RE: Byron Corsair Build
Happy Canada Day & Happy 4th of July Holidays!
I hope everyone is having a great summer!
I got back in country and had a chance to fly my Corsair with my brother Todd who was up visiting from Montgomery, Alabama. It was 98F and humid here in Minneapolis and I begame very concerned about the performance of my Byrons Corsair.
Every time I pulled up elevator for a turn I found that the elevator response was VERY soft when pulling high speed manuevers after my 2nd flight of the day. I packed it up and took it home.
I found that the builder of my Corsair had used a 7" threaded rod between the servo and the pushrod. Since the Corsair configuration is to 'push' the rod for up elevator the threaded rod would buckle and I would only get a small protion of the servo force to the elevator.
I looked at replacing the entire push rod with a new carbon fibre rod but it looked messy to get it out. Instead I found a carbon fiber tube in my scrap bin that had an ID just larger than the diameter of the threaded rod. I cut it to length and then slathered the un threaded portion of the rod with Gorilla Glue and slid the tube over it. This will keep the rod from buckling but still leaves the junction (where the rod joins the pushrod) suseptable to bending/buckling.
To solve this I used (2) small diameter CF rods and slid them in to a piece of heat shrink and slid the assembly over the junction. The rods were placed 180 degrees from each other (on opposite sides of the rod) and I shrunk the tubing. The pushrod is solid now with no slop and no buckling!
What size servo have you guys used for your Corsair's surfaces?
When I bought this model it had Futaba S148's for the ailerons and a S9203 on the elevator. THis seems low.

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Thanks to this great build thread, I have finally finished my Byron Corsair. I had a chance to bring it to the field today and run the motor set the control surfaces, but it was a little gusty and did not get a chance to get her in the air. I have a DA-85 in it and a full cockpit & pilot. I had to put 2 pounds of lead in the nose to balance it out with a final weigh in of 30 pounds. I took a lot longer than I thought it would but definitely worth it. I used many of the build tips that Craig and others shared on this thread and I could not be happier with the end results. I looking forward to getting it in the air this week and will let you know how it went.

RE: Byron Corsair Build
I was able to get her up for her first flight(s) this evening and am very happy to report all went well. It tracked very well down the middle of the runway on roll out and came up nice and easy. A few clicks of up trim was all that was needed for hands off flight. I flew circuits of high level flight to get use to it and then slowed it down to test out the flaps. Absolutely no change in pitch with both 20 degree and 40 degree down flaps. It sounded great with the DA-85 and the custom JTEC muffler. It was really moving at 1/2 throttle and I not open her up to full throttle. That will have to wait until I get a little more time on it and ensure that I have all the bugs worked out. First landing was absolutely uneventful. Nice steep approach and flare to runway. The second flight went great as well, but came in a little hotter due to high idle on the new DA. It settled fine, but I needed to do a little zig zag to slow her down as it was approaching the end of the runway. I was surprised to find that one of the Byron wheel hub broke away from the rest of the rim. It was a nice smooth landing without any bounce, but the side pressure from the turns broke the plastic wheel hub. I am very happy with the flight characteristics of the plane and look forward to many many more flights!!
By the way, if anyone has a set of aluminum 5.25 inch wheels that they are willing to part with please let me know. I have a giants scale show this weekend and I would love to be able to fly her.

Mark,
Lose the Byron Wheels. They are not built for these loads.
The cheap solution is a pair of 5" DuBro wheels painted. If that is not enough I can either send you a set of replacement Byron wheels or a NEW set of Equinox 5" Aluminum bushed wheels.
See Photo # 5, #6, & #7 in the following post

Did some flying Saturday! I was doing fly-bys with a buddy's TF P-51D and one of the guys got this shot.
The only way I get pictures when I fly is I bring the camera, hand it to some one who may have an eye for composition, and teach him how to shoot it. Then I tell him not to worry about wasting electrons and shoot as often as possible. You stand a better chance of getting lucky!
It was a ball!

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Thanks to Scott, I was able to fly in our club Giant Scale event this weekend. Got a lot of great flights in over the weekend! The DA-85 really pulls the plane around with the Biela 3 blade prop. It lands much easier than my two Top Flight Giant Scale Mustangs. My son took a few nice pictures of it in-flight.
Scott - Great picture of your corsair!!

Mark,
I do love the way you fly!
Show us some pictures of the gear.
I found the Byron Corsair to be my favorite plane for crowd appeal, realistic flight, low, low strafing runs and killer landings on paved runways. It's so easy to do a perfect no-bounce wheel landing with those big flaps dropped to +40 degrees. Now I've got to try to see what a little more power with do! My old Q52 ran well Saturday as the temperature dropped to the mid 80's and the humidity down to 60 percent. I could almost keep up with the TF P51 with the DA50 in it.[sm=devious.gif]
My next Byron's Corsair has a Sach's 4.2 (70 cc) and should have a little more giddy-up!
Craig! How's your Corsair flying?
Best,
Scott

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Scott,
I have two TF P-51s. One with a DA-50 (25.5 pounds) and one with a DL-50 (24.5 pounds) and the Corsair (30 pounds) with the DA-85 will blow them both away at a little over 1/2 throttle. Your Sach's 4.3 should definetly give them a run for their money.

Had a great opportunity today. The Corsair that I modeled is at the Edmonton airport, so I had to go get some pics.
She is a beauty.

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Corsair is still flying strong.
Think I am up to 25 flights if not more. She flies good and is very rugged. Landings are improving, and most times I dont even get a bounce. It pays to cut two coils off the springs.
It is time for some much needed maintenance, as I have been flying the crap out of it. It does look good in the air.
Had my trusty Lancaster out on the weekend and got a few more flights in.

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Update on my Corsair with the DA-85. I now have about 20 or so flights on it and am loving it! I am using a Mejlic and Biela 24 x 12 Prop and the plane weighs in at about 29.5 lbs. Normal flying is at about 1/4 throttle and at full throttle it absolutely halls at about 150 MPH. I like fast, but full speed on this plane is scary fast. I wouldn't say that it is overpowered, but If anyone is thinking of powering theirs with the DA-85, I would recommend using a larger diameter propeller with less pitch. I am still new to the hobby, but my reasoning is that I would rather trade a little speed for greater thrust and greater throttle range. Feel free to weigh in if my newbie reasoning is flawed.

Mark,
Are you using the 24" (2) blade or (3) blade props?
The primary reason I would use my DA-85 would be to use my 26" Solo 3-blade ground adjustable pitch propellor. Larger diameter & 3 blades make use of the engine's power and I can set the pitch to slow it down but have the guts to climb out as needed.
Besides, It just LOOKS SO COOL!

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Scott,
Both the Biela and Mejzlik propellers that I am using are 3 blade props. Your 26" 3 blade should be perfect for the DA-85 and the Corsair. I will probably move up to a Biela 25 x 10 (3) blade. Mejzlik does not offer anything under a 12 pitch for their propellers over 24" in diameter. The Solo does look very nice. I can see one of those on my bird in the next year or so.
When do you think you will maiden your DA-85 powered Corsair?
