Default Brushless Apache 24 Questions

I'm helping my brother convert his Pro Boat Apache 24 to Brushless and I'd appreciate some input on parts.

He's already got a Traxxas Velineon motor with an OSE water cooling jacket and the ESC out of my SuperVee. Planning to run it on 6 cells NiMH for now, then 2s lipo in the future. Is there anything I'm missing or should know?

that motor is 3500kv, where the stock supervee motor is 1800kv.  I'm not sure the supervee esc is up for the task.  I think the velineon motor is rated for something like a 70A draw.</p>

Amp draw is based on the load placed on the motor, as long as we don't go totally wild with the prop the ESC should be fine. We ran it for a few minutes with the stock prop and no water cooling on the motor and the ESC was cold to the touch (it was water cooled) and the motor was only mildly warm (I'm guessing 80 degrees). If the 40mm prop turns out to be too much for the ESC to handle we can always upgrade to a better ESC later, I just had it laying around and didn't have a use for it so I gave it to him. I heard the stock prop was around 34-35mm in diameter, I'll be out at his place tonight and I can measure his prop then. The 40mm will definitely put more load on the motor, I may go with a 38 just to get a feel for what that ESC can handle.

Looks like an intresting project. Keep us updated. If it works for you, I might go the same route with mine.

Will do. Ordering the parts from OSE soon, should be here Tuesday (Wednesday at the latest). I'll try to remember to get pics along the way and I'll post them up on here.

There are a few BL Apaches out there. I don't think any of them have posted threads here (that I've seen) but you can find the vids on utube and read the comments. May give you some more info on setups that have worked. Sounds like you might be in good shape tho.

Yeah, I've seen the vids but no comprehensive threads or pics about them. I looked all over RCU and OSE for help and couldn't really come up with much. Hopefully I can do better and help someone else convert to BL more easily.

I think this setup should work out just fine. I went with some thinner brass tubing to run without a liner (some SV people have said their boats ran better without) and the inline rudder system instead of the offset (my brother and I both prefer it this way, plus it's more like the stock boat). I ordered 38mm and 40mm props to test the SV ESC, the stock prop is somewhere around 35mm I think and when we ran it the other day it was perfectly cool after a couple minutes of a test run so the 38 shouldn't be a problem and the 40 will probably be fine. We may end up gutting the boat (remove the big plastic bit where the battery, Rx, and ESC go in the stock boat) and use some Epoxy or something to stiffen up the hull and give us more room to run bigger batteries. I'm a little worried about how well the boat will handle though, I'm sure he'll flip it a few times.

I am using some cheap china stuff in mine a 35 amp water cooled esc and a 3300 KV motor it was 100.00 or so shipped to my door.
I am waiting for it to arrive to test it out... what you should go by is the widow maker 22 from pro boat it has a 35amp esc and a 2900kv motor... I also ordered the widow makers prop as it's only 35.8mm and smaller than a CF40 prop.
Go by the widdow makers specs if you intend to run 1 battery pack or a 2s lipo like i am...If you plan on going 3s lipo you will need a much lower KV motor.
