I'm running a 15t Clutchbell on the HPI .28 and, I'm just as fast (if not faster due to driving ability) as the $400 engine guys (and, i run a little richer than most). I'm not sure how long of tracks you guys are running on but, I think the HPI .28 is more than enuff for any track - In fact i can't see why you'd want a different engine unless you were doing tractor pulls, have size limits or possibly wanted better fuel economy (the .28 is thirsty). Grant you: the midrange needle is a bit tricky to get right - 2 needle carb woulda been better. I'd say if you don't think the .28 that it comes w/ is enuff engine you need to work on tuning a little better! If you just have too much money and, have to burn it on something that has a big dollar name so you can sound fast - give me some of your extra $ so i can by the essentials and, still beat you! LOL

I will have to disagree with you on the motor quality.. Yes the motor is fine and YES it has alot to do with driver ability. But the stock motor is not where close to being in the same league as the OS,Rossi's,RB concepts etc. Its a good motor and is pretty fast and torquey, but far more inferior. Its not about how fast it is..It tunning ability, how linear and smooth, or even speratic and top end ability or all of the above. I run two motors and they cover what i need for all of the tracks I run depending on which track i run.

Dirby,Yes that is a man of a motor. I know several running them. Also look into the Rb concepts 7 port .28.. that thing is freaking awesome. Torque out of this world

I'd agree with that statement and go on to say that it's worth running cause around the gallon mark it really wakes up which is similar to how RB's and Novarossi behave. Different class of motors yes but i don't think it's worth dis-counting cause with a decent pipe on it like a Novarossi 9886, for the average driver, it would allow them time to save money toward a higher end engine.

I bought a K4.6 to run in my LST over the winter, saving my RB 928 for the season. I have to admit that my laptimes over the winter were repectable given the difficulty in keeping the temps up over the winter. I ran last weekend and my fastest lap with the K4.6 was .052 slower than one of my fastest laps toward the end of last season. The 4.6 HO has been improved so I'd hazard to guess I could match my fastest laptime with the new engine. When you factor in the price difference between the two, you have to ask yourself some serious questions about how you want to spend your money.

I'm a RB/Novarossi fan and for racing wouldn't put my money on anything else but there is a disappointing engine snobery in engine threads. There are good engines to suit a host of budgets and the questions on engines should begin with how much money one has to spend or if money is no object. It should then be followed by how much experience and if you bash, race or do both.

Then there's the new engines from Ninja and when you consider who's behind them and the spec, they're bound to be good and worth a shout.

Absolutley. There is always a flavor of the month.

I think what you said about the mugen (ninja) motors is very accurate. I think you will satrt to see alot of good feedback and reports on how they perform well on the race track.

I dont think people should run out and buy another motor becuase they have the money or its because someone said to. If your serious about racing and have the money you would do so anyways, and choose the motor that fits your needs. We all fall victim to he said she said. The k4.6 is a great motor that puts out some good power. I still have mine to this day as a back up back up,but wouldnt be afraid to run it in pro series race. Im a OS fan and will be for life especically since JP is modding them now. I dont think buying the mod version over the standard turbo version is worth it,becuase I cant see it putting out very much more power than it does already. Add in some ceramic crank bearings and maybe have it hard coated and your set. I have not the first sign of scratching on my back plate. Its putting up good numbers and I have larned its personality.

Hey guys.. I should be getting my hellfire in a week or so. I made a forum: hellfire or mayhem ST. Everyone that posted said go for the Mayhem with DX2 as the total package and no one responded saying go with the Hellfire.
I just wanted some opinions from hellfire owners before I make my choice. I know the hellfire will be a really good truck in the future but to get it to that level seems like you have to put a lot of $$$$$ into it. I'm new to RC and will probably do a lil racing but mostly bashing.

I don't believe it needs any more money thrown at it than any other RTR in the class, change the steering servo, shim some of the slop out of the wheels, change the shock oil to a heavier set-up, put some racing tires on and it would be as competitive as the rest. Then it would be down to your driving skills, it's a good truck. Next upgrade the pipe to release some more power and you're set. For me the only attraction to the Mayhem would be the radio.

By the way, I don't own a helfire but have been racing against them with my CRT. A few of us are track friends and we swap trucks to check each others kits so my commented have been my experience of the trucks. The Mayhems short wheelbase makes the handleing a bit too nervous for my taste.

spend some big bucks and get a jammin truggy kit than add all the rest of the goodies and you will probably have 1200.00 to 1400.00 in it.
one thing is for sure you can't take it with you.

Hey guys, new to the board. Great site! I found this thread searching for Hellfire info. I just picked one up last week. I had been driving it in the yard trying to get the engine tuned in. On the fifth tank the left front wheel came off. Nut worked loose. Surprisingly, I was able to find the nut. It was kind of funny after the fact - the wheel rolling off into the sunset as the hellfire started to do small turns due to the wheel missing.

I have the left side nuts cranked down with lock-tite. My question is - what in the heck was HPI thinking not reversing the threads on the left side hub adapters? Cheaper to manufacture, sure - wouldn't have the different colors of silver and blank - guess that would be a downside, but geez - doesn't make much sense.

Reminds me of the song, "You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me Loose Wheel" I think that's how it went.....Maybe not.

Well I think I'm gonna be going with the Mayhem ST for now then maybe wait till the HellFire Kit becomes available. And see what that has to offer. Hopefully someone will buy the Hellfire. Thanks for your input guys.

For all who want to know the real deal on the HPI Hellfire.........BE AWARE THAT THE NEW HELLFIRE HAS A DEFECTIVE STERING SERVO! IT WILL CRAP OUT....The plastic gears are junk. I was in the middle of breakin on my NEW hellfire when the Servo took a huge CRAP. The customer service rep said that this was a big problem that they are experiencing right now. This thread was just to let all the potentially new buyers Know what they could be getting.[:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@]

ok all this really needs to stop. look the hellfire is awsome probably 1 of the top three right now just because its not perfect doesnet mean people shoul hate on it ok a few parts are defective (weel if you ever decide to use stock servos you crazy unless its just a nother toy and u dont plan to race) i personally always use ko prpo 2366ics for sterring and hitec 5988tg for throttle and breake so and the a-arm thing i suggest not trying to bash this truck ive been racing mine now for well since the third day of realesa (im in partnership with my lhs and he gave me one for free) so im fortunate i love the truck best handling ever i think still better than kyosho 777 st-r u need to make some minor chassis setup adjustment to suit your style but over all it awsome see review and test in new issue of rccaraction mag farewale to all

DonBeatYa - See, this is where you don't really qualify to have an opinion! You got your truck for free = you didn't have to throw down the $600 or so bucks and, then go buy servo's, and, all the stuff to get it up to race quality on top of that! I really like the design and, its ridgid layout but, dumping anther $250 for a decent radio (Spektrum) and, steering servo was not somehting i was thrilled about! for 600 they should at least include a decent FM Radio and, a Steering servo worth a crap.

I'm just one of the impatient ppl who has to have the newest/ latest/ greatest. If I could have helped myself i'd much rather have bought the kit and, skipped the junk electronics it comes with and, saved some $!

I guess I was the lucky one who stripped it all down and sold it on ebay...

But you know what bottom line is its all worth it. If your serious about racing, then those things will be bought regardless. Racers will race and go to no limits to get the edge on the competetion. I really quit counting on how much I have in my Hellfire. But I do know whith all the upgrades, hopups etc. i cant blame the truck now becuase I do have all the latest and greatest and they will soon be available to all of you,and they are weeeellllllllllll worth it!
