RE: Hangar 9 Mustang 150
Alan i am also just like you. I only have one glow left.
What is your mustang weight. I am shooting for 16 pounds. Will weight tonight when i get the spinner and prop on. If it does come in close to that this plane will be a floater. I have an esm corsair that has a 74" wing that came in at 19 pounds. Flys heavy but good.

I have not flow the Funtana with the DLE yet, but I am sure it is going to be fun. I am using the OEM retracts, but I have modified them to be a bit softer. I disassembled them and cleaned out all of the old lube and then polished the strut so it would move better. I also removed approx. 3/8 " from each spring to soften the action. We will see how it works out. I think 16# is a good number to shoot for. I will let you know what it weighs once I get a bit further along with it. What size of prop are you planning on using? I have mine set up with a Classic Master Airscrew 18x12. I am guessing around 80-83 mph. Also, do you think a 16 ounce fuel tank is enough?

RE: Hangar 9 Mustang 150
I am not using the stock retracts because i did not want to buy 2 retract servos. And i had the othe retracts already. I felt the stock ones were to stiff also and still have them if needed. 16 ozs for the tank will be plenty. I have a 16oz fourtitude tank in mine and i use the same tank in my other two dle30 powered planes. 10minutes flights leave half the fuel in the tank. I am using hobbyking lifes on ignition and receiver so s little wieght saved there. I will be using a xoar 19x10 or 20x8.

I already had the retract servos, so that wasn't an issue for me. I am using Li-Fe batteries also. 1 for the RX and 1 for the retracts and ignition. Should save an ounce or 3.
I hope the 18x12 doesn't spin up too high. I am hoping for 8k or just above.

RE: Hangar 9 Mustang 150
A question for you guys that have finished their planes? I have mine ready for batteries and can balance it with the just putting the batteries up in the nose. My question is this, I took it out today to get a rough weight because it feels light. Without just the batteries mine came it at 14 pounds 10 Ozs. I am going to use HK lifes for receiver and ignition so not a lot of extra weight. Is that normal for a plane this big to be this light? I have hitec 5625s all the way around and a dle 35 for power. I used the stock retracts but depending on how it flys will be getting some sierras or robarts. Have you guys that have finished theirs weighted it and what did y'all's come in at?

skillet92,
I know you may only consider this a partially valid review since I work for Horizon, but I got one of these last year for my own enjoyment, and I really love the airplane. I used an engine that's on the heavy size and my airplane weighs 16.5 lb. The closest comparison I can make for handling qualities is that it flies like a ParkZone airplane, meaning very light, very stable and predictable. With the flaps all the way down she slows down so nicely for landing with no fear of tip stalling whatsoever. Just drive her on down and relax the elevator when the mains touch for a pretty wheel landing. I can't wait for the weather to get better so I can get her back out to the field.
I changed the trim scheme on mine to Glamorous Glen III, but I don't have all the decals on yet.

The 33GX itself fits right into the P-51 with no mods - the crankcase width is the same as the 26GX the Mustang was designed around, however the stock muffler we've included will likely require some mods to the firewall to make room for the muffler.

The DLE35RA fits inside the cowl very well.
The only modification/cutting I see will be for the spark plug boot. I may use a B&B muffler because it has a smaller profile. They aren't available yet but could be real soon.
I want to modify the exhaust tubes so they are at the same angle as the exit behind the cowl.

Fantastic model, none of you will be disappointed! I got one of the last of the old ones and I have the Saito 180 and dBalsa cockpit
If you're listening Hanger9, drop the overpriced P47 bubbletop and bring back the razorback at a decent cost

I do wish they still had the razorback. Lovely airplane.

This is a franken hanger 9 P-51. The fuse is form the 77 inch version and the wing is from the 80 inch version. My friend has the 80 inch and the fuse is mostly identical. I red did some of the markings but left the yellow tail for visibility. It really helps on those overcast days.
The engine is one of those HK China 26 cc gassers. It provides modest power but nothing outstanding other than it was inexpensive and of course the gas is cheaper than glow. I am at about 4200 ft asl. My brother used his ipad doppler thingie and got me at about 57 mph straight and level. I use a lot of runway to take off but that adds to the scale like flying I prefer. Nice slow landings and great ground handling unlike my other fav the 109.

