RE: Byron Corsair Build
Scott/77chickenhawk,
Thanks for the info on the Solo Prop! It looks as though the complete system would run about $440. I will have to add it to my ever expanding RC wish list.

RE: Byron Corsair Build
the hub's have only gone up about 40 bucks but the blades have almost doubled in price.. i payed 25 dollars each back when for the 24 inch blades, now they are 40 each... ouch....
tipping the prop will be a costly mistake.

Hawk,
Just thinking about it.
Breaking a blade on a conventional 3-blade prop is the price of the prop (any where from $65 to $150). Breaking a blade on the Solo prop is $45. That actually sounds cheaper.
When you factor in the trial & error in getting the right prop dia & pitch for your aircraft/engine combination you can easily buy more conventional props than you need. (I've done it myself.) It's not like you can return the conventional prop if its not right for your aircraft.
ALL,
I had the opportunity to fly again yesterday (1st flight since the August tent collapse in Fond du Lac, WI that smacked the fuse with a 30# circus tent pole) and the temperature (density altitude) made Old #29 fly like a champion! The old Q52 with the 20x10 prop picked up the 23# Corsair in less than 10 ft. It was spectacular! Even though it was so windy that few others would fly, the Byron's Corsair flew solidly. I made a lot of low & dirty fly-bys just to admire the flaps!
I also had a chance to fly my F4F.
Not many warm flying weekends left for us in Minnesota. The ice is coming!

Marvin,
I wish I had your flying weather.
We had 12" of wet, heavy snow Saturday after a beautiful 65 degree Friday.
It looks like its gonna stay for a while . . . (6 months!)
If you can't find the dimples. I balance mine at 5 1/4" back from the root LE (upside down) with the gear retracted and no fuel.

Just send me a PM with your address. I will send them to you in a tube. I never used them as I painted my Vorsair, Royal Navy (Canadian) colours.
Here are a few pics. It may take a few days before i get them sent. You can have them

RE: Byron Corsair Build
I wanted to ask as I just bought a Byron Corsair out of the buy/sell listings, with the intention of doing some minor work to it..mostly on the landing gear to make it look more scale.
No one seems to put the scale main gear doors on, is there a reason for that? Just curious..Im guessing its some sort of clearance issue with the landing gear or mains..
Also I see alot mentioned about the Earle Aune tailwheel but cant seem to find where to buy one if I wanted..
I guess I should also finish my Mustang before starting something else but...

I don't think Earl is selling his retracts any longer, or at least for the time being. You can build the tailwheel yourself though. Just do a search of this forum for scale Corsair tailwheel build and you will find several threads on the subject.

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Thanks,
I did see a thread on building a tailwheel and I may wind up going that route if it comes to it..Some of those guys do some beautiful work..
Was there ever a work around for the doors that anyone came up with? Im assuming its part gear (seems like most guys are using the robart 150), part scale/kit related..Seems like a pretty big miss to have to leave the doors off.

If you look over to the Top Flight F4U Group Build you can see DaddySam's build of the Earl Aune tailwheel.
I bought a couple for my Byrons Corsairs.
I'm looking to build doors for my F4U and I saw a great technique on the Not Another Corsair Thread for when the axles stick out.
Enjoy!

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Hi guys, it been quiet here for some times,
Scott, thanks to you I started the build of my Byron Corsair like last week or so. I couldn’t do it without the manual that you emailed me, thanks again, the cuts on the fuse are all made and F1, 2 and F3 are in the place along with retract rails. I built a scale tail wheel following the instruction on RCU. It came out nice, I have a pair of 150 Robart retracts that was included in the kit. The problem that I’m facing now is that, somehow the strut of the gear looks short to me although, the specification available on Robart’s site states 8 inches from pivot point to the axel and mine is the exact same measurement. The wheel axel won’t fall in the center of the wheel well. Is this normal and common? And further more by installing the gear and tire, I can’t have the gear doors lining up since the oleo is sticking higher than it’s suppose to be. I don’t know what to do with the doors; any help/advice would be nice.[8D]
Craig I would be happy like a kid if my Corsair comes out half as nice as yours. what are the size of the holes of the rivets/screws and spot welds? i can see few different sizes, can you tell us please.
Mike.

I saw my first Byron Corsair at the field yesterday. Best looking plane I ever saw. Just wonderful. Why and When did they stop making these planes?

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Byron sold out to Iron Bay Models. You can still buy some of their models (the Corsair included) through Iron Bay. I have to agree that it is one of the best looking and flying planes out there.

Mike,
The Byron Corsair has always had flaps. Some builders are intimidated by them and do not cut them out but the design was always with flaps.
I am getting my #2 Byron Corsair ready to fly while my #1 is under repair.
Have you started a project yet?
Scott

Mike,
I hope your Byron's F4U project is progressing!
I looked at all three (3) of my Byron Corsairs and they are all built without main gear doors to avoid the issue of the gear leg.
I have acquired some molded FG door material from the TF GS Corsair guys and I'm looking to use it on my rebuild of my #29 Corsair.
Happy Year of the Dragon!

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Scott,
Thanks for the tip on the doors, as for my Corsair its going very slow since i had to wait 5 months for my radial seven cyl engine, im taking my time,i want to do it as scale as possible with all panel lines and rivets, sliding canopy, folding wings, nav lights, operational cowl flaps and what ever else that there is, i have built my very scale tail wheel assembly from scratch thanks to some members here in RCU. if you get a chance i would love to see the Fg doors and see what you did with them.
Mike.

Another Byron's Corsair Kit is up on eBay!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BYRON-ORIGIN...item43af3a39ac
This one has NEW Robart Retracts, wheels & (2) engines; the Quadra Q50 and the Sachs 4.2 w/Powr-Prop.
I figure you can sell the engines seperately to reduce the investment!
Who's flying their Byron's Corsair this season?
