Hi Doolittleraider,

Mostly the stangs I've seen flying are using DA85.

Cheers,
Roger

Got my MVVS 80 in after about a 4 month order period. Looks good. YouTube videos using this engine show it to be a good engine. Call Steve at Chief to get one ordered from Czechoslovakia. He might have ordered a few more than mine to sell. Chief does not show the 80cc on their site, so, you'd have to call.

Outstanding Koen! Love to see pics of your engine install if you have the time. I started a separate thread on it here:

Hi Tom, HIs name is Chad Veich, I just emailed him to ask if it was OK to post his site. Don't want to assume.

My mustang is almost done with paint. Used liquid metal, it looks stunning. Now I need to do the decals…all 200 or so of them… ughhhh. Hoping to have it ready by summer.

Email received Mike, thanks for the heads up. I figured I would just respond here as my web site is centered around my architectural model work and does not have any info on my r/c related products. The big 'stang is a jaw dropper by the way, fantastic work.

Thanks Chad. The guy in the photo is by buddy Jon, he painted it. I'm just a lowly assembler.... ;-) I thought this would be my kick around weekend plane with a cool sounding motor. It is evolving into something much nicer!

I started putting on the nomenclature and the gas caps that Chad made. Composite ARF did not put them in the same place on each wing!!!! And they're also too large. I had to have Chad make me a couple different sizes to match the molding on the wing and fuse. So, I think the caps looks outstanding, but pissed that CARF didn't make them symmetrical. The plane I'm modeling has one black stripe and it crosses one of the caps…not happy about this at all, wish I would had caught it before paint and sanded it out.

Thats no problem! In WWII these stripes were painted on in any way they could get them on and included rags, paint brushes and mops! Yours looks like a Foose Custom!

Chris, it is a problem, this plane is modeled after a present day plane... I wasn't planning on beating it up.... Might change my tune now... This is absolutely killing the OCD in me.... ;-) This plane is based on Bill Bailey's plane, but it is well kept.

I was annoyed that CARF put an additional gas cap out on the wing tip, looks like this plane used it. None of the three-views I have show them. Probably gonna leave it off because they are too big and out on the wing tip it would look odd. This is far from scale anyway... A lot of the panel lines aren't remotely in the right place.

Doc,
You are right, there are several deviations one tends to discover (at the wrong time) like the gear ribs are different length from wing root and so on. Maybe with evolving technology someone will come up with true 1/4 scale. Having said that; I don't think anyone will notice when they see that beautiful replica with that awesome engine at the field. Lets face it, Peter is right "we all have a liberal amount of OCD" to build this plane.

I've got one I think is pretty accurate but it's going to take a bit more work than the CARF!

I have a 3W P51D which is pretty good however the nose section is a little "overly" round along the top of the cowl. I intend to flatten this off to give it a more scale appearance as I did with my 1/5 TF scale cowls I build (and sell)

At least with the 3W airframe the wing fuel caps are in the right place and don't have wing tip filling points! I'm not aware that any wings for a P51 had these! I've seen a Comp-ARF wing that had filling points on the underside of the wing! Not good!

I know Mike! My OCD kicks my butt too! Why do think I sold my CARF-Stang! I don't have time to redesign products I paid good money for. I didn't care for the detail, mold seams, landing gear mounts etc etc. I saw those extra caps too.
BUT! Seeing the projects that have popped up recently and the new engines I'm slowly changing my mind, lol.

Mustangsmustangs.com notes that this particular P-51 was modified to have aux. 50 gallon tanks in the outboard wings way back in 1980. Always have to be very careful when using a restored example as a reference unless you are attempting to duplicate said aircraft specifically.

I made a reference to that above Chad, love that site. Problem is, CARF made the gas caps way too big on the wing, and they look even bigger on a more narrow part of the wing. The larger ones you made for me still don't cover the entire mold line that they put in…. I put the stickers around it where they think gas cap should be. You can see the mold lines of the handle at 3 and 9 o'clock…. Oh well…. I will never compete at this stuff so not that big of a deal. The asymmetry kills me though! We have a plan to make it less obvious.
