RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Is that a typo or are you actually using 3(three) 6volt Nimh packs in your plane?
|
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Nope, no typo. Redundant receiver switches both controlling one pack and one pack for the on-board glow.
|
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
I'll be using a two-stroke OS 160. Do you think I'll need an on-board glow? If not, will one 6 volt pack work if I use high enoughamps? 2000-2500 maybe more?
|
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Me personally, I use onboard glow on ANY glow motor in a plane this size or larger. Sounds like your trying to keep weight to a bare minimum. Thats not really necessary. Ive had 3 and all of them weighed 16 pounds each(all were built electric). The 2nd one had 3 6v nimh batts in it...two for redundent rx power and 1 for a matchbox device powering the 4 flaps servos. I built the 3rd one with only 2 6v nimhs...one for rx and one for the matchbox. All of them flew quite well at 16+ pounds without bad habits.

RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Thanks! Why do you need redundant batteries? Wouldn't one with the proper voltage and amps be sufficient? Also, are you're ailerons also set up as flaps and vice versa. I want to keep mine as simple as possible, just using the ailerons for ailerons and the flaps for flaps. The airbrakes also confuse me, when would you use those? sorry for all the questions but this is my first large scale plane. Is there any literature available that would explain how to set up a this size. The manual from CMP has a lot to be desired. Any information would be appreciated.

RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
No the ailerons were not tied into the flaps at all. Definitely not wanted or needed when the plane already has flaps. The airbrakes as you call them(they are really radiator cooling vents on the real plane) are not needed for any flight condition in an r/c plane. I hooked them up separately from the flaps and used completely separate servos assigned to a different switch just to have them available. I never once used them. If I were to build yet another one, Id simply make those parts fixed in position.
I used redundant batteries for piece of mind. There are a considerable amount of servos in this plane and I simply didnt want to risk a brown out scenario(where the radio loses contact with the rx due to low voltage to the rx) |
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
If you lose a switch on a single battery system, which is the most common point of failure, you lose the plane. With redundant switches and batteries there is a fail safe that will allow you to bring the plane back home.
|
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Got it! Are the batteries plugged into seperate channels in the receiver?I assume each one has it's own on/off switch. I havea Spektrum DX8 transmitter/receiver with telemetry. Haven'tused it yet but I believeit will monitor receiver pack voltage.

RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
If you want to run redundant batteries, each one would need a separate on/off switch.
The 2nd battery w/ on-off switch could be run through any other channel even if it has servos running off of it using a y-harness, though some might recommend you not do that and use an open channel. |
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
There are also on/off switches that failsafe to ON, so even if the switch fails, you wont lose battery power even when running only one rx battery. This is what I used on the 3rd one I built

RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Good advice! Like wearing a belt and suspenders at the same time.

RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
ORIGINAL: irocbsa For the record and future reference, my finished plane came in 14 lbs dry. The engine is an OS200, it has a cockpit kit from Ty's planes complete with pilot, onboard glow, E-Flite 120 sized retracts, , 3 6V 2000mah NiMH packs, and one of Ty's aluminum spinners. |
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
What other gas enLDgines have been used? I'm thinking of a DLE30 or MLD35 engine. Is the 35 too much engine for this plane? Also, how did the e-Flite retracts fit?
|
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
E-Flites fit with very few modifications. I raked them forward slightly and that was about the only mod I made.

RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
i ordered a set of the electric retracts today. Should be an easy install and with the bf109 included strut covers, it should look very scale.
|
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Which ones are you using? Any degree offset? Are you going to use OLEO struts?, Thanks, Messer
|
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
I used the 85 degree set and bought 5.25" oleo struts from Lado (magnumrc.com). They use 5mm pins which are a direct fit to the E-Flites.
I had to trim up the provided strut covers because I used the plastic wheel wells that came with the kit. If you don't use those plastic inserts you will be able to run larger wheels and most likely use the strut covers as well without trimming them. It will give a more scale look, but not one that I was willing to put that much time into. |
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Messer,
I just finished the build on a buddies 109. As for the inboard speed brakes, I set them up as a flap only. I mounted a control horn inside with a control wire to hold it in place and mounted the bottom half to the servo. I also set up the outer flaps and have them on a seperate switch so I actually have 2 sets of working flaps on the plane. We also are using a crrc 40 gaser on this plane and it flew great. We are also using a JR 12x and rx with dual battery. |
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Tom
I just finished the build on my buddies CMP 109 and I installed a CRRC 40 gaser on it and it balanced out perfect with no weight added. The CRRC 40 is the engine that comes in a kit and we put it together (about 30 min build). Very inexpensive way to have a robust 40cc gaser. If you get one just make sure it has the new upgraded ignition. ours were the older version but the factory exchanged it our with no questions. |
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
I used Sierra retracts and they dropped in perfect. They are also very hearty and can probably take any carrier landing that might happen. lol
|
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
well I poped for one CMP Bf 109 yesterday.. can't wait till it gets here. :D then comes the big time bash.
so I'll see if I can make it look better then any modelsNCIS owns lol. |
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Please do not use the included black spinner. It is very fragile. TY here offers them I think, and, Dave platt spinners fit up just fine.
|
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
just finished reading all 70 pages, so I will be getting one of ty's spinners. thanks for the info. I'm still AMAZED how well it flies with the little OS 108! thats just crazy! now I'm definitly not worried about using my DLE20 w/ a 17 or 18x8 3-blade prop.big ole' grin on my face now :D</p> |
