Default Comments on this Aqua Jet Setup

Well, I'm making the final decisions on my Aqua Jet purchase. FINALLY decided on the Extreme but I've been unsure about the charger, the number of cells to run (12 or 16), and the size sport packs (3300 or 3800). First RC boat (and really RC experience in 10 plus years) so it has been difficult to understand how each setup would perform without actually seeing the difference in speed certain setups would give and what each setups effect on the boat is. Thanks to all those that have given me advice. Time to make a decision for better or for worse.

Looks like it probably will be the following:
- Aqua Jet Extreme
- Two IB3800 mAh 8 cell 9.6 volt Sport Battery Packs
- Duratrax Intellipeak twin pulse charger
- (do you need to purchase things like an extra prop?)
- I thought about running 14 cells but the 8 cell packs at offshoreeletronics.com are only $1.00 more per pack.

The other setup I was considering was:
- Aqua Jet Extreme
- Offshore combo pack - Dynamite Twin Peak Charger and (2) Two 6cell 7.2 Volt NiMH IB3800mah Sport Packs

Any pros and cons about either setup are appreciated before I pull the trigger on this purchase.

Thanks,
Chris

As far as the setup goes, I think I will be biting the bullet and paying the extra $$$ for a MRC Super Brain 977 since it seems the Duratraz Intellipakeak twin pulse charger isn't "technically" made to charge two 8 cell. batteries at once.

Still hoping for some comments on the setup described above.

In a boat, on water and without obstructions (Like trees), you want speed and handling. Two 6-Cell packs just won't cut it. Go as big as you can in the beginning and you will be MUCH happier.

I highly recommend the IB3800 Cells. I have a super brain 977 and do charge my twin 8-cell IB3800 packs (Self made packs). The combo works great (977 and 2 8-cell IB3800 Packs). At some point, you may want an extra prop if you plan to launch/retrieve from very shallow banks (If you don't step in the water). The xtreme comes with a carbonfiber prop, so it is WAY better than stock. The plastic stock & carbon fiber prop are fairly easy to nick if going through mud with any shells or rocks, so buy one if you want one. They can get chewed up, but I have not ever shattered one.

I bought the Aquajet 775 last fall (After selling my Nitro Kyosho Jetstream 1000) and in the spring will have added all of the Xtreme upgrades anyway (If I don't go brushless). Steven, the owner over at Offshore Electrics frequents these forums and is a great resource on the boats in general. If you email him, he always responds.

P.S. The Superbrain 977 can operate from 120v house AND 12v auto, so you can charge at home or on the go (And has Lipo ability).

Fortunately, the lake we live on is completely sand bottom and no plants (it was man made. . . dub out for sand when they built an nearby overpass and thereafter built subdivion houses around it). Hopefully the prop will last a while but I may purchase an extra one just in case (are they easy to pull off and on?).

Picking the charger has been the only hold up to ordering the boat. I thought the super brain 977 may be extra helpful for me as a beginner since it has the LCD and tell me what is going on. About how long does it take to charge your 3800's with the 977?

What made you get the 775 originally? Were you unsatisfied with the speed of the 775 and thus decided to upgrade or did you just figure more speed is better.

Thanks for mentioning the 977 can operate from the house because that is exactly when my charging will be done. I had a few other make some recommendations only to find out that the chargers were DC only (in fairness to them, I didn't mention that AC was a requirement).

Don`t even think about the charger, sooner or lather you will want 8 cell packs for your Aqua jet and you would be selling your Intellipeak or your Dynamite to buy the Super Brain 977. And The charge rate of those chargers are fixed at 3.5A and at 1A or 4A. The 977 charge rate is from 0.2A to 5.0A in 0.1 increments so you can charge also`AA or AAA Batteries and you can charge your IB3800 packs in less time and in a better way than those chargers. Also The Super brain 977 is very use friendly, i`m very happy with mine even though i can only put 7 cell packs on my Twin storm.
Remember, sometimes the cheaper can get more expensive.

I forgot about the charge time. First, i thought that i was going to charge a pair of IB3800 in 30 minutes with the 977, but is taking me about 40 minutes because the packs are getting about 4350 mah instead of 3800 mah, great packs!

Thanks. I have decided to order the Super Brain 977. User friendly is a plus for me, and I also ordered two 8 cell packs from Offshoreelectronics so the 977 is a good fit.

I'm not to familiar with charging batteries, but is getting 4350 instead of 3800 over charging the batteries? Isn't the charger supposed to have a safety for this?

If they are good batteries you will always get more mah than the batteries are rated for. No it is not over charging them.

What setting are you using? I've got a Pulsar Sport and even thought it's rated at 8 cells max - you have the problem of using say an external 15A power supply not giving the full 15A as more cells are charging - like 7 cells will have it imput at about 13.5 - 14A. So if I try say 8 cells that are getting upwards of 1.5 - 1.75Amps per cell it brings down the charging amps say from 5A down to 4 amps - does the brain977 do that also?

We have not charged 8 cell packs, but with the 7 cell IB3800 packs always stays at 5 amp both packs when charging, only if the electricity of the house is fluctuating it will drop to 4.5 amps.
I think the Super Brain 977 has a good power supply even though it`s rated at only 10 amps.

lawtyger, don`t worry about overcharging the batteries, each pack will stop when its fully charged no matter if the other is still charging.
