Hi,
I bought some 1/64" tape to make panel lines.
I was just wondering... How many layers of primer do I have to spray over them before applying color?
Anyone any experience...!?

I sprayed two coats of primer over the chart tape. removed the tape and rubbed the lines with fine wet and dry paper (wet). Seemed to work OK.

Rudy if it's high build primer 2 good coats will be fine. If it is standard aerosol primer 3 will be necessary. Remember also there is no need to prime the entire surface, just spray along the line of the tape, the fan overspray will feather nicely.

PS mark out both top and bottom wing before you apply the tape. I did top and bottom separately and made some minor errors in alignment.

I use two heavy coats of primer also, just over the tapes and maybe an inch or so either side rather than over the entire surface of the model. I then wet sand the primer back to reveal the tape which helps it to come off cleaner. (leaves a less jagged edge)

very, very good points. Keep in mind, that prior to applying the panel lines, your surface should be "paint ready", meaning all grain/seems are filled and ready to receive color coats. The "panel primer" is just that - an illusion that represents one solid panel meeting another solid panel. It is totally unecessary to fill in with primer between the chart pak tape. Primer is pretty heavy stuff and as such, most should be sanded off leaving a smooth, level surface. Myself, I prefer polyester primers that are catalyst based as they are EXTREMELY high fill and dont require as much as some of the other primers out there. Of course, spraying equipment is necessary, but if you stay in this hobby, an inexpensive 2 hp compressor and small spray gun and air brush are a must. good luck on your project!!!

Very nice work!!!

It's my first attempt at a scale model having built "none scale" many times. The Spitfire in the pictures is a Mick Reeves 1/6 scale and is almost ready to be let loose, but not for a while. I am reasonable happy with the result.

Carver the rivets are applied with a soldering iron and took a 3 weeks of evenings to prepare and apply to the fuselage and wing.

Hi guys!

I now sprayed FOUR coats on a test peace and pult the tape off... Not much of a panelline visible! I thought I sprayed on a pretty thick coat!
How about applying a coat with a roller?
Or will the lines show up when I put color on?

Hello,

Have ever thought about "forced panelling" technique used in plastic modeling? Basically, you lay a masking tape anterior to the panel lines then using an almost dry brush with darker color of the main frame brushing AGAINST the tape. The paint particles will be "sweept up" against the tape producing a nice sharp panel line. This technique works great on 1/5- 1/6 scale planes. Anything larger will need the technique outlined in previous posts. I have done so on my O-1 Bird Dog and it looks very convincing. DP

I'm about to start a TF FW190. I'm looking around for 1/64"& 1/32" tape but none of the major retailers carry any. Where can I find it .
Is there any alternative methods for creating panel lines . I'm thinking maybe the careful use of a reamer could work. Please advise

The tape you are looking for is from a company called "Letraset" and the tape is branded "Letraline".

I have 1/64" (0.4mm) with part number 471.

Looking at the main web site the 0.4mm tape is no longer available, next best is 0.5mm which should be OK. I am sure with more than 2 minutes on the net with this information you should be able to find some. You might have to get it in from overseas.

Still a long way to go before this baby is airworthy!

It will probably not fly before spring 2006.

But it’s okay, this gives me the time to practice a little more with the P51D. The last few flights weren’t that great and I have to do some repair on my landing gear first…
Takeoffs and landings is always difficult because of the short fuse and short distance between CG and wheel axle…

Hi guy's I found some 1 /64 and 1/32 chart tape from a company called chart pack I think it is the same as ltraset and you can find it at Architect supply stores
Although the 1 /64 is in my opinion too thin but the 1/32nd seems perfect
