Road trips: 2022
April 1,2: Toledo show.
Miles: 180
Went on a Friday.
The area was 'broken' into 3 sections that were divided by curtains.
Two were 'stuff for sale'.
Section 1:
Section 2.
Section 3 for 'flying'.
Saw 'old' friends.
Nice 'all wood' boat.
Some 'old stuff' from the 40's.
First time I've seen a cylinder parallel to the prop shaft.
Smaller version with 'cut away' showing 'innards'.
AMA had their trailer there.
Happy with his new Byron purchase.
These needed a bike pump to start them and were extremely loud but cool!

Brings back a few memories. My oldest brother got me started with planes.
Two Ziroli P-61's with gear for one for $1500.
Never could get those wood kits with 'rubber band' drives to fly!
A couple of the 'larger' dealers were there.
Just the engine was 34 grand! Makes my old Moki's seem cheap !
Talked to John and Carl for about 40 minutes and bought some NASA tickets.
Americana.

Finally getting warm so did some PM on my planes.
TF P-47.
Nice when engine starts up after a few flips on choke/no choke after 'sitting' all winter.
Last week, charged up all the batteries. I find it best to 'double charge' them as, sometimes they don't fully charge the 'first time'.
As usual for all large planes, receiver gets 2 battery packs.
All servos and 'arms' secured.
All moving surfaces tight as well as linkages.
With a wooden prop, the prop nuts needed about a 1/4 turn, getting compressed over the winter.

Prop nut was tight on the CF prop plus there are 2 studs in the hub to keep the prop from 'spinning'.

It, finally, got warm last week here in the Cincinnati, Ohio (southwest part of state) so we got some flying in at one of my local clubs.
They installed an extension of the 'geotech' for the electric planes for a total of 200'.
I pre-PM'ed the Ziroli SBD and got in 3 flights.
We have about 1000' of grass runway.
Doug and I get in a lot of formation flying.

Ziroli F4U Corsair PM that I bought last Fall.
Inserted a 32 oz fuel tank with rubber bands (were hooks already in the fuse) and a large air tank with caulk.
Removed a piece of ply and found a 4.8 v 2700 for powering the receiver (Somebody was brave!)
Will insert two 6.0 v 3000 batteries.
The far left servo is for the rudder and tail wheel and the other 2 are for the elevators.
The near servo is for the throttle.
G-62. Should 'pull' it as the plane isn't real heavy.
Looks like plenty of lead on the fire wall!
Didn't know there was a tank already in the fuse.
I, always, like to have a servo operated choke but it may be difficult mounting a servo to control it!
Big surprise: the clunk tubing is 'stiff as a board'!
Some 'barb's and 'clips' to secure fuel line to brass tubing.
Forgot the name of this stuff but I bought about 10' of it about 10 years ago and it stays 'soft'.
I think Sullivan has a new product that, also, is soft.
YES, that vent tubing is pointing in the wrong direction but is 'correct' in the tank!
Easier to tighten a hex head versus a phillips!
Much better. If 24 oz tank isn't enough, I'll route the 32 oz tank to the engine.
Had to spray the choke with carb cleaner as it was 'stiff'.

Checking if 'all works' before installing parts!
Bind and check.
Surprised most movable surfaces were close to 'center'.
Gear down, flaps down and ailerons right.
Needs more flap; like about 45 degrees.
Ailerons left.
Gear up and wing surfaces neutral.
Had to add a spring to get tail doors to close.
Wheel is suppose to protrude half way out.
This is going to be a 'beater' for now so 'good enough'.
Want to make sure it flies before doing any 'serious' work on it.
The mains are Robart's but the tail looks like Darrell's gear!
Two pieces of ply already attached to the doors with holes so I put a 'light' spring between them and let the gear close them, manually.
The resin often crystallizes so I have to 'nuke it' to make it a liquid (one time only and never seems to bother the tensile strength).
Trailer tires low at 40 PSI and needs 65 PSI (surprised they don't take what an average vehicle takes!)
Cycled the gas in the generators to make sure they 'work'.

PM my 1/3 scale Nieuport 28 for this w/e dawn patrol.
The spring starter needed replacing on the Zenoah G-62.
An extra metal plate needed removing to access the 'starter'.
A few of the 'roller' bearings were missing on the old 'starter'.

Idiot maneuver!
I flipped my 1/3 Nieuport N-28 on takeoff; very difficult to flip this plane but I managed to sever the tail section.
Pealed back the Solartex so I could epoxy the tail back onto the fuse.
The 'break' was L shaped from the 'access' hole to the end of the stringers and then vertical along the stringers.
Fortunately, I build 'modular' so the rudder and horizontal stab were removed.
Lots of epoxy secured it.
Having the plane on it's 'nose' made alignment much easier.
Some 're-enforcements'; 1/4"X1/2" stringers across 2 'breaks'.
Hot iron to secure the old Solartex plus new Solartex across the 'cut lines'.
Always have 'left over' paint.
The original was spray painted but I just used a 'foam' brush to touch up all the areas.
All better.