Hey WD and Skillet,
Im glad I found this thread and your posts, I ordered a DLE35 a few weeks back for just the same purpose. Did you guys take yours up yet? I pulled the Saito 220 from mine to use in another project and was hoping this new 35RA would cut it. When I learned about this motor the mustang was the first thing that popped in my mind. Its just on a shelf here and I haven't started yet but among other things was wondering what prop should it be for this one? 18x10 or 19x10 What do you guys think? I read your mention of a different Bennet muffler. is this to address flow to the cowl exits? I figure the rear muffler setup is nice for fit but also seems as though it may block exit cooling flow to the rear somewhat.
Thanks.

RE: Hangar 9 Mustang 150
Tisoy I have not flown mine but I have ran the engine a couple of times to check out things. Engine runs great. I am starting with an xoar 20x8 prop. Plane weights 14 pounds 14 ozs. With a digital fish scale I am getting over 19 pounds of thrust. Will be a rocket. I am not sure about the stock retracts. I have robart 1/2 inch p51 style struts I would just need to buy some 630 robarts or I need to buy to retract servos. Not sure which route to go.
I am using the stock muffler as it fits well. My engine can be completely enclosed if I wanted it to be. I have cut out just to over the plug. That way I can force air through the fins and out .

Skillet, Whistling Death,
Thats sounding good to me. Can I ask, as far as the standoffs go with the 35 mounted up on the firewall, Do all four contact the firewall without chopping into the sides or will I have to do that in order to get everything centered? I really think I can get a better throttle arm positioning now from the looks of things, Im puttin a tbm throttle arm on the carb to get the throttle pushrod off to the side even more. This was an issue for me when the saito was in there as the carb arm on those saitos are almost center of the rear of the motor. The tank position centered right behind the firewall prevented a straight shot for the throttle servo and arm setup leaving me to use a wide Z bend and less than perfect low idle control. If you feel confident with the 20x8 then this sounds promising as im wondering how a 19x10 or even an 18x12 would let this motor wind up. I'd like to turn this lil friend into a screamer hehe. BTW Whistling Death, that is right. The replacement parts for this bird is outrageous now. I had to rebuild a left wing on this mustang after the 5th flight and thought about replacing it with a new wingset altogether but the price around 330ish is too much just for a new wing set. It is way more than half the price I paid for the entire kit when it came out! LOL

Hey all,
I never really thought about this till now, but what scale would this be?....I'm trying to get a call sign decal cut for the nose of mine, the overall length of the full scale aircraft comes in at 32.25'...when I scale to 1/5, it comes in too big, when I scale to 1/6, it comes in a wee bit short.....any ideas on what the exact scale is on this bird?
Thanks in advance

Gonna be using a DLE 35 for mine, you really don't want to go much bigger than that because of the weight....just a thought :-)
Just wondering if anyone has taken a close look at the re-released version (current) of the Hangar 9 P-51D 150. I was thinking about a G-38 for power but from the manual, it looks like it might be a tight fit. Anyone have any experience with this or a similar set up?
Thanks,
Tony

Hey Skillet92 and others who've used the DLE 35RA... I used to have a Saito 220 in this but switched to the DLE 35RA and I'm having issues keeping the engine cool. My setup looks identical to yours Skillet. I'm using JR equipment with telemetry and have the thermocouple at the top fin behind the engine and the engine will get up into the mid-350's pretty quick on the ground. I've tweaked the needles to run just a bit rich but to no avail. I think the big stock muffler behind the head mayt be causing me issues with airflow around the fins so I've ordered a Bennett muffler which is smaller. The only other thing I can think to do is try some baffling to try to direct the air over the fins more.
I'm just curious if anyone else is having any heat issues with the DLE 35RA in this P-51 with the stock muffler.
Thanks!!
Dave

Opening up the chin scoop dropped my head temp by 100 degrees. It dosent take much.
Bikerboy. I used the plastic guns to locate, then used a brad point drill in REVERSE just enough to get a flat spot to epoxy the aluminum guns in.
