Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
My Feedback: (8)
1. Yet another warbird that never fired a shot, in anger or otherwise.
2. This airplane was derived from another that it closely resembled. It carried extra crew, had a different purpose and completely different designation, so the plane it was derived from will NOT be the correct answer.
3. Only two were built and one still survives in a museum.
4. The airplane it was derived from evolved into a much more famous and long-lived warbird.
5. Cold War era.
6. While the project it was built for was a failure, it was not the fault of the airplane.
7. The example that did not survive was lost with fatal results.
8. The project involved unmanned reconnaissance.
9. After the fatal crash, this aircraft was replaced in the recon project by the B-52.
10. This aircraft was retired and placed in storage after only a bit over 100 hours of flight time.
11. This airplane's performance was outstanding even by today's standards.

We also have the Flying Heritage Collection up here. Last Summer, I got to see a FW190A and a Me109E flying around the pattern for us. Both are combat vets with their original German engines.

Across the runway from FHC is John Sessions' warbird collection/museum. Among others, he has a Mk.IX spit, a Tigercat, a Bearcat and a P-51B, all flown regularly. This is a great area for warbird buffs

Nope, not the good old DC-3. For some reason, I don't remember anyone other than the US or maybe England using the DC-3 operationally. Time for the next clue:
Name the plane time, this one being post WWI
1) Was flown by both sides in combat
2) Was radial engine powered
3) This plane was not used operationally after being captured by the opposite side

I think the next clue will help with your confusion.

4) Planes used operationally were delivered "fresh" from the manufacturer to both sides

And Johnny's up.
1) Was flown by both sides in combat The Buffalo was sold to the US, British, Dutch, Fins, and Belgians. The Fins aligned themselves with the Germans against the Russians
2) Was radial engine powered Wright R-1820-22 Cyclone
3) This plane was not used operationally after being captured by the opposite sides One was captured by the Germans, intact. It was never used being inferior to the 109. Those not destroyed by the Japanese were withdrawn to Australia and later shipped back to the US
4) Planes used operationally were delivered "fresh" from the manufacturer to both sides
It's performance in combat was so dismal against the Japanese Zero and Oscar that it was pulled from combat and used as a trainer by both the British and American military. Only the Fins had success with the Buffalo. One squadron claimed better than a 26:1 kill/loss ratio against the Russians early in the war. By late war, the Buffaloes were replaced by ME-109Gs
