Cub,with retractable gear in floats,take a look
Thanks guys,
I did not realize the front wheels did not steer the aircraft. I did not know they were just a caster set up. That makes it much less complicated....lol. Now I think I will be able to make a set for my Beaver this winter. I am now worried about the shimmy problem that even fullsize pilots have. I would like to be able to take off and land on a smooth grass runway with these wheels. I will certainly post when I make my attempt at building and using these amphib floats. Any other suggestions are very welcome from my end.
Thanks again

Clscale
Hey Fred are you gonna do a set of those for your Ukie float Cub? Are they still doing the scale contest in Oregon. Amphip's would not be scale on a J-3 but you could convert your Hanger Nine to a Super Cub.
I can see it now take off from the ditch, extrend gear, shoot a touch and go on the hard ground section, retract and land back in the ditch. Man, think of the points.

I have drawn up a CAD drawing for the main gear retracts, but haven't drawin up the nose gear retracts yet. The main gear retract is based upon the robart retractable tailwheel design and will use a normal retract servo.
Hopefully I can design a nosegear unit soon and maybe build a set to test out on the concrete first.
The NW regionals doesn't have a float pond this year (urg) but maybe sometime in the future I will have a set of retracts in a set of floats for the cub or some other plane. The grass at the pond in oregon was pretty rough on our floats.
Happy landings,
Fred Cronenwett

After slightly modifying nose gear everything works great. Real eye catchers at the field. Nose gear retracts into float with no problems.

What did you have to do to the front gear? I will be making a set of amphib floats this winter and could use all the help and guidance I could get. Have you used the wheels to take off and land on grass or pavement? If so have you experienced any shimmy problems on the front wheels? Can you post close up photos of the main and front gear structures?
Thanks

No shimmy problems, and they fly great off of grass runways. I can't give out any pics right now due to technical difs, but hopefully things will be good to go in a couple of weeks.

Jason--
Good report. I'll plan to add amphib floats some day.
Fred--
The mains are based on a Robart tailwheel retract? That will be a good go-by, too.
John--

Points, schmoints. I want to see jaws drop!

I ran into this message in the Forum at
The Seaplane Pilot's Association
http://www.seaplanes.org/
regarding shimmy on amphibious floats:
and another pilot goes on to say:
Evidently there is a "steering damper"associated with the bow wheels. Older BMW motorcycles have a friction damper on the front forks that is effective.
FWIW, let's go from here... IMO, unrestrained caster wheels are not a way to go.

regarding shimmy on amphibious floats:
I ran the EDO operation that manufacture the 2790 floats and I am sure I can talk you through the problems with your nose gear shimmy. This float has an excellent hose anti shimmy system and I am sure it will be easy to correct the problem.
new tires and disembling and cleanning and ajusting the tension on my shimmy damper/blocks corrected it.
It sounds like you and I have differant shimmy dampers, mine are a friction block/ clamp arrangement. On yours I would rebuild and try a heaver oil. If that doesn't work try a heaver oil.
