Hi just bought a hellfire brand new and run in. My friend has purchased a savage X. Both are stock.
Can anyone tell me whether the 4.6ho performs better than the standard 4.6 or vice versa as he leaves me behind in straight line speed?
Could it be my car is not tuned properly?? What are the specs on both engines?
One would think the ho(high output) would outperform the no high output(lol:). If someone knows please help......thank you.

Hey all, new to the forum but have been involved in rc a while.. having an issue with my hellfire ss, built and nothing seemed to be binding and then started my picco26 last night, now it seems that when i spun it up (rpms) the right rear wheel was binding , left rear a little too, anyone have these issues with a hellfire? Is there a known issue with the diffs? Any insight would be helpful before I break down the whole backend of the truck... I know its not the brakes dragging cause the one side being slower. also when spinning the left wheel by hand , the right wheel doesnt turn half as many times.. My theory is the diff but it was working fine, may its just cause its new , idk..

RE: Official HPI Hellfire Thread

WElife, i had the ho4.6 in my hf and it went ok, lots of low torque and good top speed (nothing like the top engines though).I read on another forum the ho4.6 doesnt provide as much power as the standard4.6 but there isnt much difference. I assume the savage would be heavier than the hf so i dont see how the savage would be faster unless you arent tuned correctly or your engine has lost compression etc. Although i did read the savage x is advertised at going 70+ kms/hr? the rtr hf does only about 60k/hr. The hf should handle alot better than the savage. My ho4.6 has about 6 gal through it and still running good but i have the os28 in it now, ballistic.

Nitrofarmer, the hf has many diff issues. Unless you have shimmed correctly your diffs wont last long. I have stripped many pinions and the plastic diff cases warp if not shimmed right. I dont know if the diff is your problem but highly likely. What diff oils you running? If you hold the spur gear tight and push the hf do you hear clicking noises from the diffs and the wheels move on each click?

Hi Hellfire people,

I just bought a used HF and the track people are saying my HF will not be able to handle the toughness of the track and asked me to sell it. I guess I made a wrong purchase? Is the HF really that bad? Are they still a competitive truggy? I see HPI dropped the SS kit. Man i guess no one is buying it!!

Thanks
Where are you racing..Delta?
The Hellfire is not that bad..I raced mine for a while and NEVER DNF'ed a race..ever..I even won a few times with it..But you do need to do a few things to make it last. The SS did address most problem areas, I switched to HB's ring and pinion gears, for the most part I did resist going for "HUGE AIR" but other than that you should not have to many problems. The biggest problem that the Hellfire has is it's to stiff, Your suspension has to be right on the money, If you land wrong..biff a jump the energy has to go somewhere..most truggys their chassis has some flex designed into them..the Hellfire does not have very much flex in the chassis and this is why the rear suspension mounts and shock towers bend..it's all about the transfer of energy..Once you understand this and how to deal with it the Hellfire is raceable

I can get a hellfire ss kit with a XR2i AM w/1-Z590M & 1-Z270 all NIB for $360 shipped. Is it worth it?

I have read most of this forum and understand the issues w/ the hellfire. However, I am still drawn to it. I have a Losi 8ight-t, that I bought as a RTR. Now I want a kit to build from ground up for the experience. I do not want to throw $$ away, and that is why I am asking for your thoughts.

Thanks

RE: Official HPI Hellfire Thread

I think most people will say dont get it but at that price it might be good value. The ss has some issues but all trugs do. The ss has many setup options and you need to test alot of setups to find the right one for different conditions. Heaps of info at truggyracers.com on the hellfire.
Overall most hf ownwers spent alot of $ and time on their hf before giving up and moving on to a better quality truggy. I still have mine, have had alot of issues but my hf still rocks.
If i had the choice again i probably would choose differently.

Hi, Buzz01.

Your HF look's impressive, i'm very interested regard the bumber you install. May i know where you get it from, or from which RC off-road.
I'm having a HF too, i like it a lot. As different people have different type of view regard the RC, but i just like it. I intend to improve it make it more better.

Thank you.

RE: Official HPI Hellfire Thread

Thanks Kyo,

The bumper is a home made soft red plastic/lexan, no carbon here, to hard.

I like to do thinks differently, and i don't like the original bumper .

The upper deck is also home made and in two, for easy maintenance !!

Now i am making some 2.5mm carbon disk brakes.
The next thing is some custom made carbon side gards.

Never bore with the HF!! :)

I you want, i can sent a PDF drawing from the front and rear bumper, just let me know.

Hi Buzz01.
Thank, appreciate your offer. Yes i'm glad to have a copy.
Around my area, there some truggy player. Some having hobao, Kyosho inf st, cxt etc... only two of us having the HF.
I believe all truggy are good, and everyone of them have their good and bad point.
Nothing is 100 percent out off box, if not they will not be able to sell their hop-up to earn a little bit more cash out of the owner.
Even with some of the hop-up, it doesn't give 100 percent too, or even a 80. So, why so many (people) complain.
Basically, i'm very simple.(No offence) If scare of damage or spending $$$ and time, don't play or buy fix-up put on the shelt for sometime till bore~ sell.
I'm not a racer, i'm just a basher. Any reasonable place which will give me and my truggy fun, i go and bash. End of the fun, fixing, maintain, cleaning and think how to improve skill and truggy.

Thank again Buzz01.

RE: Official HPI Hellfire Thread

Buzz, I love the way your HF turned out. What aluminum steering components did you use (from what manufacturer)?

