"someone please measure and post the pivot point to axle distance on the standard Sierra gear? The larger size with the functional downlink. "
12inches is what I measure on my gear. I belive the holman/sist gear are the same, as this is what I have, not the d9.

Ticketec, are you still visiting this thread?
I have a question for you, didnt you test the XYZ 53 cc twin?
Here it is, in a Sist D9;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29a9azO-l-Q&feature=plcp
Now, I get 6500 rpm with a Menz 19x10
The plane weights 10 kg
What do you think? Will that do it? Will it fly?
What max rpm do you get, at which propeller? Do you remember?
There is some resistance when I move the propeller, almost like the bearings are too tight.
I cannot hand-start it, must use a starter.
Ta 152 says I should try a 18x8 ....

RE: ESM FW D-9
At 6500 rpms with a 10 pitch, your not going to be flying any faster then 62mph. You might try an 18x12. Even at 6000rpms, you'd get 69mph with a 12 pitch. With an 8 pitch, even at 8000rpms, youd only get 60mph

Yeah still here! Just been busy plaing with EDF and turbines lately but still keep an eye here
Yes I am running the XYZ 53cc twin and I am using a 22x10 prop. I was using a "TBM" branded prop but that has since been damaged and I replaced it with a cheap carbon fibre 22x10 prop which is ok, but not as good as the wooden one I had on it. I am going to replace it with an Xoar prop on it next so see if that provides a little bit better performance.
As for RPM, I am getting about 5600 with the 22x10 "TBM" prop and my dora weights in at about 11.5kg. The aircraft flew fine with good speed, It sometimes feels a little short in the vertical, but as the engine bed's in further this will improve and better and better. It has already improved a lot from when I first flew her. I also tried 22x8 prop but did not like it, the 10 in pitch was fine, Remember it's a warbird not a pylon racer!!
As for not being able to hand crank it???? there is something wrong there for sure![X(][X(] This must be why there seems to be quite a difference in RPM figures for your engine to mine. I have only ever hand started mine and have no need for an electric starter. It is just as loose as any other gasser engine once I have the fuel up to it, so I would be looking into what is causing that to start with. you also had some issue with a piston or ring didn't you?
Thanks
dave

RE: ESM FW D-9
Okay. thanks Ticketec. I think the handstarting and max rpm is due to the RcExl ignition.
I ruined it by using Life battery directly on it, and now I have a brand new ignition, which doesnt want to
ignite the fuel from handstarting. So damn irritating.
And the tightness of the axle...I can feel its uneven when I turn it. I fear the bearing has corroded
since I left it outside a few nights....must open it up and check, I'm afraid.[:'(]

Ticketec, 22x10 at 5600 rpm means we have exactly the same numbers.
Here is a video of the test flight; As you can see I need more power at takeoff.
19x10 at 6500 rpm barely made it, and it is too slow in flight.
I might have to abandon this engine, but there are no alternatives regarding gas twins
strong enough, and that will fit inside the cowling. Too good to be true....

RE: ESM FW D-9
Mine has RcExcl already. It is the second set now. Maybe the reason the first one stopped working was that
I used Life directly. So now I have the second one, using a regulator.
Impossible to start by hand now.
I bought two ignitions from OctopusRC. One of them didnt work at all. No joy. The second one was used in the test flight.
Had to rev it up to about 1000 rpm with the starter for, say, 10 seconds. After that it is running fine.
I am now waiting for "original" Saito/Rcexcel ignition for the FG-57; It wont start anymore either.
(Using RcExl from octopus RC on the FG-57 now also, it lasted for 15 flights)
I wonder how so many can sell RcExcl twin ignition at e.g 75$ (Octopus), while advantage hobby sells RcExl for 222$ ?

http://store.octopusrc.com/index.php...t_detail&p=122
Is there a quality difference, I wonder? Both are RcExcl twin ignitions.

RE: ESM FW D-9
Be sure voltage is below 6.0v, 4.8v is safer setting = very true as most 6 volt systems charge at up to 8 volts i have always run mine on 4.5 never had a issue with ignition lipos with a regulator are accidents waiting to happen i once plugged a 3 cell in to my 2 cell jet cat p80 end result was a $540 hole in the pocket as smoke came from the on board ECU[:@] as for rpm on the D9 i run the same set up as Ticketec never had a issue with flight mines had over 40 on it so far my tank is slightly higher to help gas to the carby hand starts every time when wet sounds like something is not right in the bearing dept if the motor is that tight kwik PS i watched your flight seemed all right it is a war bird it appeared to me to be ok in speed (in flight) but will say the takeoff was long just my 2 cents worth woops the US dollars has come back up make that my 1 cents worth

Kwik,
Seeing that both our Fw's are of roughly the same size and weight, they should fly fairly similar with the same amount of power. I would suggest that you try the 22x10 prop. you flight looked a little like the first time I tried the 22x8 prop, I landed after about 4-5 circuits as well. Have you seen the video's of mine flying that I have posted so that you have something to compare it with?
I'm hoping to get out with the dora this weekend and will tach the engine again to give you it's current figures with the crappy carbon 22x10 prop.
I have been very lucky that my XYZ has worked perfectly so far since it came out of the box. still using the original ignition, the only change made was I am running iridium spark plugs and I run high octane fuel as well.
Another option that has just come out, but i'm not sure on it's dimensions is the DLE that have released, a new twin DLE-60
http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items...WINENGINE.html
I would seriously think about trying the 22x10 before you take the XYZ out and see how that performs.
Thanks

RE: ESM FW D-9
But Dave, going from 19x10 to 22x10 ? Then rpm will drop from 6500 to 5600...meaning speed in the air will drop ?
And hp drops too....can you tell me your thoughts behind this? Is it something you experienced?
That the performance was better with 22x10 than with 19x10 ?

RE: ESM FW D-9
Ok finally some updated progress on mine. She is getting close to being finished. A lot of small things left to do, but should be ready to maiden next weekend hopefully. I may not have the cockpit done by then, but as long as everything else is good to go, I'll take ehr out to test.
ESM fw-190D9
Motor: Rimfire 65cc electric
Prop: 21x14 2 blade currently. Also have a 20x14 3 blade....additonally have a 23x12 2blade in the mail.
Esc: CC 160 HV version 2
Batts: two times 6s 6000 in series for 12s 6000.....have two 6s 8000's in the mail for longer flights provided the maiden goes ok.
Retracts: Sierra 1/5th scale 190 gear plus retractable tail wheel
Spinner: SDShobbies for the 2 blade. gene barton for the 3 blade
Paint...base coats of light german gray with yellow rudder. The rest...ie the green/gray on the fuse/horizontal stabs were airbrushed on by Vertical grimace. Many thanks to him for his help.
The top of the wings are untouched. I took the wing to Home Depot and had them color match the green and the grey and they both came out perfect first time from the mixer
I will be adding additonal marking, unit bands, etc
But heres some nice pics. Also...instead of the screws for the internal cowl attachments as shown in the manual...I installed 4-40 blind nuts
The two tail wheel pics....the one shows the unit fully retracted and the other extended. Once the cover plate is installed, the tail wheel will be mostly within the fuse when up.
I will also be setting up a separate air tank/valve for the tail wheel just in case so if it leaks over time, I 'll still be able to get the mains down. OR.....I may just get a tamjets failsafe device like the jet jockies use so ifn the pressure fails below a certain level, the unit auto activates the valve to drop the gear.
