A rude awakening this morning. The electric retracts are not going to work. Once the hole is cut out for the motor (where the air cylinder typically is located) and the slot for the strut there would be nothing left of the outer rib that the retract mounts to. That would a wing failure in the making. So,,,,, have to take a step back and order the Robart gear. The Robart cylinder can be set up so that the cylinder can be moved 180 degrees there fore not weakening the wing structure. I have studied changing the electric retract in the same manner but it doesn't appear possilbe. You fella's that have built the Top Flite Spitfire, if am missing something, please clue me in.

I'm surprised they wouldn't work. I used the same retracts in my Kyosho Spit and they pretty much dropped right in.

You can see how they work in this video: http://youtu.be/B0uR9yJv6gI

Hey Fella's. Caps are going to be $20 each shipped if i can fit them into a Small Flat Rate box. $14 for the cap, $6 for shipping. If you want more than one, we can adjust the price for the shipping accordingly. Outside the lower 48 will be actual shipping cost. Not doing this to make a profit, just need to cover the cost.
Once the order is placed it will take one to two weeks before they arrive. Then we will ship to you asap.
Are all of you ok with that?
Steve;
I am okay with the price and shipping. Just send me a Pay Pal invoice and I will pay you.
Thank you for doing this for the brotherhood!!

Thanks on the caps fella's. Next thing to do is come up with the correct number to order.
Radfordc, i will post a picture of the hole i added to the wing rib just to slide the body of the retract into. I think the main thing is the design of the wing is different.

Here are some pictures of both the HK retract and the Robarts. With the HK in place and having to remove the material for the strut you can see that rib 5 does not have a lot holding it together, just a thin portion at the top. One thing i did discover on the Robart gear is they are very tight in the housing. When taking them apart to reverse the cylinder i added Labelle 106 Teflon grease. That smoothed the action considerably and the "tight" feeling was greatly reduced. Labelle 106 is formulated for plastic so any of you out there using these plastic Robart gear may want to consider that.

Steve;
I am like you and think that will be to much wood to be remove to install the HK retracts. I always try to come up with a way to make the landing gear mounts stronger. The Robart was a little tight fitting in the mount, but the hole in the rib was just the right spot for the retract cylinder on the gears!! It is too bad the HK cylinder is not like the one on the Robart gear. They look like they will work, but for me that is to much wood to remove to mount them.
A question to the Brotherhood!!
A was down at Home Deport in their paint department, looking for colors to paint my Top Flite Spirtfire and was wondering if any have painted a model RC planes with the paints that they sell?? My local hobby shop do not stock paints for airplane, but they do stock paints for cars!!
Any info will be a big help!!!
Thanks, brothers!!!

Welcome to the Brotherhood nirtza79, i am sure #1 will get you signed up soon.
Thanks for the input Sonny. I have been epoxying in the landing gear rails today and patching the hole that was ground in for the HK gear. If you are going to use gasoline, (i cannot recall right off what engine you are using) then the latex from Home Depot will work. I finished a 50% Smith Miniplane last year with Behr exterior latex. It worked ok. I think i will try Klass Kote on this Spitfire. If you are using a glow engine, then the latex paint is not a good idea unless you can come up with a fuel proof clear coat. I have tested several clear coats over latex and am yet to find something that i really like.

Thanks for the info!! Yes I am going with a Magnum XL 91FS Blue Head four stroke engine. I will look on the net to find more info on the Klass Kote paints. Like I post before, I do miss the old hobby shop!!! You could walk in and find everything you need to paint a model plane!!!

Sonny-
On this link go down to "Articles" and there are two "Parts" on painting with latex house paint.
http://www.vaillyaviation.com/Intro.html

I painted both of these planes with HD exterior latex house paint.

Ok Steve, I ran into a similar issue years ago on a sea fury. What I would do, is in the last photo you posted, where you can see the trailing side of the retract, I would add a shear web across from rib to rib just before the doublers on each rib end. I believe this will add enough strength after the wing is sheeted to make up for the amount of the rib you cut out. Now, Im all for overbuilding, so here is the extra step I would also take On both sides of that thin piece of rib left, I would glue in with slow epoxy a section of carbon fiber tow. This will greatly increase the strength of that thin piece of rib. It would not break there even if it was in a crash [:-] Then, I would go one extra step LOL. I would glass that whole inside area with 2 0z cloth to tie it all together. ( would be the inside area of the sheeting out to both ribs and shear web to spar) That's how I would do it.

If you decide that's how you would do it, I can send you the material to do that with. No charge. I gots plenty of 2 oz cloth and cf tow.