Ziroli F4U PM (cont).
Got some 'work' done before the kids came over for Memorial day ribs and steak.
Had to make some wire extensions.
Can't remember but I think it's 20 gauge wire.
I have to use a 1/16" center punch to 'drive' the metal male/female into the plastic connector.
Replaced the one 2700 battery with two 6 v 3000 batteries behind a ply retaining wall.
Homemade 'retainer' for air hoses.
The 'air' fill is on the wing. Replaced it with an 'air fill' and 'air gauge'.
I, always, put them on a piece of removable ply since 'sooner or later' the retaining nut works loose and this makes it easy to tighten the nut.
My usual spot for 'air fill' and 'air valve' is in the fuse but the original builder has it in the wing so I left it there.
Interesting 'setup' for the air valve from the previous builder.
I used this 'spring' setup on my Ziroli P-61 'spoilers' so movement was only in one direction for the spoilers via the servo.
I have never heard of this servo that is used on the flaps. It's large and seems to be able to operate all 6 flaps so I'll leave it 'as is'.
Next will be the new ON/OFF switch for the receiver.
While out in my shop I heard a lot of airplanes. Must of been a local 'air show'.

As, previously, mentioned, getting this plane ready to fly after purchasing it last Fall.
Checked all the internal servos insuring all's 'good'.
Used lots of paper towels and '409' to clean what looks like about 10 years of dust!
Fuse cleaned, wing 'not'.

Got 7,100 RPM's. I like 6,200-6,500. This prop is only 22 and I, normally, use a 24 on G-62's.
Installed some 'pins' to keep the prop from 'breaking loose'.
A little tail heavy so I added weight box with lead.
In addition to the lead weight already on the fire wall.
5"- 5 1/2" from wings LE at the fuse.
Ready to 'rock n roll'.
Three tries and a 'no go'.
First time plane didn't get enough speed to I aborted the take off. The 7,100 RPM prop doesn't have enough pitch.
Next tried a 24X12 but too low at 5,200 RPM's.
Next was a 24X10 at 6,200 RPM'S but the wood blade stripped the pins so, at least it's on the ground in 'one piece'!
Club has food every Tuesday evening; ate my 'share'!

There were several 'dings' on the plane showing balsa so I masked them 'off' and then filled them in with 'easy sand'.
Wing's LE.
Stab's LE and a few other places.
Two part 'bondo' from my local auto store. Great stuff; hardens in several minutes and sands easily (big surprise!).
After sanding down to the tape, the tape was removed and then I 'feathered' the 'easy sand' edges using 220.
Top of fuse has a couple small holes.
Some 'vette' engine blue looked about 'right' so I used it and a foam brush to apply the paint.
A couple 'coats'. Not the best match but 'good enough' for now.
'Thinking about it', I should have masked off a rectangular area to make it look a little 'better'!
The 'rotating arm' was protruding above the surface of the wing when I rotated the gear.
Took the gear off and found one mount completely 'free'. (glad I wasn't able to fly it the on the 'first try'!).
Some epoxy plus I shimmed the retract to raise it from the top of the wing.
Interesting 'set up' to retract the front door. Easy to bend the wire at the 90 degree part to get the door to mount flush with the wing's surface.
This prop should work well with the G-62 engine.

Decided to glass the gear wells which I, usually, do anyway.
It seems to work as I don't remember ever having a gear 'break' through the top of the wing!

With mid 70's, low winds and sunny, we 'conjugated' the local club's field.
Only one flight on the TF P-47 due to 2 cowl mount breaks.
Got the 'maiden' in on the Ziroli F4U Corsair. Only needed 2 clicks of down elevator.
Gear wouldn't come down but only thing that broke was the CF prop (and pride!).
Big 'full size' air show this week in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Ziroli F4U PM.
One of the 'air lines' detached from one of the main gears while in flight.
Replacing all the old 'air lines'.
Got the 'mains' done. Getting late, will finish up, tomorrow.
Lucky the plane flew as 3 of the 4 engine mount bolts came loose.
When, previously, PM'ing it, the engine was secure and, figured, the bolts, after a decade old, would, probably, be rusted 'in place'!
MMM: never 'assume'!
Only one flight on the TF P-47 due to 2 cowl mount breaks.
Got the 'maiden' in on the Ziroli F4U Corsair. Only needed 2 clicks of down elevator.
Gear wouldn't come down but only thing that broke was the CF prop (and pride!).
Big 'full size' air show this week in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Ziroli F4U PM.
One of the 'air lines' detached from one of the main gears while in flight.
Replacing all the old 'air lines'.
Got the 'mains' done. Getting late, will finish up, tomorrow.
Lucky the plane flew as 3 of the 4 engine mount bolts came loose.
When, previously, PM'ing it, the engine was secure and, figured, the bolts, after a decade old, would, probably, be rusted 'in place'!
MMM: never 'assume'!
