Default My sons first nitro!

My son had a highly modded electric stampede and he wanted a nitro. I said I would sell his Stampede on ebay and buy him his first nitro truck. Well after looking at alot of brands I did not want to spend a ton of money on a name brand. After doing alot of research I ended up with a Redcat Tsunami. I was leaning twards the CEN MG16 or the Tremor xtk but I got a unbelievable deal on the Tsunami. Not expecting much of it I was very surprised once I received it. The quality is alot better than expected and the Taiwan cxp.18 engine has to be one of the best running engines I have had to tune. No kidding! I know it sounds odd but the motor runs very smooth and tuning was a snap. Once I fueled the tank I primed the line and 2 pulls it was purring. I broke it in and the power is very good and getting better. I would have to say the speed so far is in the mid 40mph range. The only thing I had to do was put thicker shock oil and some minor adjustments. Its not quite hobby grade but its damn near close. They did alot of right things when building it. Steel axles and drive shafts, ball bearings throughout, shock towers and body mounts look very strong and electronics respond well.. The best thing is the motor. Time will only tell how it holds up. Here are some pics.

Ok I didnt want to stick my foot in my mouth about the speed so today I hooked up the gps to my sons Tsunami. After some final tuning I wanted to see what this thing really does. The first few runs I was only getting about 36mph. I noticed it was shifting way too soon and when it hit second it would bog down. I guess it was not in its power band once it shifted. I ended up getting the shift point right after about 5 runs. Top speed was 39.2mph. Alot better but still running rich. I leaned it out and did 2 runs and got 41.4mph but the temps were really getting high. It ran 41.4mph on 20% nitro 10% oil. Outside temps are about 92 degrees and truck was running at 280 so I shut it down. Not 45mph but a respectable 41mph. I will richen it back up so his max speed will be around 37mph. So yes a redcat tsunami can do over 40mph.

i saw the way that guy bashed you in the stadium truck thread, it will definately go over 40, only thing is the gearing, its too high geared. i put a 13/18 clutch bell in mine.

Clermont is going to send me a 13/18. Hopefully this will help keep the motor cooler also. What I am experencing is that I can get it down to about 240-250 on road but as soon as you get it in grass and put a load on the motor it will shoot up to 280+. I think the gearing has a big part to do with high engine temps. But as it sits it will do over 40 but its sluggish off the line. I know the 13/18 will give me tons more low end and I will lose top speed but thats ok. How often do you need to go over 40mph unless your racing a Jato.

Glad to hear your havin fun with the new truggy. Defiantly put the 13 and 18 bell in. I have the xp buggy with the 13/18 mod and love it. It runs great, takes off like a bat out of hell. When installing the 13 and 18 don't use the needle bearings it is junk( my opinion) I used 3 bearings ( 5x8mm) and just staked them inside the bell and it works great.
I also run a little hotter in the grass , mine hits 260 to 280 all the time. It still has lots of compression and is running awesome. Get the OS a3 plug from Dennis (clearmont motor sports) it will be even easier to tune.

Later bro, Fong[8D]

Is that all you used is 3 bearings, stock washers and screw. It pretty much consistantly runs about 280 unless I really richen it up but then its a total dog. Im hopeing the 280 wont kill it quickly. I cant wait for the 13/18 bell. I bet it will really wake it up. Were your clutch shoes a white plastic?

I use the Hpi racing clutch [link]http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLW03&P=M[/link]
Yes I use 3 bearings, 1 of the big stock washers and both of the small ones.
You will have to make your pilot shaft alittle longer by adding a 1/8 to 1/4 piece of a tension pin.
You can find the tension pin at a Home Depot or something like that. The tension pin just has to fit inside the bearings not to tight.
So you will put the 3 bearings on then the 13/18 bell ,your small piece of tension pin, big washer then small washer, then locktite the allen screw in.
After you are finished make sure your bell spins freely and then you should be all set.
Ehroof has the same set up in his tsunami. Tension pin and the bearings. If your have any probs fell free to ask. Ehroof will be able to help out alittle more. I am not very good at explaining things online.
Once you get it you will not be disappointed. GOOD LUCK

Later , Fong[8D] feel free to email me if you have any probs [email protected]

Ehroof! lookin for a good header and exhaust for my buggy. I am going to make an order with Clermont soon.

I want to put a new exhaust on. Lost one of my allen screws that holds the header on. So I put something else in there for the time being and I know I screwed up the threads in my stock header. LOL

hpi or traxxas header (rs4 hpi) and since you got the buggy with the low gearing, get the associated rpm pipe
