RE: RE: Ziroli P38 construction
Chris,
The color scheme I chose is that of the 5,000th P-38 built. It was used as a promotional device to sell war bonds in 1943 or 44. My favorite color is red, and it was easy to paint, so why not? What you can't see in the photos is that the bottom of the wing has large letters spelling "YIPPIE" along the span. The exclamation relates to the designation given to the original prototype of the '38, YP-38.

I remember now, kind of like the 5000th B-17 that was built and autographed by all the employees - 5 Grand I believe is what it was named. Went to war just like that too.
Your 38 looks outstanding!!

Hello again, gettin this puter sorted out, possibly gettin something new with tax money. Hopefully my puter will hold out till then. We have completed lots of work lately with no pics posted. I am going to try and remember some of the little detils, but most of this construction has been pretty straight forward.

Hi guys. Been following this closely - we are at the pretty much the same point in construction, although my booms are pretty much done. Take a look at the end of the thread titled "P38 documentation" - I have some pics and thoughts about Fowler flaps there you might be interested in seeing.

Hi Lightning,
We are pretty close to being done with the center section, need to sheet everything after we figure out our flaps and servo lay out and such first. Have not even started our booms yet, so it sounds like your further ahead than us. Haven't had much time to work on it lately as spring is arriving and yard work is taking priority (just ask my wife!) . Seriously though, we're in no hurry, want to do it right the first time. Thanks for looking in, and please, continue to do so!!
Take care,
Chris.

RE: RE: Ziroli P38 construction
Did you guys ever get the instructions? If not, I can mail them to you after scanning them in. The plywood around the wing cutouts, as I recall, was a little tricky. Also, when you remove the top part over the wing ... again, there are some hints here. But I am most interested in how folks hinge the landing gear bay doors. The full scale version used "studebaker" hinges - basically a hinge which has about seven pivot points, and, as a result, the doors drop down and swing out. They achieve a perfectly flush hinge line this way. I am finding it impossible to use the robart hinges called out and make this work, but worse, the plans really do not tell you where to put them in the first place. So I will be very interested to see how you guys tackle this part.

Lightning Fan,
We do not have any instructions, just the plans. Needless to say there are many areas of our construction where we have to sit back, study, and decipher what the plans were telling us by looking at several sheets. The nose gear door was a challenge in itself, as the plans where kinda of vague as to where to place the key frames (or formers as the RC world calls them). Luckily we have several reference books on the real P-38 to fall back on and finally figured it out, but what a pain that was. Could not find your thread on your project, please post your link. Would very much appreciate your tips on the gear doors!

Link to a discussion on Fowlers:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_21.../tm.htm#212392
Look at the end of the thread for some of my pics on this.
I have not succesfully hinged the doors, so I don't have anything to share there. I've tried a bunch of times on the main gear doors, with unsatisfactory results. Hopefully, one of the guys who has done this will reveal the secret!!

RE: RE: Ziroli P38 construction
Your P-38 is looking great. We are now at the point of constructing our flaps and trying to figure out the fowler installation, may be asking you soon for more details on yours. As far as instuctions go, by all means, if you have them we would love to get a copy of them. So far we've done ok without them, but it's taken up a lot of our time trying to decipher what the plans are telling us. Maybe if we had the instructions things would go a little quicker. Have you made much more progress on yours since your last posting on your thread? If so, please post more pictures!
Appreciate any help you can give us,
Chris.

With regard to hinging the gear doors, i am posting a few photos of my door hinge installation below. the Robart hinges can be made to work just fine, with the doors fitting flush.
Sorry for the duplicate photos

RE: <span class=
It's great to see that there is so much intrest in one of the nations finest warbirds. I'm working on a zp-38 myself. been at it off and on for 5 yrs mostly due to lack of working space after my divorce. I am scratch building mine as well. I figure that if I'm going to spend a small mint on this lady I might as well but forth the complete effort and build it all by hand. I've been building since I was 13 and flying rc for the last 27 yrs. I've really learned alot from all those heavy top flite kits over the years.lol. I will try to download some pics of my progress asap... having problems getting what I have to download right now.

RE: Ziroli P38 construction
I still have my copy of my instructions if you still need them. but just to let you know they are kind of vague and with the newer building techniques available they will afford you alot of room to apply these methods.
