Spad3d Questions
I am a spad noobie and i am building the spad3d. I have know experience with landing an taking off with a plane. But i can fly my cub if someone getsit in the air. Also i can fly my wingwarrior whick is a flying wing. Ihave mastered that. Could i teach myself with the 3d. It seems pretty durable and looks stable. Also if anybody has crashed these tell me how it turned out. They are really cheap so it should be easy to fix. And i know some will tell me to get an instructor but i live to farm out into the country(46acres) and i dont have enough money to buy a sim(i'm 14). Thanks

No they are not stable, but you can cartwheel, pile drive, take out fellow fliers airplanes and just get really good at crashing without having to worry about building a new one. When it comes time to build a new one, a couple hours and $6 will have you back crashing again in no time!

RE: Spad3d Questions
So you say it is not a stable plane.Does the the wingwarrior(flying wing 4ft) have about the same hardness? And you say they are durable that is great. I am building one now all i need to do is get the engine from ebay. Can't i move the CG for or aft a bit to help is flight?

Throttle back, throttle back throttle back, throttle back. I think it can be done, if you throttle back and take it easy. If you hammer the throttle, you will be all over the sky with little chance of success and extreamly dangerous.

RE: Spad3d Questions
Go as slow as you can while keeping it in the sky. I am an optomist like yourself here's my story. Bought a slo poke had an instructor fly with mee first time out. Flew 2.5 more times myself (3 takeoffs, two landings and 1 collision with a tree). Bought a dazzler and had the instructor fly it. Went back out .5 flights (1 takeoff and 1faceplant on final). Built a tufflight and never flew it consistently. I then built a spa3d and it never flew right. I then built #2 and wow with dual rates and some expo, it was great. It does'nt right itself like a trainer but set up slightly nose heavy it was verry docile. I always felt comfortable flying it and eventually inched the CG back to 7" and it hovered itself. #2 is now retired and #3 is almost done and I'm sure I'll feel the same way about her. The moral of the story is I was'nt ever afraid to fly it and that's probably why I flew it so well.
If you are not afraid to fly/crash it, hell yeah build one. You are gonna crash no matter what you fly. You might as well crash a spad.
As you can see, my opinion on the SPA3D is totally bias. I will always have one and recommend them wholeheartedly.

RE: Spad3d Questions
Kyle,
You will love the way the Spad3d flies after you get the set-up right (ailerons reflexed upward 1/8 to 1/4 in. above the bottom of the rail, c.g. as per plans). Its easy to change engines on these planes, so you may want to consider a broader range of powerplants for you 1st flights. I've flown them with engines from .28 to .45. With some of the smaller engines you may not have quite enough oomph to hover, but they will harrier, flatspin, snaproll, tight loop etc, fantastic. Any ball bearing engine over .36 should hover the plane (any plain bearing/bushing .40 or so should also), but that need not be of much concern to you at this point. The airplane will not feel under powered to you no matter what engine you put on it. You'll need to throttle back regardless (except for vertical manuvers) to get the feel of what this plane is all about. Enjoy!

RE: Spad3d Questions
I've got the spad 3D with an LA40, it flies fine with an 11x3 apc. It has kind of been the latest craze at our club, most are putting .46 bearing engines on them, but the .40 will let you putt around, harrier, and will pull out of a hover with the 11x3. It is a very durable plane to say the least, I nosed mine into the asphalt, broke a prop and an engine mount, no big deal. Not as much fun to fly as some of my other planes, but it dosen't hurt as much when you take a dirt nap. I would suggest putting a spinner on it, any cheap one will do, it will cut down on the broken props.

If you look hard enough, you'll find it and probably for free.
Here is a pic of #2 which was just retired. If you like this, wait till you see #3

RE: Spad3d Questions
Actually, I bought mine in 4x8' sheets. It was virgin coro I cut the flames. I have heard nothing but good things about the TT pro motors. You can get one new for $85-89 if it's in good shape and was broken in properly, $60 might be a fair deal. I think you are going in the right direction with the .46 BB engines.

Places to get free coroplast:
1. Gas stations
2. Convience stores
3. Tobacco shops
4. Liquor stores
5. After election sign clean up
6. Fast food places
I've also heard a story from a friend who called his local Coca-Cola distributer and explained what he built from coroplast...and told them it would be great free advertising at the flying field...this stratagy netted him 40 free sheets of coro pre-printed with the Coca-Cola logo.
If you haven't seen this page yet, here are some great examples of airplanes made from free coro:

RE: Spad3d Questions
kyle,
I think radical rc was where I saw the pro .46 for $84.99. Also, you can get a GMS .47 delivered to your door for $75 with a tower muffler at www.gmsengines.com. That will probably be your least expensive route.
