RE: cmp p47 thunderbolt
With a .91fx. it certainly moves..I usually fly at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. I love it! This plane is also very stable in the wind. Total weight came out to 7.5lbs. This plane is very tail heavy. The 91 balanced it out nicely!

It is fairly easy to install mechanical retract in the precut position, the problem is that this position puts the wheels to close to the center of gravity. I have not flown the plane that much and I've destroyed 5 props by nosing over on landings. A prop everytime you land get very expensive.

RE: cmp p47 thunderbolt
I have Hobbico retracts in the P47. Yes nosing over is a problem on landing. I use 100% throw in elevator with 50% expo. What I do is before touch down is to kill the engine and ease up on the elevator.
I just clocked my P47 with a O.S .91 Fx running a 14/6 prop...this plane moves at 83mph...I think I can get to over 90mph with a 13/8 prop.
Thanks Benny for clocking the plane. Big shout to John and Joe who stood by..in case I need to put the plane in a DOA bag..

I am in the process of building this plane for a customer. What model # are the retracts.
I am going to install a Saito 72. Maybe an inverted pitts so I can mount the engine upside down and not have to cut the cowl. I installed a 150 with an inverted pitts on the CMP Hellcat and it worked great. We'll see........
If you are interested you can check out some of the warbirds I have built. www.zaprcproducts.com

Great thanks. This is a really nice plane. It is screaming for detail. Here are some current photos and some progress soon to come. [link=http://www.houstonrc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=133&sid=4b7c0181c6dcc1171afd1e06b0996b41]P-47 Pics on HoustonRC[/link]

RE: cmp p47 thunderbolt
I shimmed the retracts forward to put the wheels just in front of the leading edge. They come up and down fine, the tires are at a slight angle in the pockets. While in flight it is very hard to notice that though. I didnt get any more nose overs after that. This idea was suggested to me by a Rep for Robarts at warbirds over Indiana last year. I used Hobbico mechanical retracts with a Hitec servo, worked just fine.

RE: cmp p47 thunderbolt
Here is some more progress on my P-47 build. I found a flex pipe by Saito and routed it on the botom. No more big ugly muffler sticking out. I also got the cowl all cut and fitted.

Zap, the bigger the diameter of the prop the better your plane will fly. I would go with a two blade prop if it will clear the ground. My tower .46 would pull my aerobatic planes at probably 60-70mph, with the big radial cowl on this plane I was lucky to get 40mph.

RE: cmp p47 thunderbolt
Makes sense. You gotta get the prop over the cowl. That prop I am using is a 14X7 three blade, though is is in the specs for the Saito 72, I think it will be to big. I really want to use a three blade on this plane. I will see how many RPMs I get with the 14X7 3 blade before she flys.

Some more progress !!!! Almost done. Just have the receiver to install. (and make it all work) She ballances out at the recommended 90mm with a weighted prop nut and the battery mounted under the fuel tank. I am very cautious about the recommend CG, though. I will add a few ounces in the nose along with the receiver to get 85mm and she will fly. More pics can be found [link=http://168.144.201.183/airplanes_we_have_built_pg4.htm]HERE[/link]

Not yet....I am still ballancing everything. Once it is ballanced then I will see how "tipsy" the nose is. I did, however take your advise and shimmed my 40 size P-51 landing gear. It seemed to help, but running on asphalt I never had any tip overs. Just when I skidded off on the grass and tried to taxi back. dohhh

RE: cmp p47 thunderbolt
The landings were a little rough. When the engine is cut the plane drops like a rock. We lost the elevator feel at low speeds and it landed hard. The Robart struts and Robart rubber tires all held up fine......just a nose over.
A couple of things that need to be adjusted:
1. The retracts need to be shimed forward (just as I was advised) It is a little tipsy.
2. Need much more elevator than recommended 15mm. I had it set at 15mm with 40% expo and at low speeds the elevator got REAL mushy. When landing the elevator response was lost altogether. Increasing the elevator and keeping the 40% expo should fix the problem. On my P-51 I land with full up elevator just before touchdown and it settles down nice and soft.

RE: cmp p47 thunderbolt
You are not alone....Mine lands the same. I actually have 100% elevator throw with 50-60% expo. This plane you must fly in....learned it the hard way...A lot of nose overs...but with a little power an almost full elevator it landed like a champ.
I also added a piece of plastic under the cowl's chin...just for the nose overs. But this plane is very strong. I know this with at least 10 hard landings before figuing out how to land this bird.
But once in the air, the plane flys great...I have an OS .91fx with a three bladed 13 x8 prop.
All the best!

RE: cmp p47 thunderbolt
On mine, I actually used two servos for the elevator. (just more insurance for when I pull out of the scale manuvers)
especially the high dives.............

Thanks for the advise. I just knew a lot more elevator on landings would help.
BDREW, I like the chin guard idea.
Scienceiscool, That is Alvin RC. We call it the country club. They just re-paved the runway (like it needed it) They also have an air conditioned clubhouse and a full kitchen. Oh yea the BBQ PIT ! We bring lots a food to grill and fly till dark.