Just let me know.

tevans55;
Thanks for the link!!! Lots of good info. Very nice painting job done on the two planes!!! I will still have to go by Lowes and talk to their paint department. On their TV adds they say they can match any color you bring in!!! I will down load a picture of a Spitfire that has the colors that I want to do my plane after and see if they can do that!!!
Thanks again for the link and the info!!!

Sonny,

I just painted a plane with the Exterior Latex paint from Lowes. (I chose flat colors)

It was my first experience with it, but I really like it.

I ironed the monokote colors I was going to be using to 2 pieces of balsa about 4 inch square. They matched to colors about as close as I have ever seen with other enamel paints.

It sprays great and dries faster than you would think. I also like the water clean-up and no fume environment.

1. Use Exterior paint

2. Mix in one pint cans

3. Use the cheap Auto Zone or Wal-Mart brand blue windshield washer fluid to thin it with at 25% thinner. The alcohol helps in the drying process and the light soap helps it flow out on the surface.

4. Add one spoon full of flotrol to assist in spraying and flowing.

5. Adjust gun for a light tack coat first, then heaver on the second coat. (If it gets a run, no problem, just wipe it with a damp lint free cloth and recoat. It will fill and flow nicely.)

6. I used a heat lamp from a distance to speed up the drying times, and it flattens out nicely.

7. I use a HVLP touch up gun at 30 - 40 PSI at the gun. But use whatever pressures work for you and your gun.

8. The clean up was the best, just water. In the past I spent as much for thinner for cleaning as I spent on everything for the paint job. Now I can afford to hose out my gun between each coat and color to reuse the risk of clogs. I was also able to spray it with my air brush with some additional cleaning. (Next time I plan to thin my material at 50% for the air brush.

Check out the P-40:

Sonny,

oldscaleguy is correct. Glow fuel and house paints do not blend well.

I will take some flat clear Monokote spray and test some on the paint I have and report back to you soon.

Use satin finish Rustoleum to seal it all up with. You can get it in quart cans at Lowes.

Let it cure for at least a week. Then it will be as close to fuel proof as any of the others.

#1;
Thanks for the info. I know that the paints that Lowe's and Home Deport sell do stand up to the weather, but, like you said, they will not stand up to the fuel we are using. I was in my local hobby shop yesterday and I was talking to the owner and I ask why he don't stock airplane paints supplies?? The answer was there is not a high demand for airplane paint, not like back in the days. I look at him and said, there are people who still like to build and paint their model. But the bottom line is to make money and you don't want to stock things that don't sell fast!! He also said that in the 5 years that he open the shop, he told me you can count on one hand the number of people coming in to buy paint, but covering he can not keep in-stock!!!
Thanks, again for the info and I will wait for the info on your test!!!

One of the best paint sealers is Klass Kote epoxy. Get their Clear part A and part B also the flatner that they sell. You can then mix the degree
of sheen you want using their flatner. Anything from satin to dead flat,a little of this stuff goes a long way. If you mist it on on two or three coats, letting it dry between coats, it will stand up to 25% nitro with no problem. The key is to mist it on, as putting it on heavy will cause a reaction with almostall other types of paint. It also protects decals very well.

Klass Kote is essentially thesame stuff as the old K &B Superpoxy.

Cheers,

Hi all, I know, that you deal some other topic, but I have one question. Which one Spitfire Mk IX looks better? With the round or spiky rudder?
I would like to start new priject- BT Spitfire Mk VIII/ IX 83" wingspan. I can´t decide which one I should choose. Round or spiky rudder Mk IX? And some good paint scheme?
Thank for your opinions, you can wrtite here or send me a PM.

Flew the Kyosho Spit this morning and everything went very well. The RCG 20 runs good and has more power than needed. The electric HK retracts worked well. Plane flew nice and smooth...it does drop the left wing when stalled. Landing was slow and smooth.

I have to ask...why do you care what I think? What do you consider to be the best looking? I like redheads...you like blonds!

Default RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)

Prekin,

I have the same kit, It's a beautiful kit for sure! I personally like the "spiky" tail, as you call it. One thing to keep in mind is that the "spiky" tail version had a retractable tailwheel where the round tail version had a fixed tailwheel. That is the MkVIII(spiky vs. MkIX Round)

As far as paint schemes go, I prefer the desert schemes myself.

I know, what are you mean. I like both of them, but maybe you know about some good paint scheme for the Mk IX with the spiky or round rudder. So maybe the paint scheme decides which one I would choose.

By the way I like brunette.

Casey, you are right, Mk VIII has retractable tailwheel, but there are some Mk IX with the "spiky" (what is the right calling?) rudder without it. Here are some pictures.

Personal preference is round rudder and a paint scheme with invasion stripes. Invasion stripes are good for old eyes..... [8D]
