Andy, The Platt is a good build...but if you wanna dive into something via glass/foam, I would check into the Bob Holman 190's also. A Platt model is pretty fun to build I found..the Holman also as fun, but different, not so much harder, but probably as time consuming and able to make as scale as you want as the outline is fantastic. The Vailly is also a great choice if you haven't considered that one. Choose the one that suits your tastes best for size, scale outline, etc. All will build out well with effort.

Wow! Great to see this tread is still active. I have the Fuse Built, Wing and Landing Gear in place. Had to install the Cockpit at this point before continuing with the rest of the fuse. I have NEVER used fiberglass and Resin before.... Can someone suggest "Brands" that they use? Also ANY helpful Hints would be appreciated!

Ray.

LDM,

How did you make out w/ the Tom Pierce method? I did a Test sample and was pleased w/ the results. However, Talking with other members of my club they tell me to go w/ the "Glass" Method. Their argument is that you don't know what is compatible w/ the Minwax Products and that things may move or crack after time Etc. What do you think?

I used the following method on my Platt FW190, also my first attempt at glassing and it worked really well and would recommennd it to you all;
Glassing info

Make sure that when you handle the glass cloth use either cotton or exam gloves to keep snagging down to a minimum. Use System 3 Glass Coat, It has a viscosity which will result in a nice substrate for the glass and not add too much weight.
The easiest way to do it is to lay the glass down on the bottom surfaces first and remove as many wrinkles as possible. I usually leave about 1" overlay to round over the leading edge and the tips. Use about 3oz (you may have more or less) mix. 1part catalyst to 2 parts epoxy. You have to work pretty fast even though there is a good pot life. I usually thin mine down with DENATURED Alcohol to a water consistency. This will give a good soak to the wood, saturate the glass well and lengthens the pot life NOTE: it doesn't take much thinner to get to this point. Just pour the mix out of a cup along the center of the wind and spread to the leading and trailing edge. I use a credit card style spreader. I save all the offers that come in the mail and they work really well. Use a disposable bristle brush to affix the cloth around the leading edge and the wingtip. With the thinned material there is less likelihood of drips as well. The big secret is not to use TOO much epoxy on the first coat. Look down the wing and look for a DULL finish. If there are any shiny surfaces use a paper towel to blot up the excess. The Fuse and empennage are done the same way.
I use a drafting brush to brush out wrinkes and get the cloth to lay flat and attached to the surface before I start glassing.
Hope this helps.

John

Have done some more work on the Wurger. Wing is almost finished and will be covered with polytex. I will paint it after Ullmann's Weisse3 with the nickname "Ingeborg"
The plane was stationed at Herdla in Norway. hmm. Looks like a Saito 325 will fit in.

the latex poly method is a tried and true alternative to using epoxy, I have several models now that show no signs of any of those problems, your club memebers obviously haven't tried it yet, they might be pleasantly surprised with the results.

I would read through Toms build logs they have alot of scale tips other than the water based glassing method http://tompierce.net/rcplanes/index.htm

When I finish a few of my current builds, I wanna start my dave platt 190. It has all the original parts. The cockpit is resin along with the pilot, static props, gun kit, and the bomb rack. I got the Holman cowl for a Dle55.

I have century jet retracts thus far but may change them out for the Sierra as I've never used century jets due to their reputation.

Funny thing about this kit, I sold this and all these parts some time back (Many years) to fund another kit. I always wished I hadn't. A few weeks ago or so, while searching ebay, I ran into it again. I didn't realize it was my old kit until the seller noticed my name on the box from it's original purchase.. Guess it was ment to be built by me

Hopefully within the year.

Thanks for ALL the feedback. I'll probably go w/ the TP method. I'm about to finish sheeting the wing, so I'll (hopefully) be using the finishing method shortly.

Thanks Again...........KEEP UP THE POSTS ON THIS SITE!!!!!!!!!

Its GREAT to hear from other BUILDERS!

i'm about to start on the wing fillets. Just remembered that I didn't "Glass" the center of the wing for strength. Since I'm going with the Polycrylic Method do you think that the center of the wing should be Glassed for strength?

Thanks,
Ray.

Hey guys... It appears to me that the wings that are pictured are NOT "Epoxied/Glassed" in the center section? Can anyone weigh in on this? I'm getting mixed opinons on this. I glassed the upper wing because it wasn't a problem since its hidden by the fuse. The bottom would be an issue due to the fact that I've already built the Under Belly on the bottom of the wing.

Thanks.

FYI

Just heard back from Dave Platt himself! He tells me that he NEVER Glassed the Center Section. Never had a wing fold yet! I believe he relies on the Glass Cloth that he finishes the plane with...
