I once had a similar problem. Proping down helped but did not cure it. I finally swapped out ESC's as you did and it worked. Maybe soon I just get a fully programable BL ESC

What are you using? Batteries? Servo? If you are running a 700 series motor, yes, you will have to get rid of the stock crap that came with your boat.

A nice setup would be 2 6-cell batteries...
