Has anyone used this type stuff to tint canopies?

I would probably try it. It is possible the solvents will affect the plastic so be prepared to buy a replacement if that happens.
Some plastics can be tinted with the RIT dye that is used for clothes. It requires hot water which also can damage plastics.

There are a ton of threads and recommendations for successfully using RIT to get the right level of tint. Use "search' button but STOP - look at the top of the screen -> old search. Use that instead. The standard search, well, sucks. Use the "and" operand between the values that you want and you will get a much better result from your search.

And like the man said, "some" plastics will accept RIT, not all.

Use Tamiya spray number TS-71 (smoke). Works great if you do it right. Mosy hobby shops carry it.

1. Wash the canopy with dishsoap and water real good. This is very important to get a good even result. You have to get off the release agent that is still on a new canopy after it is made. You can't see it, but it's there. If you do not get the release agent off you will end up with a splotchy job. This is important no matter which product or method you use.

2. When spraying avoid the temptation to put to much on at once. Go with very very very light coats and you will be a happy camper.

If you darken your canopy, don't let it set in the sun or you will have a warped canopy.

Shoot my 4* is warped and it isnt tinted! Noticed the other day it is off to the right, looks really dorked too. If the plane survives to winter I may modify the fuse and make it look more like a real plane instead of the bubble top.

i used rit on my 182 skylane windows. the tint itself came out great, but a few drops of fuel turned into white spots within 1 minute. and the spots wont come off.

Hi!
I have used Tamiya colours for decades. There are many colours to choose from. smoke ,blue ,red and orange, sprayed on the inside of canopies.
Workes great.

The CAP in my avatar has a warped canopy after setting in my car on one of those 100 degree days. I don't think is is available any more so I'll live with it.

I've used rit with success. I've also used the spray tints with success. You can also use the "candy" colors but like the spray tints need to have a VERY clean canopy to start and very, very, very light coats. Spray on the inside of you canopy for best results.

If you have scratches or spots on the outside of your canopy, sand with 1500 grit paper and give it a clear coat of paint. It will look like new again.
