Default GiantScalePlanes Spitfire & Engine Question

Hello guys/gals

I'am thing of purchasing a Giantscaleplanes Spitfire arf 71 inch span
now i have a few questions

i am wanting good performance so i was looking at an asp.120 4 stroke to haul this beautyfull bird around but i was told that it would only fly scale like with that engine
so now i am leaning towards a super tigre 2300 2 stroke it will swing an 18x10 prop and give excllent performance so what should i do ??????????

also i an getting robat air retracts whats the best to get? i seen a pair for 99.00cad at great hobbies good up to a 8-18lb plane and the kit with the valves and tank is only 69.00 also at greathobbies

would just like some input for you people that knows how the plane flys and how the st2300 runs

Cheers Bridi

The one in [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=117]RCU Review[/link] flew great and fast with a YS 91FZ four stroke. I have a YS 110FZ in mine, and it definitely does not fly scale. Rolls and huge loops are effortless, and the plane lifts off the runway at half throttle. The plane weighs less than 12 lbs with plenty of wing area, so any 120 4-stroke will haul it around just fine.

Hi,

I fly mine with a ASP 108 2 Stroke, with a pitts sytle muffler and it flys faultless. Althou a four stroke would sound lovley in it.

You will make an excellent choice on this warbird. This is my fav plane out of my fleet which is now approaching 15 planes (Must stop buying them) the problem comes i need a bigger car to cart them around in

Good luck on your choice and if you need any building tips or advice plz post

Bridi, watch out for the customer service of GSP, If you have any trouble with the model, you'll be on your own as the owner can be difficult shall we say. otherwise the kit isn't bad. I have the small Thunderbolt which is decent and the small Ryan ST which is an early one and sucks. They improved later.

There is another place up north in Richmond, B.C., Canada, that sells these CM Pro ARF's, and they are friendlier and much easier to deal with. In fact, I bought my Spit and Hellcat from this place. Hopefully that was where Bridi got his.

well i am thinking of buying this plane right from giantscaleplanes.com

because there is a hobby shop here in canada that sells these arf s and well lets say they are $130cad more in this certin hobbyshop (HobbyWholesale.com)
so i can save some money on this plane

here is a tally of what i plan on spending on this plane

spitfire.90arf 414cad
asp.120 220cad
robart air retracts with the kit tank lines etc 8-18lb 169.99cad
lowvibe engine mount 54.99cad

thats $858.98 with out taxes
so i really dont want to take any chances with shipping damages or what not

"DragonHeart"- I wanted to know about the ASP-1.08 ENG. your using in the GSP-Spitfire.
Did you have to cut a opening in the side of the cowl for the cyl. head to stick out of??
If so,how much of the cyl. head sticks of the cowl would you say??
Any other cuts in the cowl you had to make for this ENG. or pitts. muffler to fit??
One last thing, how do you like the ASP 1.08 ENG.,any problems with it??
Thanks...

Hi Big Daddy,

The Asp 108 runs fine with no problems, plently of power for this spit, althou a four stroke would sound more the part but has great performace to fly scale or do all the stunts....

Yes some of the cowl has to be cut away for the standard muffler but no different to most cowls. I would say about 3 cm sticks out visible, so not much at all. If i was to do it again i would probably go for a pitts style muffler for this, but the standard one will work ok just a bit more cutting is needed.

Hope thats of some help

Has anyone of you used mechanical retracts and if so which ones, or even better, do you know which ones would be best suited.
Cheers, Bob

No mechanical retracts are suitable for this plane. If mechanical retracts on the 8 lbs 60 size H9 Mustang are already wobbly, then mechanical retracts used on this 11 lbs plane will be even more wobbly and will contribute to more nose overs. Mechanical retracts will cost you more in the long run. Go with a set of Spring Air retracts with straight oleo struts.

Richard, thank you for taking the time to reply. I now wonder if you could elaborate a bit for me on the installation of your retracts. How much modofication was necassary and which specific model are the retracts. And, last but not least, where do I get the best deal :-) ?

Do you have pictures you could share ?

Thank you in advance

Installation of my pneumatic retracts was straight forward. I only had to widen the spacing between the stock mounting rails just a little bit for each retract housing to slide into and grind a notch in one of the ribs for each air cylinder. I also enlarged the wheel well openings to 4" to accept 3-3/4" diameter main wheels.

I'm using a set of custom made Century Jet with 1/2" diameter oleo struts, but Spring Air would work just as well.

here is a short video showing the retracts in action: [link]http://www.whitetyphoon.com/rc/gsp_retracts01.mov[/link] (1.9MB)

I've had two GSP kits and I didn't keep them because I changed my mind about them, from what I could see the kits were excellent and I liked the construction and detail put on the fuselage. Panel lines molded in the fiberglass and awsome paint job. I just ordered the zero 71" from them and can't wait, if it's as good as the FW-190 I had, I'll be happy. I know that the owner of the company has a problem with customer service but I resolved it through the UPS claims dept. They shipped me a damaged FW-190 and after spending 30 minutes with 2 people they put the dealer in contact with the owner who said to take it up with UPS. So UPS came and inspected the shipping box and found no damage, they simply sent it back to GSP and demanded a new one to ship. I just let the bigger companies deal with the issue when the managment was being difficult. Other than that, I like the kits and think they rival some of the other companies ARF's by a long shot.
Just my thoughts.[:-]

I'm building the GSP P-47 (71" span) and I purchased the mechanical retracts for them too. Just putting them in. The struts look weak for a grass field but will probably do OK on a paved runway, at least for a while if you can land softly. Usually I don't do that too often.

The kit is not bad, I like it. Nice finish.

Good luck with those mechanical retracts and prepare for some wobbly landings. Also, you might want to pick up a strut bending tool from Cental Hobbies.

Thanks for the advice Richard. I have the strut tool. Works well.

If the mechanicals don't hold up I might try the air retracts.
