What kind of servos is everyone using ?
I wanna keep the price of this bird down a bit since it isn't a high performance aerobat.

Jim,

I'm using 5645 Hitec on mine because I have them. I would use better servos on the elavators and ailerons. You can probably get by with less servo on the flaps. This is a big bird and I think it wouldn't take much to get some flutter on these birds....

Haven't heard what others are using on this plane. Metal gear servos are a must IMHO....

I decided to replace the not so scale exhaust pipes with ones I am fabricating from thin brass tubing.
I had to make a new mounting block on the cowl ring then I bent the tubing to the desired shape and then heated it with a torch till it was glowing red, and when it cooled it looks like hot header pipes..
A little more weathering with some black in the airbrush and I think they will look pretty good.

Jim, They look great. I cut mine down, painted them black inside and did some airbrush work on the outside to make them look worn. I had thought about doing the same thing you did but wasn't sure I will need extra weight up front. I just received my 3 bladed prop and spinner from Zinger. Wow what a set up. I'll take pics tonight and post tomorrow.

I am still waiting on robart to get my retracks. I hope they will get here in the next couple of weeks.....

This was VERY thin wall brass tubing and prolly weighs less than the full sized original pipes.

I am gonna try to retro fit a set of Hangar 9 retracts from a buddies P-47 he crashed a few months ago.
We'll see and I will post results.
I am actually taking pictures of all mods and I will be doing a build thread soon !

Great Jim, I'm very slow getting things done right now. Too many irons in the fire. As soon as the retracts come in I'll get going on it and get it done. I'll post some pics. Will enjoy seeing your build.....

Jim, Hangar 9 retracts? Will they hold up to the weight of this plane? I figure mine will be close to 20 lbs with smoke. I went with the heavy duty retracts from robart. If you get a chance to post a picture or two would be interested in seeing them. Good luck on the build.
Hope my retracts come in soon. Getting anxious to get this bird in the air.

What is that FG cup for that you made ?

Here is a pic with the H-9 retract semi fitted in the wing.
A little surgery on the mounting area and an access door for the servo is all that is needed !
These are gonna work just fine !

Jim,

I'm using 4.5 inch wheels on this bird. Decided to go a little more towards scale look. I made the FG well pans to accept these larger wheels. As soon as the retracks come in I'll finish up the wings. It shouldn't take too much longer to get it done once the retracks are fitted. Will you have enough height on the plane for your prop with H9's. They look like they are shorter than the wire that came with the kit.

Most of the guys I hear are using 3/4 inch up and down elevator and 1/2 inch on the alerons. I''m *****g on the rudder. Most important is going to be the CG on this bird. My all up weight will be close to 20 lbs with smoke..... HD robart retracks and gear add up. Double battery set up plus one on engine and one on smoke system.....I''m not familiar with those JR servos but they should be metal geared and High torque.

You are right. A bud and I were just talking about TBM servos going on sale. The deal can''t be beat. We hope to get in on a set or two at those prices. Jr''s will be fine, I always worry about plastic gears. Had a bad experience on my first plane...

You can run either voltage, just expect lower torque and slower speeds at 4.8v.
For a warbird these will be great, but I wouldn't use them on an aerobat.
Would probably go with the HD 9150MG (btw, Hobbycity.com has these for $33.80.... AND TBM will match that !

What CG are you using on this bird? I still am waiting on Robarts to come in. Saw where they charged my account so I expect them to ship soon. I'm down to finishing up on the wheel well and am done with it.

Hi Guys,

I thought that I'd put in my 2 cents here, as I just got a set of the HD2250A servos from TBM. The servos seem to be pretty strong, but I was disappointed at the servo leads used. The leads appear to only be about 26ga and I would have expected at least 24 ga or better yet, 22ga, considering the current required for a torque rating of 165 in-oz @ 6v. It also makes the servo really cheap looking...Yeah I know, they are cheap servos, but how much extra would the heavier wire have cost? The plastic servo arms are a little short for my taste, and TBM suggests on their web site that metal arms should be used, but don't say which ones to use. I've tried Futaba, Hitec and JR arms and none of them seem to fit. I'll be trying these servos in a profile test plane soon and it will be interesting to see how they perform in the air. If anyone else has gotten their hands on these servos I'd like to hear about it. I was going to use them in a Mustang and a Zero that I have in the works, but I'd like to get a feel for their performance before I commit them to an airframe that I have a lot of building time in.

Bought these servos but am using them in another plane. However the JR arms are what fit these. I've purhcased these at TBM when they went on sale and got 10 of them. Bought the 1.5 inch arms and they fit fine. Also very disappointed in the leads used on this servo. TBM speaks highly of them so we'll see what they do in real life. May try to fly my Giant Stinger this weekend.

Still waiting on my robarts.. Slow is not quite the right adjective but anyway it's been way too long of a wait. I got an email saying they are no longer going to ship the 730's and will replace my order with a set of 630's. We'll see.......

Does anyone have any suggestions for the CG on this plane?????

I too got in on the 10 servo deal; it was too good to pass up. I just hope that the servos live up to their billing. The output shaft on the HD2250A is definitely larger than the Futaba or HiTec‘s shaft. I tried some Airwild JR arms that I had and they wouldn’t go on. The MPI arms that clamp on the output shaft look like they might work though. MC, what brand JR arms did you use?
Since I had some 12” 22ga Futaba servo leads on hand, I decided to convert 4 of the HD220A servos over to the heavier leads. Note: You will definitely need a low wattage pencil type soldering iron with a fine tip. It wasn’t too difficult, as I was able to do a credible job by hand on the first one, but since I had potentially 9 more to change I decided to make a simple jig to do the others. If anyone is interested, I’ll try to post pictures and a drawing of the jig. The jig definitely makes the process easier. It occurs to me that there is an added benefit to doing this; as you can now make the servo lead any length that you want, there by eliminating one connection and its associated voltage drop!
(More delivered voltage = more power.)

Great idea on the servo leads. I am interested in your jig. I have already installed these servos on my Giant Stinger so won't need it for that but will consider adding on to the other servos. I too hope they hold up.
