I got lucky with the pics. Heres another.
I've got 24 flights on it now. I need to move the elevator servo back- flies nose heavy.
Gave up on the low rates all together now, fly only on high rates. It does do some low speed, nose high flying- just mushing along.
It would be more fun with more power, maybe someday.

very nice, if you think you have nose problems with the .15 mag try a .28 and yes it really moves , and I think you would benefit from low rates with a bigger engine.

Here's my latest Shrike. I'm calling it Shrike Reflection. It's got a mirror image of every part in color. Red and White for the best visibility. I put twin RX batteries in the rear for helping the CG nose heavy problem.

Well having built and abused two Shrike 40's with TT46 Pro's and 8*8 props..i decided to go for a 1/2a with AP Yellow Jacket 15 in the nose.

Have had to modify fuse to fit the engine and to accept the battery right at the rear of the fuse which required a small face lift.

Will post pics soon....will test AP 15 on a 6*6 and see how she goes....c of g is spot on and have fitted a 2 ounce tank.

Will finish in the Red Arrows style.....

Will post more soon.

GL with this shrike. I never really got my .15 yellow jacket broken in to show any type of speed performance, so don't be surprised if it seems a bit slow after flying the .40 size shrike.

Has anyone done a build thread on these Shrikes? I just got the 1/2A kit which I plan to fly with a AP .061 glow engine. A build thread with pics would make everything much clearer in the instructions. I've looked in rcuniverse and rcgroups and can't fine a build thread. Is there one hiding somewhere that anyone can direct me to, particularly a 1/2A build thread?

Thanks.

The is a 40 size shrike I built, as part of the building process I widened the fuse 3/8" so that I could install a YS-60 rear exhaust motor running on a tuned pipe. The engine was tuning a 12x12 prop at 12000 RPM.
The elevator servo was on it's side in the aft compartment and used a pull/pull system. the throttle servo was the only servo in the electronics bay.

No landing gear was used to save weight. The plane was pretty quick, estimated in the 160 MPH range in level flight.

I use an OS32F in my Shrike 10, running a Graunper 8x6 prop (little stronger than APC), take offs are easy, 3/4 throttle and gentle push. Anyways flies great, has had more ground induced beatings than i care to remember but always got it back together. 5.5mm carbon rod re-enforcing behind an upgraded spar, fully sheeted wing, glassed front end.

Hello my name is ryan and I have baught a Shrike 10 today. I have two engines that I can use in this plane 1. is a new 25FX and 2. is a 25vf with a pipe, now the real question is what size props would work with the two different engines? The plane was built a couple years ago and then the person I baught it from never flew it, so this plane is very clean so any thoughts on the props would be welcome thanks

The plane flies great with a .15 engine so power and prop size shouldn't worry you using a .25 size engine. Your prop sizes for the .25fx are sport: 9x5~6,9.5x5,10x5 for aerobatic 9x6,9.5x5.

I found 9" props caused a lot of torque rolls on takeoff and any time you jammed the throttle open on mine. My OS32F is being run on a graupner 8x6, lets it really wind up in the downlines

Firstly thanks to all the members who have posted on here. I have recently finished my Shrike and found the info and pics most helpful. After putting together 16 foamies and electric conversions of balsa models others have built I felt it was time I bit the bullet and tried a balsa and film build myself. I chose the Shrike as I liked the look of it and it resembled my beloved Strykers. Build went well and I learned alot along the way (mainly by doing it twice) and have had great fun with the finished product. Its powered with a RCer Warp 4, 50amp Hyperion ESC and 2500mah Lipo. This gives it quite a high wing loading but it as an absolute rocket ship. Its very unforgiving however and I might down size the set up at some stage to reduce the wing loading. Some pics below:

Very nice job ! I am glad this thread was helpful to you. I can see the modification you made IE antenna tubing, and cooling vent on the nose, and I agree with them without a doubt. Looks like you have allot of space to fly like the wind so don't hold back ....let it rip .

After following this thread and watching a fellow club member fly his, I decided I needed a Shrike 10. Attached are some photos. I posted a pic in the extreme speed forum, but I wanted to join the club as well.

Mods to the kit include moving the firewall back 1", replacing the spars with carbon fiber rods front and rear, and thinning the ribs 1/4" each (1/8" from top and bottom at the high points). The airfoil is a significantly thinner than shown on the plan. Power is a GMS .32 and tuned pipe. I have run both 8x7 APC sport and 7.4x8 APC carbon fiber Q40 props. I would estimate its speed in the 120 mph+ range. It has been leaning out in turns, no matter how rich I launch it at. I am still working on that one.

pdxpaul,

Given the airfoil job, I am a bit surprised at your figure. Or is it due to the GMS cheap engine ? I had a friend clocked his @ 140 mph with stock airfoil and a piped OS.32 . Maybe you coulld try to record it and then doppler-analyze it ?
Your tank may be too low below the carb ... In turns, side effects are worse.

Strykaas,

I am being conservative, but I don't think I am far off with the 120. I have less than ten flights. I discovered the leaning problem with the initial flights when I was running an 8x6. I tried several things since, including a richer setting on takeoff and raising the tank. The last few flights were with the 8x7 and 7.4x8, but I had set the motor rich on take off. If I could set the motor on kill with an 7.4x8, I am sure it would bump the speed up. Also, I have not yet tuned the pipe.

The leaning out is frustrating. In any turn tighter than a large gentle arc, it almost dies. I just replumbed the 3 oz. Tettra tank, and fuel and pressure lines, but have not flown it yet. I will see if that helps. The GMS is a strong runner, especially for the price. Not sure how long it will hold up to sustained 18k.

Paul

I like to have the needle of the carb at the middle height of the fuel tank. The 15 on my Shrike has the needle at the top of the tank height. A bigger engine would only get the needle further from tank center. If the engine were mounted on its side, it would be easy to get the needle centered with the tank. Of course the muffler might take a beating. On the other hand, I've got about 70 flights on mine without any landing issues. I do land in the grass though.
How about a pressurized tank like the speed and/or combat guys use?
Your Shrike looks awesome!!

Take care, MikeB

I just have finished a Shrike with a Tower Hobbies 75 for power. It ballanced without any lead added. I did put the battery in the wedge at the very read of fuse (made a hatch there). Also I moved the firewall back one inch. I don't know the weight but it feels heavy. I may look at it for a while to enjoy as I am not sure what will have on the maden with this much motor. If you have flown on with a 60 or bigger engine please send me a PM or post some suggestions. I am worried about the torque on takeoff.

My Shrike in action.......New Pic.

This picture was captured by my friend using a high resolution digicam w/a long optical zoom lens. I had just leveled off after coming out of a shallow dive. The airplane is traveling at it's maximum speed. The guy in the foreground is not me.
