The corsair flew today and flew well. CG is at about 24% of cord or around 3.5 inches. Slightly forward of the 103 recommended in the newer manual. Takeoff was more scale and little trim was needed to bring it to level flight. Gear down, flaps down for landing caused little to no pitch change. Photos to follow.

In my manual it says 110mm but on the online manual i downloaded it says 130mm.
Anyway, Merry Christmas to all of you[color=#CC0000]

RE: KMP Corsair
Sorry, I thought the latest manual said 103. If it says 110 then I am forward of that mark by about 1/4 inch or 5 mm. 25% of cord is 3.8 inches + or -. The visual and "finger test" of a number of people came up with a point forward of the 5+ inches that the first manual recommends.
We had a lengthy discussion in this thread about where the CG needs to be but I can tell you from balancing and flying this one that it does well at 3 3/4" and 5 other experienced RC warbird pilots strongly suggested not flying it with the CG at 130 mm where I originally had it for the first flight attempt.
LDM-We have 12 month flying weather. You just have to start very early during the Summer months or get a major sunburn.

OK, there is obviously a various of manuals and recommendations of the CG. I will go ahead after my manual and place the CG as recommended at 110mm.
BTW, your dummy radial looks great lynn1130, got mine for about two weeks ago. Will start working on it now on my Christmas vacation. Wont get back to work until 11th January 2010

RE: KMP Corsair
Painted my dummy radial today. Well did 2 coats anyway. Did the first coat with Tamiya Chrome Silver then tried doing a watered down coat of flat black so some of the silver showed through. It looked ok, but without weathering the whole bird it would have looked out of place. So I coated it flat black and now I guess if it gets scratched or marked it will look somewhat real with the silver underneath.
I have been looking at pics of the radial engines in the Corsairs and some have the blue grey colour on the crankcase just behind the prop hub and others look black. Anyone know what they would have come out of the factory with?
Might leave it flat black otherwise will paint it some sort of grey colour.
Hope you all had a safe and happy xmas and new year.

I'm having a rough time with the flaps. I have no hard wood to screw the hinges into. I can see a block they installed inside the wheel well, but it's balsa.

RE: KMP Corsair
After i mounted the hinge screws i screwed them back out again and dropped in some thin CA in the holes. That have worked for me. I my self screw back the screws before the CA have completely dryed.
VeeAte. Do you got any pictures of your weathering job you have done?

RE: KMP Corsair
I havent done any weathering on the plane itself. I did mess around with weathering the dummy radial, but it wouldnt look right with the rest of the plane not weathered.
I will attempt weathering etc one day. Just not on such an expensive bird. Specially not the first time anyway.

I like my plane’s cars and wife looking factory new.
If I ever bum up the plane I may give weathering a go.
I am just finishing up my dummy radial, will post a photo soon.

RE: KMP Corsair
Nice job on the radial jj.
I like the braid for the ignition ring. That will show up nicely in the sunshine.
What brand of dummy radial is that? Has a lot more detail than the Top Flite one I have.

RE: KMP Corsair
The new F4U coming out this summer from KMP will have a 85" wingspan. IMAA qualified, you can put a Saito 450 in it! And if you think the 74" is nice,, this will be worth the wait.

RE: KMP Corsair
The 74" Corsair is the same as the first run, there weren't any changes. The 74 is manufactured by ESM and the new Corsair is made by KMP's new manufacturer. Bigger and better than before.
