if you have a choice use the lowest (around 8 usually)
brushless motors/esc,s will heat up quickly with no load, they dont like it and its not good for them

Heres a couple of pics. Still incomplete. The red is the before where i had to repair the hull. Decided to change the color. I still need to paint something on it. Ill see what ideas i can come up with. It was Red. I put 2 coats white, 2 coats Sun yellow and 2 coats clear. The servo is a digital HS 5245

your rite peter the guys running the ul-1 motors use 4s, for racing they use a 42 x 55 prop, fairly sure its a grimracer prop.
and i agree pranther 215 is to big for that motor, 438 or 440 would be a good start
did see a guy useing around a 638 on a vs1 with a ul-1 motor 4s 5200s,think he was getting low 40s with about 10 minute run time, will try and check that out later and report back

scott
Scott,
We run a converted VS-1 with the UL-1 motor, Flightmax 4s, 5000mAh pack, 120A ESC and 42x55 Grimracer prop with excellent results. No overheating but still good speed at 11 degree ESC timing. I have heard also that a 640/642 work but that you should watch temps. I've never had much luck with Prather props either on FE or nitro.
JMHO,
Pete

Hey Pete,
If i run on 3S until my 4S batteries come in how much speed am i losing? Is it even worth putting in the water. Im not racing or anything. If i could get 30MPH it would be fine until the 4S batteries arrive. I did order a 438 Octura prop. 100 Amp esc and UL-1 Motor. Not sure how to set 11 degrees of timing. Ill read my esc directions. Thanks

thanks pete
the prather 215 is nearly the same as a 640 but with very little tongue, i like the prather 215 and 220 i have used them a lot but you get a lot more choice with the octura
pete do you know were your lower is set at ?. going to run mine to day for the first time
my setup is centre of prop 4 mm up from sponson bottom and 0 angle

brad if your using the ul-1 esc the timing on that is fixed at around 11 deg from factory,it is set for the ul-1 motor

Thanks for the info Pete. Im using the Hobby Wing Pro 100 Amp ESC. I need to read the directions for changing the timing. I have the X438 coming and the Prather 215 is here. I may try thrm both just for comparison. Let you guys know how it goes. I just started building the box. Hope to finish it in a couple of days.

well just got back from my maiden voyage of the vs1, my mate got a bit of footage will try and get it tonight
we have a cyclone sitting of the coast and the wind and the new pond was terrible had 3" waves.
wasnt the best testing conditions as i couldnt get past 2/3 throttle, but was a successful event ran a m440/3 prop
after 1.5 min run time motor/esc were only just starting to get a small amount of heat maybe 30c (86f) and it was 29 out side today

thanks guys, just got back from having 2 more runs
the water was perfect, nice little bit of chop and wind. mate done some more video of both runs will try and get them later.
it wasnt very fast but thats not so much what i am after, looking for sport setup with a little bit of run time but most of all reliability.
in saying that today's runs were fantastic,it still needs some fine tuning but it runs very nice on my base setup, very stable and no bad tendencies
i will move the lower up 1 mm and see if it loosens up a little

bit of a update, was going to move the lower leg up last night but before i did i checked it and it had a bit of negative thrust angle,so i kept the same height but set it to neutral.
had 3 runs today on the second run i gps,d it was bang on 40 mph with a 637 prop and batts were the same ones from the first run.
will try a 642 next run see how it goes

Hi Scott,
Thanks for the video! I was eagerly looking forward to it. I hope you can upload the other video with the nice weather and 40MHP speed as well.
I can see the 1900KV scorpion motor pushes it nicely, wonder what the 1400KV on 6S would do?! The 1400KV is even higher wattage than the 1900KV.
I had a ton of things interfere with my plans in the past week or two. So I could not really do some real work on my tunnel. I finished the sponsons, they're as identical as possible, soon I will glue them to the hull and I'll post some pictures on my build thread.

Brad
centre of my prop was about 4mm above the sponsons, i used a setup board (easy to make) the hub of my prop was level with the sponson bottom if that helps
