RE: Thunder Cat 31
No running today, but I have already begun thinking of my next engine in this boat as there`s nothing more I can do to the stock one to make it faster, yeah I need to radar it now and find out just how fast it is. I have a STS 30 in my buggy and that engine is very powerful and runs at crazy high rpms. I wonder if it would make more speed in the boat than the Dynamite mill??
I should be quite easy to install a new STS, wrap some brass tubing around the head for water, and duct some cooling air in over the head also. The exhaust is ready for this engine and it is the STS big block pipe sold next to the engine. I guess I could let the stinger exit out the side of the hull or even straight up through the cowling. I read in the Miss vegas thread that this is how the fast guys install the air cooled OS 18 TZ in their boats and they have no issues with cooling at all.
Is there anyone out there who have tried a big block buggy engine in the TC 31? I really don`t want to spend the money and time on this if it will still be slower than the stock modded engine.

RE: Thunder Cat 31
Just put that engine in your TC31. Common sence says this engine vill perfor better than the stock .32. STS is dyno-tested to 1,6 hp at 25000RPM. By far more than the stock .32

Thanks for your support Borre I don`t know where you got those figures, but I have read that when they dynoed the STS 30 it was done with all the shims in, so it wasn`t even close to its optimum setting.
The STS 30 is one of the highest revving engines there is and should be great in a boat.
When I`m done with my Dynamite I think I will give it a shot and see how it goes
The race is on

I got a chanse to run today afterall and it was a little to calm water for optimum speed but I managed a best pass at 42 miles I have not tried different prop heights yet, this was with the prop at it`s lowest and running "only" 45%. A little more tweaking and another 20% nitro and a little ruffer water, then I think I should be able to break 45 miles[8D]
Next time I will try the stock noisy pipe again to find out if it is faster than my silent pipe.

Success!! The stock pipe with the header shorted about 3/4" went 45 miles several times[X(] I only had about half tank on board of the remaining 45% fuel so I didn`t get a chanse to mess with the needle before I was out of fuel. I brought a gallon of Wildcat 30/24 and gave it a try. I had some passes at 42 miles and then I tried to lean it a little more and Viola! 45 miles several times also with this fuel containing too little nitro and too much oil.
I`m pretty sure I will break 45 miles when I get a new gallon of 45 % so I`m able to find the optimum needle setting with this fuel.
If only someone stocked 60% or 65% here in Norway

Hi anyone removed the tigerdrive and replaced with backplate with no drive. Was looking at a os max 20 airplane engine and the bolt spacing is the same. You would have to enlarge the holes ever slightly to except the allen bolts and you would have to clearance for piston but i think it would work. My thinking on it. It would take some weight off the boat (ever slightly) but it may free up some hp with less rotating mass. i am thinking about building one with a lathe. any suggestions? i don't belive they offer one without any starter drive at all do they? I am starting mine with a belt anyway so this is not needed.

RE: Thunder Cat 31
Well now its got me looking at that flywheel i could probally drop off a little weight off that too. Maybe turn down the stock one or build a aluminium one to replace but i think i am probally going to get the same results thou. maybe just leave well enough alone. the other benifit would be a little more room for my belt. its quite tight beteen the bottom of the boat and the flywheel. i just got this lathe running so i am dying to play around with it. its quite big for these little projects but its getting the job done. i am still trying to come up with another 3mph for my best pass is 37mph. There is a couple things i haven't done yet that was said in the postings so i think i will get there. i am getting my mph readings on a radar gun i wander what one of these guys that got a 40mph read with gps would be getting for speed on a radar gun without the weight of the gps unit in the boat. Anyone done it both ways that knows?

I am running a octura m445 and my friend has a prather s225 the boats are running pretty close to the same i got 37mph he got 36mph. last thursday i broke a flex shaft lost the prop. i ordered a sharpened polished and balanced s225 and a m445. i question weather or not i know what i am doing polishing and sharpening them. I am pretty sure i don't. I want to see what one looks like thats done right. Then i can probally figure it out. This is my first boat. Alli flyweel just out of curiosity where you find one. I would like to take a look at one.

Oh yes, I have done all the mods in the book
9.5mm carb from ASP .90 engine. Ported and polished engine, removed exess welding inside header, octura M445 prop(sharpened, polished and ballanced) cut the header by 3/4 inch, sanded the wet part of the hull, shortened and sharpened rudder, raised the water pickup as much as I dare, removed all shims under the head of the engine, vented more air in and out of the hull, autobailers installed.
I had consistent readings of 45 miles again and again running 45%. Funny thing is that I also got 45 miles running wildcat 30/24 fuel, so maybe I wasn`t lean enough when running 45%.
I actually believe I will approach or break 50 miles when I get to run it some more now. I need a little choppy water and cooler air and possibly a little leaner setting. Last time I was running it it was very warm outside and the water was completely flat, so not the best conditions for max speed.
I also have an Octura M545 and a M645 on it`s way. Maybe one of those higher piched props will give even more speed too, time will show[8D]
I will try to get a video of it next time I run it by my speedgun. It is very bad weather here now and it will remain so for the whole week to come[&o]

RE: Thunder Cat 31
45mph i am jealous i thought i was doing good at 37mph!! i guess i got to start working on this boat instead of running it so much.
in your post you said the strut was all the way down. my 37mph was with the strut all the way up. with a m445. i havn't messed with head shims or cut rudder yet. running trinty 35% monster hp.motor seem to really like it had really nice throttle transition throughout. came up on the pipe real quick but the strut was up too. i can't seem to get it on the pipe with it down. the boats dancing on the rudder looks like it could flip at any second. i actually ran a pass down turned around came back and flipped it on its own wake. in your opinion is that because i don't know what i am doing sharpening and polishing a prop. you can say it how it is my feelings don't hurt easy. i do have 2 props coming that are done up allready maybe this will help. or is this just the way its going to be trying to hit these speeds out of this boat. what was the best performance mod you did? best mph gain? excluding prop and motor swap. did the boat seem to like a certain speed then after pushing that speed get a little out of control to drive or is it just as nice handling 40mph as it is 45mph?

add a little negitive trim that will keep the bow down and it wont blow over as easy i tend to run in rougher watter and rhe boat handles well

I really don`t know what mod did what. I did them all at once and I didn`t even start the engine before I modded it
My guess is that the bigger carb might be a good place to start, remove all headshims too. This will give you more power.
My boat is very stable at 45 miles if the water is flat, actually when I tried to raise the strut/prop it became unstable, so the prop went down again

you work on your own props anything special done to it? i seen where they were talking about back cutting, cupping and even bending sounds neat but i am not sure if i am even sharpening correctly.

I am really a noob myself when it comes tp prparing props, I have only done two and I follow a simple guide I found somewhere on the web. I`ll try to find it again and post the
link here
I didn`t find the one I was thinking of, but this one is also good: http://www.modelpowerboat.com/forum/...-balancing.htm
found it, this one is great: http://www.aquacraftmodels.com/acces...op-tuning.html
