RE: Official Hyper ST thread!!
Thanks for the advice Bcane. I'll probably do some wrenching this weekend and give this a shot. So there are 2 shims? And only need to remove one? Did you have to retune the engine after doing this mod?
Things to do this weekend:
1. Remove shim
2. Change suspension (need to adjust the shocks and tinker a bit)
3. Cut holes in the body for ventilation
I retuned a bit for my new glow plug tonight and it was running closer to 280 max. The only time it spiked over 300 was right near the end of the tank of gas (which is going to happen I assume). So I think it's pretty tuned. That truck was FLYING around the track tonight though. Jumping like mad, etc. This thing has really come alive. It's taking a HUGE beating too....being that I'm new Not a single crack in that baby's armor.

ORIGINAL: nitro _ burner
The engine, i would imagine will need a LOT of re-tuning if you remove the shim.

These are the settings I used after reading XRC mag and their settings...
HSN: 1 turn clockwise from flush (top of barrel)
LSN: 1/2 rich from flulsh...

So just got done running it a while. Still running a bit hot (near 300), but didn't have my drill with me to cut some ventilation holes in the body. One thing that happened was my pull start head came off the cord...and I'm assuming the cord is inside the housing now. I'm guessing I can just take the backplate off and rethread it. I'm hoping at least.

RE: Official Hyper ST thread!!
It took me 2 full tanks before the engine temps started to drop. It started to run in the 270's, and now it is in the 250's. Of course I have tuned it since then and couldn;t tell you exactly where the needles are, but they are still close to that I have above. Run both needles at flush and tune from there. Make sure your MSN is flush; the screw in mine is in the Up/Down direction. The MSN seams a tad loose to me, so I keep an eye on it especially if my temps start rising. Haven;t had any issues lately though.
You are running Nitro that is 25% or less right... I also run a medium hot plug instead of a cold plug. I don't change plugs until I get about 1 gallon through the engine.

Yeah I'm running 20% nitro. Engine temps seem to stay around 280-290 until towards the end of the tank of gas...at which time it can spike upwards of 320 (which it's going to do since the engine is starting to run a lot more lean at that point). I have yet to cut the hole in my body to let the engine breathe. I think that will lower the temps 5-10 degrees minimum.

Ya you definitely have to put plenty of holes in the wind shield. I did mine with a Duratrax reamer all over the windshield. I would say that helps with my lower temps, but that alone will not get the engine temps down. I tried it before I removed the shim, not much help.
You only took out the silver shim right?
Check your MSN to ensure it is factory flush... If it is then I suggest 1/4 turn rich on both LSN and HSN and then go from there.

RE: Official Hyper ST thread!!
bcane,
Have you converted your HyperST to a starter box yet? If so, did you do it using the MacStar engine? I'm having trouble trying to figure out how this backplate fits onto the back of the engine. It's really strange. Almost as if it fits *inside* the old pullstart housing.
Any advice you may have would be appreciated. I can try to take some pics tonight to better explain if that would help.

I have not converted yet, but it's easy. The backplate you are talking about should have 2 groove on the part that goes inside the engine. Those grooves point towards the top of the engine for when the piston comes down it doesn't hit the back plate... I will help in anyway I can
I just upgraded my engine to an Axial 28 rr with a JP3... All I can say is OMFG!!! AWESOME!!!

ok, figured it out. Thanks for the advice. I didn't realize there was another plate to take off the back there. Everything is on now...hoping I can charge my 12v battery for my starter box and get this thing running again tomorrow. Can't wait

All depends on the wheels your gonna put on... Sorry, there is no default answer... I am running the stockers right now and they seem to be doing very well for the bashers and the racers...

RE: Official Hyper ST thread!!
I've had no issues. The only recommendation I have read was to replace the stock springs with fuel tube. Some people want extreme endo style stopping power... not me. I've heard of one person putting 9.5 brakes on it, but IMO I think that is too much work for so little pay off.
