Discovered another setback. The spring-airs that were sent to me are 90deg, not 85deg. Need to send them back and get the 85deg. Looks like a SpitBolt.<g> Since I'll be waiting on the retracts I'm gonna go ahead and cutout the tail gear hole and do the hard point mounts on the wings for bomb drops.

OOOOOKaaay! This doesnt make since. I was told be someone at spring-air that a well known builder (I just dont remember who, Platt or someone like that) did a review and used 90deg retracts. The robarts are clearly not 90deg. Pretty sure they are 85deg. But he said to send them in and he would exchange them for 85deg anyway. So not really any problem.

That's a beautiful airplane aps f4u, good luck!
An older member of our club is building one of these w/ a US 41 for power. He's been working on it for about 2 years now, and it really looks great! It's almost ready for the first flight, and he's asked me to test fly it for him.
I'm gonna hang out here for awhile and read your flight test reports so I can get a leg-up so to speak

Proptop I also have a TF P-47 giant scale and I have a US41 in it and for me it flys just great. I did have a glitch hit me last summer while takeing off. And for about two seconds there she hung on the prop in a 3D mode.[X(] Not good though I just gave her full down and full throttle and she pulled out of the situation but not in time to avoid teraferma. Broke the right wing off and punched a hole in the fuse. But I have most of this repaired and am getting ready to recover the wing half. I'm also planning on putting bomb drops on her. I also have a smaller P-47 that I'm dressing up just like the big one. My plane is copye of Icky and me which was stationed in the Phillipines with the 318 squad. Both are fashined after the first Icky and Me which were razor backs but after that he switch to the bubble top. But I prefer the razor backs for me. If i had a scanner I would post some pictures but thats not possible at this time.[&o]

NEWS FLASH!!!!
Spring Air has come out with a robart drop in replacement for the TF giant P-47. No plastic in this retract. Struts included. I dont recall if it looked like accurate P-47 struts. They also have robart clone robo struts. I guess if robart can clone them, they can clone robart. They also have 100deg nose gear. I received an order from them last weekend with a new brochure on it. Looks like SA has been busy.
Too late for me. I already cut the templates for the SA 404 and have them in the wing.
BTW- If you look on the Spring Air site (gear finder), it shows 403 for the TF giant P-47. These are 90deg retracts. The 404 are what you want, they are 85deg retracts.

RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!!
Hi Edwin. Did they give a price on the new drop in retracts from Spring Air. I checked out their web site to see if there was any info. I haven't bought my main gear there yet and was leaning toward the Robart so wouldn't have to do the extra work to fit them. But an all metal drop in gear would be a good thing. By the way when you installed your 404's did they give you template for the ribs and was that number 5 rib cut deeper than the stock rib. Thanks Bob.

I just got them last saturday. But they did give templates. They're a little rough but did the job. I still have to install the mounting rails yet. Didnt see any price info but here is a picture of the brochure they sent. Appears its real.

Hello
I am considering the TF P47 GS for a project a couple of planes down the road. Anybody know if a G62 will hide in the cowling?
Thanks
Sam

I'm baaaaaaaack!
anyone miss me? No? Poo !
Work, arrghhhhhhhhhhhhhh trips arggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
bloody e commerce websites arrrgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
finally found some "me " time to build. First wing half has the top sheeted and I have cut out the scale wheel bay. It still has to be finished off and lined etc. That will happen after I get all the angles and dangles sorted out for the retracts themselves. As you can see from the pics the wheel well will easily accomondate a 6" wheel.
more to come
cheers

Peter, My name is simon, what part of Brisbane are you from, which club do you belong, I like the job you doing with making room for larger wheels, wish I had done that with mine bit late now though, do you have any experience with using flite metal?
I am considering using it for the P47, I am fairly new to the hobby, and still feeling may way so to speak.
buy for now

RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!!
G'day Simon,
mate thanks for that. Been having trouble getting time to do much to it of late between work and setting up an ebay e.commerce site.
Anyway I am with the Tinglapa MAC
[link=http://www.tmac.asn.au/]Tingalpa MAC [/link]
We are Northside in the Pine Rivers area. Sorry have never used FM, there is ac hap on here who is covering his P47 in FM and has a thread on it, just do a search and you will find it.
Now more problems re retracts etc.
Have cut out the wheels wells - no dramas in that. Made a template of the well area and where the retracts go from my 3 views, overlaid that on the wing to check everything - again no dramas.
BUT!
the Robart retracts I have which are for this kit will only take a wheel up to 5" which is really annoying as I have a nice set of 6" wheels I wanted to use. I could buy new struts from Robart that will take the 6" wheel, guess I need to have a think about that for a bit.
Now still have to get the correct geometry on the retracts for the rake forward angle when they are in the down position. I was going to use the angle built into the ribs for the gear rails but using this leaves the wheel at angle in the wheel well with the top of the tire tilted up at the front about 10 degrees.
I'm going to have to play with the angle of the rails a bit more to cure this problem.
Anyway will post some more pics once I get that sorted out.
cheers
Peter

RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!!
Daddy Sam,
I have been flying mine for about a year with a G62 in it. Works great and balances well. The 62 fits really nice. I used the conversion block under the carb in order to clear the cowl. Used Slimline muffler and cut hole in bottom for exit. Only problem is vibration. If you put in a dummy radial, take the time to secure it well.

RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!!
Looky looky more progress whoo hoo!!
Got motivated after the warbirds meet this weekend and got stuck into the landing gear rails. Can not get quite enough down angle to compensate the for the required axle twist but have to compromise a little.
anyway it will work out ok but have had to go for 5.5" robart machined mains instead of the 6" Len Gardener wheels I was going to use. Will be a tight fit as the robarts are 1 - 5/8th thick and with the bit of an angle on the axle the front of the wheels tilts up a tad. I'm going to try shaving a little off the rails to get this down a degree or 2 which will help.
Anyway a few pics posted, you will notice the little customs bits of ply I have fabricated to support the gear rails, they should distribute heavy landing stress with ease.
cheers

RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!!
LHS gear rail is now epoxied in place and the gear is mounted. I still want to shave a a bit of an incline on the rails to tilt the leg forward a couple of degrees if possible.
One mistake I made is to not shave enough off the side of rails to facilitate removal of the gear so when they need to come out I am going to have a battle. I think I can get a pieve of thin permagrt up between the rails and the landing gear box so hopefully I can shave a little off so the gear will come out easily.
Tonight I will sand all the ribs even, glue in the servo rails, run airlines and servo leads plus I want to add in some bearers around the landing gear mounts to support the sheeting and provide a mounting point for the cover that will hide the retract box.
Othyer job is to start thinking about the retractable landing light and wingtip nav lights.
Will post some more piccies as I progress. Hard part is over and the rest is now straightforward.
cheers

peter make sure you can get those out to work on them. also i noticed you didnt punch out the circle from the retract rib doubler. that needs to go for dowel placement

yeah i know, I'm simply going to shave a bit off the inside of the rails using the piece of permagrit I have on the bench - not a big deal.
What circle to punch out do you mean?

on the rib doubler for the retracts. Look at the rib you will see a circle that has to punch out for two reasons. To allow air cylinder to pass and the disc is glued inside the fuselage bulkhead that has the dowel holes it allows for minor adjustments for the dowels.

oh that one, not an issue as I have had to cut away quite a bit of rib to fit the retracts in on an angle then made up customs reinforcement pieces from 3/8 structural ply.
As for the discs that is not an issue either as I'll just fabricate a couple out of ply.
easy peasy
cheers

use a carbon fiber rod to reinforce the wing. My bird waqsw 4 years old and folded in a loop. the center joiner cracked right in the middle.

no need for that, if you look at the pics you will note a for and an aft spar which will have play dihedreal braces installed. I am also using 1/2" carbon fibre tape epoxied along the bottom of the fore and aft spar to take high +G and heavy landing forces. Not needed on the top of the spars as I don't intend trying any outside loops so no neg Gs to worry about

RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!!
BK,I'm getting ready to get into this P47 drill. I just got my kit the other day. My wife said "Another one?" and I told her it was all caused by Peter from OZ. She just looked at me and shook her head(I get a lot of that). Anyway I have a G62. Could you tell me more about the carb adapter and where to get one? Also what is the weight on your P47 and did you finish it in glass? Thanks, DWR.
