, Chipping and Scratches

Now we coming to the end

Finishing

At the next step i made the suspension dusty. For this i brush earthflat and desert yellow , direction like the shafts i draw into the Picture

I let the tank run and go than with sandpapier over the Chains.

After the steps befor are all try, i save this again with mate varnish.

For better Metall effects i take Graphitpowder, and put this on a sheed of papier

Now , i circling with my little finger in this. The powder sticks on the Finger. Blow over the finger, so that loose powder flew away.
Here you can see the Metall effect. Now you just put this where you want it

Thats it. I hope my little Guide will help you.

This is some valuable information and really gets me excited about starting on my HL Pz III. Some of the techniques described are new to me and I look forward to trying them out. While I haven't painted a tank yet I have finished off a warbird or two in my day and I think that experience will help me with my Panzer. Here's pic of what I'm refering to.

Where can I get pictures or illustrations of Pz IIIs to use for documentation and color guides? I need to locate a particular tank to model.

Great job volvospeed and thanks for your contribution and efforts!

Al

Pin this to the top of the forum, guys.

Volvo, that was a MASTERCLASS.

Not only are your models beautifully built (interesting subjects too), your finishing is second to none. Your tanks belong in a museum.

Just a total inspiration. Thank you.

Shep

Volovlspeed,
Do you have any recommendation on weathering an already camoed tank? I have the camo on and over sprayed with gloss coat for the decals and have stopped there. Really not sure on the next step. Any thoughts from you would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Thanks to all for the nice commands. I like to spend time, if i can help. So don´t worry

@1sgt

As example i take my sherman

This one have an two tone , but i think dosent matter it´s 2 or 3 tone color painted

next step if i was at you place, i would do shadows. So, if you are not shure where the shadows are take an lamp, let it shine to the Modell. Put the Modell at the Ground, the Lamp at a table and see where the Shadows are. At the dark sides you can spray cloudly khakidrab ( fit to the most colors). If you are not shure, the an Plasticcard and test it there. Also, spray it very thin around the mainlines and corners.

next step ( you don´t need this mostly times at 2 and more tone tanks, is just important for 1 tone ) brighness at top of the tank, looks like the sun optical whitening.

Take the ground color ( brown, green, whatelse you have ) mix this a little brighter, or take an complete tone lighter. Again, you spray this cloudly to the parts. Hope you understand what i mean.

Did you have some Pics of your tank? Makes it easier.

If not, please take pictures from all sides and post it into this thread. At weekend i will take the pics and look what i can do for u

Default RE: Colourguide

Ok, a while ago i was colouring a tank from a friend. This was an 3 Camo.

So what i would do:

1. Filtering

yellowbrown - ockre all around, suspension grey-braun to get to colors more homogenious

2. Washing with black

to get more dimensional (doors )

3. mate varnish

4. Tamiya XF 51 Khakidrab ( Shadows )
around corners, bolts, suspension

5. Chippings with grey ( Tamiya XF 24 or Germangrey ), Umbra( very dark braun, close black, little, older rosty chippings ), desertyellow ( the colour what you use for this, made this into the green and braun ) Sponge Technic

- Suspension
- Fenders
- around the doors,handles

grey is very good for german vehicles cause the most ones where grey befor they became an camo. Also fit very good to all your colours

5. Scratches

Here you can use XF24 or Germangrey ( scratches not going down to metall )or/and Umbra( very dark braun, close black, little, older rosty scratches), and / or desertyellow, brush 10/0

6. Rost

real Rost Set, or different Technic, not to much just special parts ( regular metall, no Tanksteel)

at Muffler, some Screws/Bolts, Handles

7. Smoke Tamiya XF1

spray this cloudly with airgun

Barrel, MG, Airintakes ( very thin )

8. Dirt

For Dirt you can use From light grey to brown. In your Fall i would say something like light grey

9. mate Varnish

10. last but not least Metall Effects with Graphitpowder

Hope this will help you a little
