Has anyone used the hellfire with a starter box? I tried it with the Duratrax box and the slot to engage the flywheel doesn't seem large enough. Can the starter boxes provide the force needed for these larger engines?

Yes you can use a starter box. I use the Offna starter box. I also have the roto back plate just in case i have a dead battery.

That's exactly what I would like to do. I already have the roto-start backplate installed, but I've burned through two Pullstart Shaft Holders (15233) within three tanks of gas. Why they put this one-way bearing on the inside of the engine is beyond me. I've burned through one on the Savage 4.6 SS (which is the same part) in two tanks of gas.

Which starter box do you have? I see Ofna offers many versions. The problem with the Duratrax starter box is there isn't enough room in the slot of the Hellfire for the starter box wheel to engage the flywheel.

A larger flywheel will help.

i use a starter box for my hell fire.
you will have to install a larger fly wheel to get the starter box to work.
i use the ofna three pin fly wheel and the ofna starter box when you find the sweet spot and the fly wheel gets lined up with the wheel in the starter box it works great.
if you don't find this sweet spot you will grind down the wheel in the starter box real quick.
i took my dremel tool with a sanding drum and rounded all the edges on the bottom of the truck where the fly wheel is
make it all rounded and smoothe.
also i did away with the battery and switches in the starter box ans wired it dirwct to the two cables thar=t go directly to the battery on my cae to the starter box,
this works greart if you can find that sweet spot.
i have a nova rossie 528 rex in it.
thx Dirby,

I went to buy the hellfire this past weekend. I have 3 LHS around me and 2 of the 3 have hellfires in stock. I went to the first one (which I trust the guy there with his oppinions) and he told me he would rather not see me buy a hellfire. I then asked him why and he told me there is alot of slop through out the entire truck and he has had alot of reports of durability and build quality issues so I didnt buy it. I did take it out of the box and looked at it closely. He is correct in all the slop. It felt like the whole truck was loose. So I left and went to the other shop and they told me the exact same thing so that completely put me out of buying a hellfire. If they have it sitting there ready to be sold and tell me outright not to buy it then there is some serious issues and both of my LHS guys are top notch and strait up with me which i like.

yes the truck out of the box needs to be shimmed and gone thru as you should with ALL brands of performance trucks ANY RTR you buy will need to be prepped for the track including shimming and locktite all the screws.. if you are a basher ,with no want to put the truck on the track ... dont buy a truggy they ALL will break .....if you want to race i recommend the hellfire or CRT ....I have a hellfire and after about 4 hours of time and 3 $ of shims and washers and locktite and a new top of the line JR t3000z servo for steering i had a very nice truggy out of my workshop ... now it has all the goodies FM JR radio equipment and picco power JP pipe and Panther tires ..it just plain rocks and is super competitive even with the local Jammins and LSPs
dont buy the truck if you are not a tinkerer or a basher it will not suit you
get a savage or LST2

Well its kind of hard to race a truggy here in maryland concidering there arent any tracks to race at. I suspect HPI will do some sort of update to the hellfire in the future and address these problems. HPI is really good about that stuff. Lets face the facts here. There shouldnt be any need to shim stuff on a new truck to take up and correct alot of slop.

Go do the same thing with a CRT...you will find the same issues.

ALso the A Arm problem is fixed...I have the new arms put out by HPI..
The rest of it depends on how well you maintain your truck. It need to be look at from top to bottom.
What probly happened was your LHS know what is fixing to be comming out and they are holding it for them selves..LOL

have you fixed the slop in the rod ends as you will find that is were most of it is
i took out the balls and ran a real light coat of CA around the hole of the rod ends and AFTER IT DRIED i put the balls back in and voila it is tighter than a frogs ass now
then the only slop in the ackerman is vertically which is fine and will not affect your handling you dont want to shim it to the top plate as it WILL bind up on you if you crash and hurt somthing else
just fix the rod ends and balls

Another thing hobby shops are having to contend with is new comers to the hobby. sometimes they leave with unrealistic expectations and instead of spending some time with a customer giving a bit of schooling, they try to assess if someone is going to be a pain to deal with in future if things go wrong.

the slop issue is minor and might be there to add a dimension of give to the whole chassis (only a guess). hpi know racers who have been in the hobby for a while are going to take things apart to sharpen it up anyway.

I think we need to assess if a hobby shop is willing to provide the support we're after as a enthusiast customer. And we need to be Real about our expectations as well, of course I'm saying this from a position of haven been in the hobby for more than a few years with a bit fleet.
