I've seen Robart 605 and 606 retracts used in the TF kit with the trunnion reversed so that it retracts outwards. Does anyone know if the spring air retracts 116/85°, can be made to do the same? If so, any instructions as too how to accomplish this would be extremely helpful.

You might really like the Hobby King electric retracts matched to the Top Flite 5mm struts from their P-47 or P-51 60 size ARFs. I use them in several planes and they have worked flawlessly. Price is about $8 each for the gear, and $10 for the struts. They work off the flight battery. If your plane is larger, go to the HK web page. They have four pages of electric retracts, many with struts included. Spitfire #59.

My Spit is on the Model Airplane News web page. Search "Tony Iannucelli". I use them on a scale helicopter, an H9 Spitfire, a Dirty Birdy, and others.

Tony,

Do you remember the stock numbers for both the retracts and the struts?

I bought a set of HK electric for my TF Spitfire. There needs to be quite a lot of modification done to use HK gear. I was too far along so went back to Robarts. It can be done with proper up front planning. The HK gear work great.

HKD514 is the one I used X 2. I also used Robart struts, but went back to the spats as the plane didn't need the extra weight. My Spit currently flying with these is the H9 65". My article on MAN gives a lot of details. Also, go on HK, look at accessories in the list of products, click on retracts, and ALL their products are listed.

Tony, thanks a lot for the HK model number, I remember reading your MAN article.
Steve, thanks for the advice on getting the HK retracts before building the wing, so as to facilitate modification.

Hello
We would like to present our Supermarine Spitfire mk9 project.

This project is a joint building of Avi Sirota and Dani Golan from Israel.
The project is based on a Composite ARF kit. Although it's an ARF kit, we decided to build the model including many hand made scale details Such as 100% scale cockpit, flaps, exhausts, tail landing gear and more

The aircraft is painted wearing a British scheme from World War II with the GZ-? (MJ 730) identification mark
The model is powered by a DA 85 equiped with a SLIMLINE exhaust
here is the build thread:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rc-w...osite-arf.html

Every year we organize a large scale RC airplane event called Stav Golan`s Air Show.
This year, as part of the event, we recreated an attack on an ammunition train performed by a Spitfire MK9 After the invasion of Europe.
The pilot, Max M. a Royal Air Force veteran, who carried out the original attack was sitting with us in the audience.
Our Spitfire performed the "attack." flown by avi Sirota
The train also was build by us
Attached is the Video

Hi Dany,
I just had a look at your build thread.
What an intricate/detailed build. Lot's of time, effort and skill invested in your project.
The result....absolutely stunning.
Flies and looks great in the air.

Thanks for sharing your masterpiece and the inspiration for the hobby.

Andreas
Happy building & flying.

Hi guys. I've been flying large scale warbirds for over a year now and decided to get respectable. I just bought a Clark Industries MkIX. I anxiously wait while crating and shipping happen. I need your help. I can only find very brief references to the Clark Spit in passing. Not a lot of detail about the plane, flight characteristics, etc.

any guidance would be greatly appreciated. This is really a departure for me as I normally only have axis aircraft but that's why I said "respectable".

This is plane is already built but had been rarely flown. I've seen discussions that say the Clark Merlin was under powered but after chatting briefly with John Clark today he explains that it was never meant for anything but scale. His quote "a Spitfire isn't supposed to be able to hover on the prop!". Although I would never argue with a man with his pedigree I worry I won't have enough motor punch to get me outta trouble.

I hope you"ll accept me into your ranks.

I posted these in my One Eighth Air Force event thread but thought I would repost them here for all the Spitfire afficianados. This is good friend and fellow OEAF member Kevin Hopwood's 1/6 scale Mick Reeves Spitfire. It looks every bit as good in person as it does in these pics and appears to fly great too. This thing has more detail than most 1/5 and 1/4 scale Spitfires I've seen. Kevin won third place people's choice at our OEAF fly-in this past weekend as well.

I'm sure you know this, but the "punch" you need to stay out of trouble with a warbird is in the form of "energy".

Here is a good discussion of how the big boys do it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_fighter_maneuvers
"In aviation, the term "energy" does not refer to the fuel nor the thrust it produces. Instead, thrust is referred to as "power." Energy is the state of the fighter's mass at any given time, and is the result of the power. Energy comes in two forms, which are kinetic and potential. Kinetic energy is a function of the fighter's mass and speed, while potential energy is a function of its mass, gravity and altitude. The combined potential and kinetic energy is called the total energy, or "energy package." Because the energy package is the combination of mass, speed and altitude, a fighter flying at low altitude but a high speed may have the same total energy as a fighter of equal mass, but flying at a low speed and high altitude."

While I can digest the concept of kinetic vs potential energy I'm having a tough time relating that to the fact that I've relied, sometimes heavily, on lots of thrust generated by the engine/prop when I begin to stall (energy package "failure"?). This nearly always happens only during take offs, landings, and the occasional mis-calculation in large inside loops.

A dear friend of mine and Master Builder, Wayne Spani, actually owned a real MkIX and flew it often ( I love the stories! ). He explains that it was a serious bit of work to re-trim from cruising flight to combat settings (boost, trim, prop, fuel mix, etc.) but then the Merlin would push him into the seat as if he'd become extremely heavy.

With my other warbirds, I don't have that requirement. Since I can over-provision my other airframes with enough motor I won't be able to do that as the Spit I'm getting has John Clark's Merlin II 108cc twin with scale exhaust. With that idea in mind I hope that I'll be able to go to WOT in a panic and have the engine pull hard enough where I can right-thumb my way to level flight...

thanks.. I love the science/physics you bring up! I just wonder if I'll be able to be that calm, cool, and thoughtful while buzzing around a few mortgage payments in the pattern.

The only saving grace for me is that mortgage payments are a thing of the past! I paid off the house over a year ago. For some reason I seem to have lots more airplanes now.

The essential thing is Angle of Attack control. No matter how much power you have the wing will stall when it reaches it's critical AoA...but if you have enough power you can drag a plane through the air even with a stalled wing. Lacking such power, you must always be very aware of how close to the critical AoA you are. The best book ever written about how airplanes really fly is "Stick and Rudder" by Wolfgang Langwiesche. http://www.amazon.com/Stick-Rudder-E.../dp/0070362408
