These pics were 'stolen' from RCUniverse. They were taken at the 2006 Toledo Expo.
What is so very significant about this model, is that if my information is all correct, what we have here is a very authentically built radio control Corsair model, more specifally modeled after one which flew combat missions over Japan during WW II and was subsequently damaged by ground fire, and this model is built by the person who flew that full scale into combat.
I met Phil Von Ville at the Gathering of Corsairs/ Indianapolis Airshow a few years back, and he told me the story of how he flew this particular Corsair. I remember it so well because I was building a replica of Maj Herman Hanson's Corsair at the time, nearly identical except for number (see post #294 in this thread).
Phil stated that on a combat over Japanese territory, the Corsair was shot up so bad that the aircraft was ultimately shoved overboard after he landed it on the U.S.S. Bennington.
Anyone with more info on this plane and/ or (and more importantly) it's builder, please step forward and contribute what you know.
UPDATE: I did a Google search: "VMF 123 Corsair" and found this, a story about the builder of that great looking Corsair model, and a war hero.
SOMEONE has GOT to do a STORY on THIS GUY! I mean; a magazine article.
Model Aviation please, is anyone listening? He was there at Toledo!
How about RC Report. Send Miss RC Report out to do an interview, I'm sure he'll open up!
Check it out:

Another search:

While I'm at it, a picture of the full scale is on page 146 of "CORSAIR, The F4U in World War II and Korea" by Barrett Tillman.

I saw the Gentleman who owned the Corsair when he placed it next to my SE5a on Friday morning and then again on Sunday afternoon when the show closed. He didn't speak to anyone that I know of. He was an older man and pretty quiet. I wish I had known who he was during the show.. I would have loved to talk to him.. fascinating!

He was 19 in 1945, when he flew his Corsair into combat. He would be about 80 now.
And from what I remember from meeting him, yes he is a gentlman. He seemed to be the type to open up if you were interested in what he had to say, but not a braggart.
I thought about starting a new thread in this forum, about him, but I'm not sure that he would welcome the publicity.
Sure wish I had gone to Toledo this year.

Phil's Corsair is a thing of beauty. He packed a ton of detail in that small aircraft. I thought it was one of the finer models at Toledo this year but because it was smaller I think it was over looked.

I think you are right about being overlooked. He was right next to me and l got a good look at his plane. He did an excellent job with it. I know bigger flies better but that does't mean that it IS better, if you understand my meaning.

I was recently given the job of redoing my local clubs website and I came across these pics of a members Corsair. As it is painted flat black I dont think it is a replica of an actual plane, but I think it looks cool anyway. No-one knows who's Corsair it is. I am guessing it is the Top Flite model due to the numbering on the plane, but I may be wrong. So if you were a member of the Midwest Aeromodeller's club in Western Australia send me an email and I will credit you with the plane.

RE: Show every one what your F4U Corsair looks like. Come see some nice pics of Corsairs.
Another flying season nearly gone up here in the great white north. But one more sunny Sunday gave me the chance to bring my favorite Corsair out again, and a friend was there to take some pics: this time with the Wing Mfg drop tanks on board. 2 Vortac bomb releases hang on to the tanks until I'm ready.
Both are saddled on in 1st pic, 2nd pic has second one falling.
Retractable tailwheel malfunction forced me to leave it down for this flight.
Once again; this is a 9 lb, 3 oz (empty) Top Flight Corsair with Saito .82 purring along (about 2/3 throttle) while swinging a Master Airscrew 3 blade 13 x 8. Robart 615 retracts with RoboStruts.
Finish is as was Lt Herman Hanson's F4U-1D aboard the U.S.S. Bennington in 1945.

RE: Show every one what your F4U Corsair looks like. Come see some nice pics of Corsairs.
Well I will throw in my 2 cents. This is a Royal 60 size built from a 197o's kit I bought in 1983. I built it in 1996. I has Rhom-air retracts, a Saito 100, coverite and a touch of moncote, painted with perfect paint. It weighs 9.75 lbs. Like all Royal plans it flies perfectly. I have built a half a dozen Royal kits and they have all been great. If you have the patience, try for lightness, keep it straight you all will be rewarded. When they came out in the 70's the engines were not reliable like now and the radio equipment was the same, so most of these kits, the ones that made it to the field often had problems, but with todays equipment they are as good as it gets (far more scale than any of the arf's for sure)...silas

Hi .... this is my TF60 corsair. After 15 month it is finish.
Powered by ST90, Robart retract, standar Futaba set up, it also have operative gear door, hand made retract tail gear (to Dionisius all credits), modify muffler to work as real scale. Glassed with Water base polyurethane and paint with house satin latex paint ( Neo´s techniques). Weathering with some testors acrylic paint, and a lot of detail as rivet, panel lines, sliding canopy, modify tf cockpit....etc.
This is my first scale project...... thanks to everyone for your inspiration and generosity to share your tips and tricks, and your great work on your own models.

Hey F4u5 did the Corsiar ever have the Mil spec 16440 grey paint scheme? I know Quantico air station did have Corsairs. (I was at SOES Quantico when it closed in 76).
I see by your pic that the red stripe is in the insiginia so its after '47 but Korean War Corsairs were deep blue.
Just curious
