Thanks Chad,
Rack maybe if you finished the plane it might hit 70 lbs. No full body pilot, no full detailed cockpit , and no canopy. What are you thinking?[:'(]

Keep going Gibbs !!! Chad beat me to the punch. Prove him wrong, you know as well as I do that this going to be one kick*** beast once shes all done !!! When its all done and over, we'll see who the real idiot is, but, its pretty much a no brainer at this point. You know how they say "ignore the behavior, not the person" ? Well, in this case you can ignore the person if you like Just keep going on her, were all watching. Shes looking sweet !

Thanks 96,
I sanded all the putty off the the cowl scoops and used fiberglass cloth instead. It will be a little lighter plus they didn't want to stay tight in the front. The putty kept cracking just by sanding it. If it cracked then I can just imagine what it would do with the engine vibration. Now they are there to say. No more epoxy just glass cloth holding them on.

NCIS,
I just finished reading your entire forum and I have to say your build is looking great. I am currently in the process of building the Ziroli F4U Corsair and after reading this, I have to go back and change a few things. Currently I am working on the landing gear doors for both the main and the TW, but I also need to go back and change the hinging on the flaps. I used the large Robart hinge points, but I can't get one side to line up correctly. So I am going to rip out the hinge points and built my own hinges out of 1/8" ply.
Keep the post coming and I am really looking forward to seeing your first engine run video.

Thanks Doc,
I am going to use the same hinges as Sam is on his 110" CMP Corsair. They are ply also. I haven't even built my flaps or ailerons yet so I'll wait on that but when I do I'll post pic's. The only places I used the hinge points so far is the rudder. I will probably use them on the elevators also. At least they are all built. Everything for the fuse is done as far as building. When I epoxy in the tail feathers I finish up the planking and carve the fillet for under the rudder. Here are pic's of sams hinges.

Thanks for the info. It is going to make the hinging much easier. I tried to find hinges to use from places on the internet, but there is limited choices and most of them are VERY expensive. It always surprises me how much a small part cost for this hobby.

It is plain outrageous. I am having to buy my servos one at a time because they cost $120.00 each and the radio is another $629.00. This hobby with todays economy is making me more broke by the day. I find myself working on detailing instead of building more because I can't put little things like glue and epoxy before the families food. I am self employed and own apartment buildings and the squeeze is really hurting my tenants which in turn hurts me. It's funny how the government helps the banks but they won't help us small business people. I have been using carpenters glue throughout the build but can' substitute epoxy and Z-Poxy. I have been using regular fiberglasss resin that stinks to high heaven rather than not make parts I need. I need wood but thats high too. Enough whinning and back to work on these darn cowl scoops.
If you need canopy rails for your sliding canopy don't forget my ad on this forum, Canopy Rails for Warbirds. They are just $31.50 shipped to your door with everything you need. They work on all Warbirds with a sliding canopy. On our Corsairs they just need to be cut in half for the front and rear rails. Thay are 12" long.

RE: 1/4 Scale F4U-1A Don Smith Plans Build
FYI,
Barry looking good.I FINALLY talked to Darrell at Sierra and he actually had a TW Retract in stock. I'm glad to say its on its way. He did not however have a tail wheel. What size is yours? I thought it was 2.5 but not sure. I want to buy a cheap 2.5 (if thats the size) to get the TW mounted right. Darrell said he is "waiting" on more tail wheels so a cheap dubro will have to do until he gets them in. He also said he had 3 sets of mains done for the Don Smith but all were spoken for. He said he has only made two other pair and I guess yours are #1 or 2. Glad to know they work. I just have the fuse planked all but the bottom and then I will start on the tail feathers. Go ahead and put me down for a rail set. I will take a pair. Who did you order your cowl and original canopy from as I need them as well. I know Precision Kits has them listed where I purchased my kit from but I remember you saying the cowl was garbage and was wondering if you had any recommendations other than a 55 gal trash can
If I can figure how to work my Jesus Phone (Iphone) i will post some current pics.

Mine is a DuBro 2 3/4" for now but I will switch to a 2" when I'm ready to fly. Even though the cowl is junk it's your only alternative. I have a NIB Canopy if you want to order it with the canopy rails. I don't know what PCK is asking for them now but mine was $55.00 plus shipping when I got the good ones from Don. I also have a second one if you want them both in case of a goof up. I'm not using them because I get a custom cowl from Graham at Tiger Models with the aluminum frame and rivets for the F4U-5N that I'm building. Just go to my ad and make an offer for the rails even though thats a set price and I'll take $50.00 for the NIB Canopy and $40.00 for the almost NIB canopy.

I can tell you that my 152 inch Corsair weighed 96 pounds, for reference. Flew it for 4 years until MErlyn and I mid-aired with his 12 foot Ki-100....how fitting was that! Good luck on the Corsair.
Stay motivated, I'll be building another 13 footer next winter. Maybe we'll meet up at a fly-in and put 'em up together:

Jeff,
It's always a pleasure to have you post on my thread. I would love to meet you in person at some fly-in and I hope to have mine done by the spring of 2010. That was a beautiful and looks like a great flying Corsair.

Jeff they probably do but I haven't been there. I'll have to check into it and see. Post a pic of your Spitfire if you can. I'd love to see it. How long does it usually take for you to build one of the Monsters? Do you glass yours, custom exhausts, full cockpit's, sliding canopy, all the rest of the detailing like rivets, panel lines, and lights? It has been almost a year on my Corsair and I can't see the loght at the end of the tunnel. I do love the Detailing.I just finished with my cowl scoops for the turbo charger on the F4U-5N Corsair. It's sanded back down from primer after checking it out for pinholes and need of any final sanding on the scoops. I am happy with the scoops but the cowl need a lot of pinholes filled with Evercoat Easy Sand Putty and some seam sanding. Here it is on the plane. I also need to cut the carb velocity stack down some more so the prop hub is in the center. It was before I put the stack back on. It is forcing the cowl to elongate downward. The last picture is before hacking away on the cowl and with the stack off. It is in the center or very close in that pic.

Barry,
Sounds good. I see you are asking $20 for your rails. I was wondering if you would take $50 for both the rails and the USED canopy. I can just paypal your account if you would like. I have a retail biz and a UPS account. I can send you a call tag (UPS will come to your house and pick up the package) at no cost to you. All you have to do is box it up. I am intrested in the canopy b/cI might change my mind and have one of those Tiger models canopies built and I would be more interested in the used canopy for fitment purposes. Just let me know. Thanks! Josh

Josh,
I'll Take $60.00 for both. But thats just one canopy and the rails. I also have this cowl that I'm not using now. It already has the cooling flaps on it. I thow thqat in for $120.00. That is normally $84.00 from PCK and it's a Don Smith Cowling. Which means it's a good one.