I bought a used one w/Ofna Picco .21 and an RB pipe. Turns out I got screwed on the engine. I have since spent ~$350 on an Axial .32, JP-1 pipe, brakes F/R, wide wheel hexes, Kyosho wheels, Badlands, etc.

So I paid $250 for the HF and ~$350 in parts. So $600 total and the steering is SOOOO sloppy. Oh, and I have another $50 worth of steering parts, arms, bearing, etc. coming from EBAY any day now. I hope this takes care of the slop in the steering system.

I am tempted to sell it, but I want to install all the steering components first. That will be the last straw I guess.

Thanks,
Joe

RE: Official HPI Hellfire Thread

Hi Joe,

Nice to hear that you like the HF.

To get rid off any slop in the steering section first you have to do:

- Important!! CA between the rod end (86144) and the bal (85230), keep moving until the CA is dry! (also all other bal/rod end on the HF)
- Very Important!! There is a lot of slop on the steering Bushing (86508) and the steering arm 85507 2/4, fill that up!!!! (tighten the screw alone wil not do the job) The steering plate 87531 itself is OK
- tighten the servo saver nut (i use a high Torque Digital Servo: DS1015 from Ace r/c)
- Shim's between Front Spindle Carrier 85506 and M4 Head Screw
- Shim's behind Hex Hub Adapter 86387

This wil take most of the slop away!!

Al alu parts are from GP racing see http://www.ghhobby.com/products.php?cat=1 50% off !!!!

By the way: Don't sel, every car has some flaw !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just enjoy the ride !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm having trouble with my front diff, when I am running at a decent speed and hit the brakes, my diff makes a clicking noise. I opened it up and there is some metal dust particles and the 10T gear shows lots of wear. I want to upgrade the ring and pinion to the Hot Bodies Stadium Pro parts, but I have a question. Can someone just confirm that these are the two parts I need:

Buzz,
When you say to fill up the steering bushing and arm, do you mean with CA? Can you please elaborate?

Thanks,
Joe

THanks. I checked last night and found only 1. It was only $1 or $2 cheaper than Tower. I'd rather order both F/R ring and pinions from Tower to avoid the typical EBay bull. The extra $5-10 is worth it to me.

Thanks again!!!!

RE: Official HPI Hellfire Thread

Hey Guys,

Can anyone help with a race setup for a HF RTR on clay track. (e.g. diff/shock oils, springs, tiers, and any other settings I should look at )
This is the track[image]http://www.rctech.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=322692&d=1206251774[/img]
I''m new to RC and need some help. When I have had practice it under steers into and around corners then oversteers out fishtailing when accelerating. I have upgraded the the radio to an Airtronics MX-3 FHSS, fitted a HF rear wing, changed the shock oil to 50wt front and rear with the 1.6mm tappered piston holes, and have on order 2 Hitec seros (HS-5955TG steering, HSC-5998TG throttle/brake) everything else is stock and in the stock positions. I have been told to try 15000wt front, 20000wt centre, and 10000wt rear diff oils and Proline Crime Fighter tiers. Is this heading in the right direction?

Thanks for your help.
Mark.

Not sure on those diff oil weights you have been told. I run 5/7/3 or 5/10/5. The HF is a bit of a pig to get the right setup. Check out truggyracers.com, there are set up sheets for the HF and heaps of other info.

RE: Official HPI Hellfire Thread

hey folks! OK so I just finished reading through the whole thread! Seriously! It took a few days but I managed to do it. I''ve been looking for any and all ideas to improve steering.

If you recognize me you''ll know that I posted all the pics of places where you can grind clearence to gain more overall stearing. I have real good radius and all that but I''m still fighting the slop! I have to set my endpoint adjustments way past the point of straining the servo to get the wheels to hold a nice tight turn. I am on my third fUTABA 3305 and it''s starting to get annoying. If I adjust the endpoints so as to preserve the servo I lose about half of my turning radius. One of the worst places I can see is the servo saver. The whole thing actually pivots a little allowing for the whole steering assembly to slop back and forth. I think this is where a lot of the problem is. I don''t think tightening the servo saver will help because as I said the whole thing wiggles back and forth between the chassis and the upper deck. I will tear her down this weekend to try some of the ideas other guys have had that I have read about but I was wondering if anyone had noticed this allready and figured out a way to fix it? I am thinking maybe a shim under the saver so that when tightened up it will snug the servo saver down against the chassis?

Anyhow, I still really like my SS. I can take it to the track, and I may not be as nimble or light as the other truggys, but none of them can take the abuse that my Hellfire can take! "To finish first... first you must finish"!!!!! I am soon to have my own track in my back yard! It will be small but I can''t wait cause I''ll be able to make setup adjustments and know immediately how they effect handling and all that stuff. You can''t reallly do that just bashing around and the tracks around here are to far away just to go hang out at and mess with setup. It''s gonna be too kewl! Post u guys later!

RE: Official HPI Hellfire Thread

Ive tightened the servo saver to the max. Worked good for a while but now has the movement you talk about. I tried shimming, didnt work for me but i didnt have the correct shims. Ive noticed the inside section of the servo saver under the top tray has worn badly.

joeyvaz 04-16-2008 07:23 AM

RE: Official HPI Hellfire Thread

I too have just torn down the front end trying to reduce the slop. My biggest problem is where the servo saver meets the upper deck, just like you-j-boy. I put a washer between the top deck and servo saver-not much difference. I tightened the servo saver purple screw as tight as I could-nothing. I still haven''t found a way to remove the rediculous amount of slop this Trug comes with right out of the box. An email to HPI has yielded no help.

I am actually contemplating selling the Hellfire and puting the founds toward an Eight T or something in the level of Truggy.

Good luck,
Joe
