Default buggy to truggy

hey everyone, i've been reading around the forum for a month or so now and decided to get the tornado xp. i havent seen this addressed yet so i thought i'd ask, has anyone changed the 2 speed in the xp to a one speed. i'm converting it to a truggy and dont want to deal with the constant stripping of the spur gear. also, can anyone suggest a good gear ratio to go with to compensate for the bigger tires (nitro rustler). i'm aiming for better low end acceleration to be able to burn my brothers rustler off the line. any help or suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

15Tooth clutch bell should get you the low end you want.

This is from chubbysuncle from another thread Hope it helps. Looks like it will have to be a single speed only.

Are you talking Tornado XL? If so I don't know if there's a 2 speed clutchbell available that will fit. I believe that for the single speeds an HPI clutchbell will work. I will do a test fit on the Volcano next time the engine is out but the 18 t spare that came with my Savage looks like a perfect fit. FYI the #'s are HPI A990 for 15t and A993 18t. Those are standard bells. The HD racing bells are 13t #77103, 14t #77104, 15t #77105, 16t #77106, 17t #77107, 18t #77108, 19t #77109 and 20t #77110. These are start outta the Savage parts list. Single speed only!

OK clutch spring broke on the Volcano 2nite....SO....18 tooth HPI clutchbell just fits. I believe that this has been posted before but I can verify! . Bell does rub upper support a little but it works. The truck flies! Check the vid thread!

What I don't understand is why you'd buy the tornado if your goal was a truggy...isn't the truck basically a truggy, or does it still maintain the buggy's low travel suspension???

Yes, you can use the single speed xl transmission. Then do what my first post indicated. Sorry for the confusion, I thought I worded it differently. Not sure about the original, the ones that chubbysuncle listed should work. Good luck. Sounds like a cool idea, and why not do it.

Harry, Thank you for finally answering that question. I think at one time or another, I've asked it in different words in different threads about 2 or 3 times (about the tranny). Not to be like some who asked a bunch of times at once, but spread out when I didn't get an answer...do you need a whole new set-up, or do you just change the shaft and gears?

i understand that a truggy is the best of a truck and buggy. it has the offroad capabilites of a truck, but the handling of a buggy. i thought it would be easier to put on some bigger wheels and tires to increase the offroad capabilities, but after driving the buggy i dont really need the second gear, so i think the single speed will help with the acceleration off road.... i think.

Yeah just buy the single gear set for the xl.
http://redcatracing.com/itemdetail_p...p?partno=05126

That's part number 05126.

It'll be a direct swap. And then do what the others guys are saying and buy one of those hpi racing clutchbells.

The less teeth the more acceleration you will get.
Good luck.

You don't need to spend the extra $ for the racing bells. My Sav X came with the 15t Heavy Duty bell and an extra 18t HD bell. The 18t is the largest # of tooth bell you can install. The 15 t makes the Volcano just fly off the line! If that .18 had more guts and the diffs could handle it, I think it could pull the front wheels! ( well almost!) The aluminum exhaust also makes a big difference in low end power. I cut out the baffle in the old stock exhaust and tried it. Way lounder then the alum and no low end power. Top end showed an increase. I put the Alum back on and there is a remarkable difference. Also the HPI clutchbells are a direct fit. No modifications are needed.
Here's the part #'s for the heavy duty bells they may be cheaper but work just great:
a989-----14t
a990-----15t
a991-----16t
a992-----17t
a993-----18t
I never tried a 14t but there should be enough adjustment for it to work. I do know for sure the 15t thru 18t WILL work on the single speed Volcano STX.
Yes I checked and they are cheaper. To search Tower or Hobbytown just add HPI to the beginning of each # in the search window( HPIA991).

I've been pondering the thought of a truggy too. Been looking at the tornado bb, maybe i can wait for christmas, (I'm really cheap).
Speaking of being cheap, does anyone know a good site where you can get cheap wheels and tires?

Check Ebay.. One of the guys with the on- road cars got some really cool wheels (4) for $5. You can paint them too with that new plastic paint.
