I know the windex technique will not work on ultrakote, but the "Press and Seal" may keep a complicated plastic scheme together once cutout. I'm going to have to try it out.

RE: New Monokote Technique

What might work is when you go to remove the Press-n-Seal add a little extrea heat and go slow and it might be enough to get the Ultra-cote to stick before you go over it with an iron.

It would be worth a try, I do not have any ultracote or i would be willing to give it a try.

Sorry about the month old thread...

But this thread needs more pictures.

The only pictures I have seen are from lomcevek1 so thought I might do my part to contribute.

This is the plane the pictures are on...

Very glad someone found this thread again, I missed it when it was first posted. The Vid really should be a sticker so everyone could find it and it doesn't get lost again. It's not often I find something this informative on RCU and the Vid was very well done!! Thank you much for the info and all your work showing us how it's done!! Now the idea/trick is mine!!!:D I can't wait to give it A try. I use Ultra myself but I have ideas on how to get it to stick to the glass to be cut. I also have some mono and I have no rules about using it for trim! Thanks again for sharing with us.

Ultra-cote should stick to the glass just fine for cutting. It's when you let it dry that the adhesive does not stick.

If I remember though ultra-cote is a lower temp covering. So I would imagine that after you let the windex dry, when you use the heat gun to remove the press-n-seal it should stick just with the heat alone. Or make sure you get it toasty before pulling.

Try it out and let us know.

And thank you for the kind words.

RE: New Monokote Technique

Maybe just because I didn't know any better... I always used the windex trick with Ultakote and never had any problems with it at all.

One thing I did find (which maybe should be obvious, but I needed to see it for myself anyway) was that there's trim solvent and then there's trim solvent. The Topflite solvent made for Monocote is NOT good for some Ultrakote. (Remember, Ultrakote changed a couple of years ago... I haven't tried this combination on the newer stuff.) On the older Ultrakote formulation, the Monocote solvent turned the Ultrakote adhesive to goo and it stayed that way A LONG TIME (talking months or more here).

But Windex: yeh, that works.

A similar techique was covered by monokote using trim sheets and frisket paper [link=http://www.top-flite.com/reviews/trimgraphics.html]Top Flite - AnnMarie Cross - "Trim Graphics Made Easy"[/link]

Awesome video....
My Wife always comes up with these really cool designs for my planes but they are so much work using multiple layers of colors and lots of small pieces. After watching your video I pulled out a drawing and went to work. Your technique has saved many, many hours of work.... Hope you enjoy the picks

Yes,

Ann Marie Cross published how to do this with MonoKote, trim solvent and frisket 8 years ago in RC Modeler.

The Press and Seal is a very cool idea. I wonder if it would work as well as frisket for a checkerboard pattern on a complete wing panel or if it would get distorted?

Hi guys,

Great stuff. I thnk is was picard that has the wife give him designs & Anne Marie, well we've all heard of her. How do you find a woman like those? Mine left me over my hobbie-addiction! Lucky guys out there.

Mind boggles at the possibilities. Working on a GP ultimate, cant wait to get to the covering. Probably wont sleep well thinking of a design.

I thought I'd give the technique a try, and boy do I wish I tried it sooner! I did an eagle head on the bottom of one of my Somthin' Extra wings. One thing I did was use some Ultracote that I had. I printed out 2 patterns and taped my Ultracote to the glass then went over it with a warm heat gun to make it stick slightly. I used this for the yellow in the beak and grey highlight, cutting it slightly larger than needed. I then used the paper pattern (taped on one edge to my wing to align the pieces of Ultra, then ironed them down from the center out. I then used black Monokote for the outline and Windex to align it over the Ultracote. I let it set up for about 2 hours, used the heat gun to pull the wrap off, and then sealed the works with my trim iron. It came out flawless! Now I'll have to add graphics to all of my other plain Jane airplanes! Thanks for the tip! -Craig

Nice rack Cat http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gif

That was a very nice job, good to know that you can mix and match some of the plane coverings.

I have not been here in a while and glad to see this thread is still alive.

Catracer WOW that looks gorgeous. And yeah it's sad to see that on the bottom of the wing unless you have something really cool planned for the top of it ;-)
